Patriots' Wilfork fined $5,000 for face-mask infraction against Chargers
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

For the fourth time this season, New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork has been sanctioned by the league, with the latest instance a $5,000 fine for a face-mask penalty in last week's AFC Championship Game victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Wilfork called the fine -- first reported by The Boston Globe and confirmed by league and team sources -- "ridiculous," and suggested he will appeal the punishment.

"I don't want to get into it [publicly] with the NFL," Wilfork said. "They'll probably fine me or suspend me [for criticism]. That's something I'll have to take care of in the offseason."

The fourth-year veteran was fined for a play that occurred with about five minutes remaining in the first quarter last Sunday. On first-and-10 from the New England 40, Chargers running back Michael Turner carried over left guard for five yards, and Wilfork grabbed his face mask as he attempted to make the tackle.

Wilfork drew a 15-yard personal foul penalty, and the Chargers gained a first down at the Patriots 20-yard line. The possession culminated in a 26-yard field goal by Nate Kaeding, giving the Chargers a 3-0 lead.

His biggest fine of the season, for $15,000, came in the regular-season finale against the New York Giants, when he poked his finger in the face of tailback Brandon Jacobs. The Giants' tailback referenced the play earlier this week when asked about his motivation for the rematch against the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.

Wilfork allowed that the play was "stupid," and said he didn't appeal the fine.

In earlier incidents this season, Wilfork was fined $5,000 for drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct foul during the Oct. 14 game at Dallas, when he tangled with Cowboys tight end Jason Witten.

He also drew a $12,500 fine for a low hit on Buffalo Bills quarterback J.P. Losman during a Sept. 23 game. On that play, in which Wilfork appeared to drive his arm into Losman's knee, Losman suffered a sprained knee ligament that sidelined him for two games.

He appealed both those sanctions, and the fine for the Losman hit was reduced by $2,500.

The Pats playing dirty? Come on. :D

OXBORO - The Patriots [team stats] are dirty. The Patriots are cheap. The Patriots are tactless, smug and unprofessional.

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Don’t know about the rest of you folks, but some of us are getting a little tired of the whining, kvetching and moaning that seems to be directed at the local football team these days. Not an opportunity seems to pass lately without someone griping about the Patriots, who just happen to be a perfect 18-0 this year and have won as many Super Bowls in the last six years as the rest of the NFL combined.

Think the other guys realize they sound like a bunch of sissies every time they open their mouths?

Good heavens.

Shut up.

“(Richard) Seymour is not a dirty player. Are you kidding me?” Patriots safety Rodney Harrison [stats] said yesterday at Gillette Stadium, where the Pats continued preparations for Super Bowl XLII against the New York Giants. “One guy says it and it gravitates through the media. The guy’s been to five Pro Bowls. You don’t like it, beat him.”

Or maybe just put on some lipstick and cry like a sniveling Paris Hilton.

So the Pats aren’t soft, pink and fuzzy. Head coach Bill Belichick wouldn’t give you the time of day if he had the face of a clock. But the way teams now line up to take their shots at the Pats is a classic case of misplaced anger, undoubtedly motivated by frustration and ineptitude.

Really, do you think that the San Diego Chargers would have said anything about Seymour had they won by two touchdowns on Sunday? Of course not. The truth is that the Chargers threw up on themselves in the playoffs against the Pats last season and they’re probably still ticked about that game, let alone the one on Sunday.

As for Giants defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora, one can only wonder why he picked now to launch similar claims at Pats offensive tackle Matt Light [stats]. Either Umenyiora is nervous, scared or astonishingly clueless, though he could be all three.

“Can you look at football and say it’s clean?” Pats linebacker Tedy Bruschi [stats] said yesterday when asked about the recent accusations of underhandedness levied at the Pats. “We’re a bunch of men with shoulder pads and helmets trying to knock each other over. I think dirty goes with the game of football.”

Competition can bring out both the best and worst in people. On the one hand, people can be pushed to reach levels previously deemed unreachable. On the other, they can sink to unforeseen depths.

Here in Boston, we should recognize that as well as anyone. Nowhere else are the championships more glorious. Nowhere else are the failures more undeserved. Over the years, with a few exceptions, we have blamed everyone from Larry Barnett to Ben Dreith to Tim Tschida. The Patriots lost Super Bowl XXXI because Bill Parcells was a distraction. The Red Sox [team stats]’ loss in the 2003 American League Championship Series was, of course, Grady Little’s fault.

Never is defeat as simple as the other team’s superiority.

We always have to blame somebody.

Or some thing.

Now here we are, eight days before the biggest of the big games, and the Patriots truly are in uncharted territory. Never before has a team entered a Super Bowl with 18 wins. The Patriots are threatening to destroy the notion that an undefeated season is impossible in this day and age, and many people would just as soon keep the riffraff out of Mercury Morris’ neighborhood.

Naturally, beyond their record on the field, the Pats aren’t perfect. The truly unfortunate aspect of Camera-gate is that some nitwits have an opening to suggest that the Patriots do not deserve anything they have achieved, when, in fact, their mistake was arrogance. Generally speaking, we could all probably benefit from a little more humility.

That said, with regard to those who keep jabbing at the Pats with taunts more fit for the schoolyard, there really is only one way that their words gain meaning.

They have to win first :hw:

I'm not a Pats hater, I respect their greatness and wanted them to go 19-0 all season.

That said, they do have dirty players on defense, but I think any intimidating defense needs a little bit of that...

Furthermore, their fanbase has gotten out of hand, they need to be brought back down off cloud 9 and now I hope the Giants beat them... but they won't.

I always wanted to see a 19-0 and 0-16 team in my lifetime, should have had both this year! ugh
