Looks like Cashman is not looking very classy right now!
NEW ROCHELLE - It has been nearly 16 months since Bernie Williams last played a game for the Yankees. But his separation from the team remains uncomfortable - and now it has become contentious.
Williams, 39, refuses to say whether he has retired, leaving the Yankees unsure of his status. He was not invited to spring training as a guest instructor and no day has been planned to honor him during the coming season.
The Yankees were miffed last year when Williams refused what they considered was a respectful invitation to come to spring training as a non-roster player. Friends said Williams was insulted.
The rift between Williams and the team got personal on Friday night. Speaking at William Paterson University in New Jersey, general manager Brian Cashman said Williams spent too much time with his burgeoning music career "and that took away from his play" on the field.
Cashman said Williams had a "terrible season" in 2005 and former manager Joe Torre was wrong to play Williams as often as he did in 2006 because better players were available.
Williams, who still lives in Armonk, was at the Greentree Country Club last night to participate in a charity dinner and auction on behalf of Hillside Food Outreach.
Told of Cashman's harsh assessment, Williams first said he didn't want to comment. But then he paused and took a deep breath.
"I don't think he has any basis to say anything like that," Williams said. "Let me put it this way: Questioning a person's commitment to the team is a very serious accusation, at least in my book."
An accomplished jazz guitarist, Williams released a record in 2003. Asked whether music distracted him baseball, Williams shook his head.
"Everybody's entitled to their opinion," he said. "I haven't really talked to (Cashman) about what he said. But I want to."
Williams did not attend any Yankee games last season, despite several invitations from Torre. He said he would be open to some sort of relationship with the team but none has been offered.
"Nothing has happened," he said. "Players that have played for the Yankees always feel they're part of a family. I still feel I'm part of that family because I played for them my whole career. But nothing has happened."
Williams spent 16 seasons with the Yankees, hitting .297. He is in the top 10 in team history in games played, hits, home runs, at-bats, doubles, RBI and runs scored. He was part of four World Series champions and a five-time All-Star.
Another former Yankee, Paul O'Neill, took part in last night's event. O'Neill is an occasional analyst on the YES Network and will be in Tampa as a spring training instructor next month.
Former Yankee Roy White also attended the dinner.
"I feel like I can have an impact in people's lives in this community," Williams said. "This is where I live, and I know the winter gets cold. It's important for people without resources to be able to get a warm meal. I'm happy to be able to do this." |

| The part about putting music before baseball may have been over the line, but the rest is true. |

| I met Bernie once, and I will say he is one of the nicest professional athletes you could come in contact with. The Yanks better step up and give him a day at the stadium. The way they pushed him out was kinda Bush league, IMO. |

| This is all bullshit... they were both in the wrong... had Bernie just accepted the invite to compete for a spot he would have gotten it... so neither side budged... I don't think he spent too much time on music though... that's lame, he was always a slow starter and was clutch all the time even in his final season. |

| Who cares about that has been? The Yanks still need another arm if they even want to pretend to compete with the Sox, Tribe, and possibly even the Tigers next year. |

Here is the latest quote from Hank(from Sunday's newsday)
"I will be patient with the young pitchers and players," Steinbrenner said. "There's no question about that because I know how these players develop. But as far as missing the playoffs - if we miss the playoffs, I don't know how patient I'll be.
"But it won't be against the players. It won't be a matter of that. It will be a matter of, maybe certain people in the organization could have done something else."
See ya Cashman :hw: |

What part of my message assumes he's made good past decisions re: SP? It's just a much more pressing concern than sour grapes from some fossil. Otherwise, the Red Sox are going to stomp em. |
