Is really a stark contrast between how conservatives are divided on the issues.
We can pretty much wrap up the Obama/Hillary campaign as spend more, tax more, stop the war and promote abortions as a stem cell solution, while gay marriage is a civil right etc. Open up those borders, anyone who can get here wins the geographical lottery and is entitled to all the benefits of being here... starting with a brand new Univerals Health Care plan - available to NOT just Americans - but everyone! Truly Universal!
So we can pretty much dismiss that agenda as "The Beauty of Democracy is that the People GET what they deseve..."
As far as conservatives are concerned, we really do not care if our next president is a "black" or a "woman" because we feel it is irrelevant.
(Personally, I'd be perfectly happy with Condy Rice, who satisfys both racist and sexist agendas... for those who feel THAT is the most important thing about our next leader...)

So, let's talk about the 3-way spilt amongst conservatives..
Basically, there are:
1.) Those concerned about the security of the Nation given the asymetrical threat of Islamists, and the future challenges of China and Russia, and the proxies that they may use against US.
2.) Those who are concerned about the global market economy, and back sliding on issues like free trade, protectionism, high taxes and social spending on "entitlement" programs.
3.) Those who are concenred about the transformation of the country, from traditional family values, to a secularist melting pot of state sponsered abortions, using the raw product of such for scientific experimentation, removal of religion from a State sponsered education system and "gay marriage" - the open the sluice gate that would only lead to polygomous marriage under "equal protection" under the laws.
And, of course, the overriding issue of illegal immigration...
Namely - if you can get here, like the 12 million that are already here, WHAT does that entitle you to in this couuntry???
The later cuts across all conservative lines, with conservatives lining up under the "compassionate" vs "realistic" battlelines for the upcoming debate...
Though, truth be told - once Obama and Hillary get into it - their views of open borders and de facto citizenship for those already here... is gonna get a considered review - even amongst liberals who have gotta be asking the question - IF we can't pay for what we have now - HOW are we gonna pay for anyone else who merely has to get here???

Let's take the 1st - as that is where the most conservatives and independents have ended up - with John McCain.
Clearly, in the general election we will get a stark choice - quit! Or stay the course, as it seems to be working i.e. for Americans, we really don't fear a terrorist attack any minute, because there hasn't been one since 9/11, so we have been lulled into the idea that the threat "really doesn't exist anymore... if it ever did???"
Of course, that's what Americans felt like - before - 9/11. It can Never Happen Here... until it did.
There are even some who take solace in the many school shootings and deranged husbands or gang bangers, for whom random violence is a way of Life (unitil they are killed or put away in prison...) For many these are "terrorist attacks" or just about the same thing...
Of course, what's missing in this equation is that Islamist attacks are funded by foreign leaders like the Saudis and Mullahs of Iran with deep pockets... and carried out as an avante garde form of warfare with the specific startegic purpose to weaken our nation by terrorizing the civilian population.
If they were smart - and I think they are - they won't attack until after the next president is sworn in (whoever that may be) so the issue of National Security couuld be removed from the electorate... so far it's only a vague notion of what could happen, held mostly by people old enough to remember how we used to live under the constant threat of a nuclear war.
This is the key to McCain's success of failure - because both Hillary and Obama have NO experience in these matters and their rhetoric has only cheered our enemies - that they need only bide their time.

With Romney's withdrawal from the race - and clear rejection based on Super Tuesday's popular voting (no, Huckabee Evangelicals were NOT going to vote for a Mormon...) we can pretty much write off the economic concerns for the next president.
Forget what McCain says (now) his only claim to fiscal responsibility is that he IS a cost cutter... and that is a Good Thing for economic conservatives...
But everythign else is up in the air... somewhere between what he says and what he really feels.
Like most Liberals, McCain feels that thee American economy is one big conspiracy of "rich" people to hold down and exploit the "little" people (of which number he counts himself as one...) He has NO understanding of how free trade has made this country six times more prosperous than the last president who believed that we could Tax the Rich, Re-disttribute to th Poor... messers Carter AND Nixon!
McCain is just as likely and susceptiable to "tinkering" with the economy to help out the "people" (which nine times outta ten, ends up creating a worse problem down the road... as conservatives see it.)
Ironically, this may prove o McCain's advantage - because there are class oriented liberals out there who think that we can Nationalize Health Care and it won't degrade the existing system to the level of a Post Office of Clinics while adding a tax burden that will have to be segregated like social security and medicare - but are still strong on national defense and see the current and future threats to our nation as growing...
This could be McCain's margin of victory amongst independent thinkers.

Finally, we have the social conservative evangelicals...
That's where Huckabee is...
And ONLY there - because the Huckster is weak on national defense AND on the economy.
You wanna see where the American Christian Evangelical Movement is - check out the states and the numbers that have voted for Huckabee because his is unabashedly Christian.
Are Americans ready to vote for a candidate who wants to ban abortion, write a constitutional amendment to clarify that marriage is ONLY between hetrosexual male and female... and that we should be putting the Christian God back in our public lives.
About the margin that Huck gets in the primaries - mind you! A LOT larger and more commmited than any "Rock the Vote" gathering or Union... but still not enough to provide any candidate with a winning margin alone.
McCain courts this crowd with justifiabe trepidation...
One - he has always equated them with a cult, like Nation of Islam (and they have never forgot that - which is why he lost in Soth Carolina against Bush - not the media over reported tarring of his war record, which, in the most military state in the country was laughable at face value...)
Two - for each vote he may pick up by appeasing the Religious Right - he loses an Independent Jew, or Hindu or Muslim.
Three - while the country is re-assessing it's moral compass on the prevalence and ease of getting an abortion, it does not want to go back to any ban on the practice - if for no other reason - we don't want to pay for someone else's kids! And, while the vast majority of the country snicker at Gay Marriages like Rosie O'Donnell and her trophy wife... we don't really have a problem with "those" people getting married esp if they are gonna adopt some of those unwanted kids! And, as for Christianity - so long as they lay off Christmas - who really cares if people pary to Jesus, or Yaweh, or Buddha, or Big Al? I'll pray to all four if a plane in going down.

So? Who will win?
Once the Dems figure out which PC category they want to be president and which to be vice-president...
They REAL debates will begin and the American people will truely get what they deserve.
