SA Police Raid Zimbabweans' Shelter
South African police raided a downtown church Wednesday night where hundreds of Zimbabweans had taken refuge, hauling people in pajamas to a police station in scenes reminiscent of apartheid-era raids.
Bishop Paul Verryn sheltered about 1,200 people at the Central Methodist Church, which has become a haven for Zimbabweans fleeing their own country's political and economic meltdown.
Authorities, who have been struggling with the migrant influx, did not immediately explain the purpose of the raid. Verryn said he had been told police were looking for illegal immigrants, drugs and weapons.
Aboriginal Leaders Welcome Apology
Aboriginal leaders welcomed Thursday a new era of indigenous relations in Australia with a government that plans to acknowledge their traditional land ownership and apologize for past injustices.
The first act of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's new government will be to ask Parliament on Feb. 13 to pass a motion apologizing for past policies of removing mostly mixed-race children from Aboriginal mothers in a bid to make them grow up like white Australians.
US Envoy Wants Int'l Pressure on Myanmar
Fresh international pressure is necessary to push Myanmar's military rulers toward reform because the momentum for change after last year's demonstrations has been lost, the top U.S. diplomat in the country said Friday.
The appeal by Shari Villarosa, charge d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Yangon, followed signs that the ruling junta was again stepping up repression of dissidents. |
