West Virginia hiring Stewart after big Fiesta win

West Virginia interim coach Bill Stewart will be named the school's full-time head coach Thursday morning.

The school will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. ET at its Scottsdale, Ariz., hotel to announce Stewart's hiring, just hours after he led the Mountaineers to a 48-28 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma.

That win followed weeks of tumult at West Virginia following the departure of coach Rich Rodriguez to Michigan.

Stewart's deal is for five years and $800,000 per year. The contract is heavy on incentives, according to a source, who said if they're all met, Stewart "could almost make Rod money," referring to the neartly $2 million a season Rodriguez was earning before he left Morgantown.

Stewart, 55, native of West Virginia, has been an assistant coach most of his career, at colleges and in the Canadian Football League. His lone head coaching job was at Virginia Military Institute, where he went 8-25 over three seasons.

Don Nehlen, the former Mountaineers coach who hired Stewart, said Thursday he was glad his former assistant had landed the job.

"He's just such a good person and the kids love him," Nehlen said. "It's such a good fit with the program."

Stewart's players openly campaigned for him to get the job on a full-time basis after the Mountaineers' win over Oklahoma.

"He deserves it," quarterback Pat White said. "A great man. A great coach. All the players respect him and all the players love him. You couldn't ask for a better man to lead us to victory today."

"He's the glue that kept us together," added senior fullback Owen Schmitt. "West Virginia would be stupid not to hire him as head coach."

Even this morning....all of Morgantown is torching their couches in their front yard!

good for him

We will see if it was a fluke or not. I like the hire seems like the players rallied around him and wanted him to get hired.

I like the hire for the 2008 season, what happens after that really scares me.

He will keep the team together and they will be a top 10 team in 2008.

However this guy has not shown his can recruit for a lick. What type of staff can he even assemble?

I think WVU could have done better for the long term. I am confident in 2008 but worried for everything after that.

This team loves him and plays hard for him, will HS recruits feel the same way?

good for him... he is a lifer and deserves the cash and the job.

My bad, should have posted this here...

WVU Press Conference (post #1)
Bill Stewart is just an absolutely great guy. Who knows if he can recruit, but he is loveable.

Tells every single asst coach that he wants them back, and they all can stay! The whole room starts going applauding and going nuts. I mean when was the last time you saw that at a press conference.

It was just such a positive press conference, Bill Stewart even thanked the secretarys for a great job.

He even went out of his way to especially thank the media from the state of WV. He said he considered them all "friends". I was like am I in the twilight zone?

His final quote "It's my final job. I will never leave West Virginia University. If I am not getting it done, they will not have to tell me, I will tell them!"

What a fucking class guy. As I said, I have my doubts about being a legit top 10 head coach but time will tell. This Athletic Dept has done a pretty fine job when it comes to picking coaches, so they deserve the benefit of the doubt.

It was just a far cry from a NY type of press conference. I mean thanking the media. That is like unheard of.

I think they will be a top 10 team in 2008. What happens in 2009 might worry me.

Good luck to Bill Stewart!

Lets go Mountaineers!!

One of their top boosters, Ken Kendrick (who is a managing partner with the Arizona DBacks) had this to say:

"He is so overmatched its not even funny. Hes a nice guy and father figure but they had a wonderful architect and they hired the painter to build the next house. I want Bill Stewart to win and i want our program to be successful, but i feel bad for our future. Im very concerned"

Kendrick is one of the boosters who are VERY unhappy with the university and particulary the AD and new President.

However this is what he did yesterday:

West Virginia University graduate Ken Kendrick has given his alma mater a Fiesta Bowl welcoming gift: $1 million.

The West Virginia native made the donation in his new home state of Arizona on Monday, two days before WVU plays the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl.

"While I have been critical of recent events in the athletic department, I have made this gift because I love West Virginia University and West Virginia," Kendrick said in a statement released by WVU on Tuesday. "I only want what's best for my university."

Kendrick, an avid WVU sports booster, has criticized the school since Rich Rodriguez left the Mountaineers to take over as the head football coach at the University of Michigan in December.

WVU President Mike Garrison said he worked things out with Kendrick at a meeting Monday.

"I know that he cares about the university, our students and our athletic programs," Garrison said in a statement. "He has shared some very constructive suggestions with me."

Kendrick also shared $1,012,500 with the WVU Foundation for scholarships. The donation equals WVU's tab for unsold Fiesta Bowl tickets.

Kendrick graduated from WVU in 1965 and later founded Datatel Inc., which develops software for managing technology for colleges and universities. Kendrick also is managing general partner of the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team. Other business interests include investments in a Phoenix theater and a ranch and outdoor adventure company.

bad hire in my opinion. Going off emotion and not smarts, this will set the program back if not this upcoming year but in years to come. Dumb move. Should've patted him on the back...tell him he did a great job and thanks for your service. Not wise but doesn't surprise me at all that they did it being the backwards ass hicks they are down there. :)

Haha...you have a point.....but on this one I have a feeling I will be right. Its Larry Coker all over again minus the florida high school players. Without Rich Rodriguez they aren't gonna be able to pull in the out of state players and speedsters they need.

Time will tell. Like most recruting it has less to do with the head coach and more to do with the assistants and others who really go out and do the recruiting. Normally these guys end up at a school thru somebody who works for the program, not the head coach directly.

I think if he sets himself up with a good staff, he can definately succeed. Can he assemble the staff? That I am far from sold on. I can not lie, I would have rather had Butch Jones. But these players fucking LOVE him. I do not think you can discount that and WVU owes it to them.

I think any HS kid who watched that game last night had to be inspired by WVU. It did not matter that Rich Rod was not there.

Last, when was the last time the WVU AD made a bad hire in football and basketball? Dont they at least deserve a little bit of the benefit of the doubt?

Unless I'm sadly mistaken you know nothing about West Virginia or football at WVU.

Just STFU.

Maybe. But The Guy Was The Top Assistant For 7 Years. And Who Else Is Out There Now? Terry Bowden?
KingOfAllWhites
Glad to see Butch Jones got a 2 year extension and some more $$.

That is at least a good consolation prize.
