Joel Feinberg, who launched 790 The Ticket nearly 3 ½ years ago and helped build it into a formidable challenger to WQAM, left the station on Monday, but owner Lincoln Financial said The Ticket will remain a sports station and no changes are planned.
Faced with mounting financial losses, Feinberg decided against making the payments necessary to continue his lease agreement to operate the station.
''He definitely would have liked to continue, and I would have liked [him] to continue,'' said Dennis Collins, general manager for Lincoln Financial's three Miami-Fort Lauderdale stations (WAXY-790, WLYF-101.5 and WMXJ-102.7). ''We had a business agreement and that supersedes personal feelings. They've put together a heck of a brand, an excellent [product].'' Collins said the station does not intend to cut expenses.
Feinberg's involvement in South Florida radio will be remembered largely for his brashness. He ripped the Dolphins and Joe Rose after they left for WQAM last year, and sent WQAM general manager Joe Bell mocking e-mails after the Dolphins' early season losses.
Collins said Feinberg's recent legal issue had no bearing on his departure. According to an official with the Monterrey, Calif., court system, on Jan. 25 Feinberg pleaded no contest to ''inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or co-habitant,'' stemming from an incident in which he allegedly hit his fiancé during a visit to California. Sentencing is March 6.
Feinberg did not return a phone message. The Ticket has a marketing partnership with The Miami Herald.
