video of New York Mets pitcher Pedro Martinez and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal at a cockfight was posted this week on YouTube.
Martinez and Marichal laugh before releasing the roosters. The two took part as honorary "soltadores," the word used to describe the person who puts the animal to fight.
The animal released by Martinez appears to be killed on the video, which was posted Tuesday. The fight takes place in the Coliseo de Gallos (Rooster Coliseum) in Santo Domingo, the Dominican Republic's biggest cockfighting venue. Cockfighting is legal and popular in the Dominican Republic.
By early Thursday, the video was removed "due to terms of use violation." |

Yeah but I think it falls under the "detrimental conduct" rule in the contract agreements ...
so it could come around and burn them sooner or later ...
By comparison, it's a li'l similar to the "Amsterdam Rule," where players are still subject to drug policies and/or trafficking enforcement even if they're going to countries where the activity is legal ...
I haven't seen the video but I hear it's pretty vicious ...
Coming off the whole Vick thing,
players hafta know that it's one of those issues that's gonna bring heat from the masses and, arguably, the league ...

I saw the video before it was pulled and it was far from vicious. It was a regular cock fight. In a arena that holds cock fights every day of the year. This was not going on in somebody's backyard in the middle of the ghetto. I agree that it is not a smart thing, especially when you play in NY.
But trust me, the video is FAR from vicious.
Also, you want to bring up "detrimental conduct". How about admitting to steroids and HGH. That sounds like it is pretty detrimental to me. If Pettite is going to face no problems from MLB then Pedro will not also. This activity was perfectly legal where he did it! |
