I know just bits and pieces about the man. And I'm not going to watch that awful Emilio Estevez movie. Do the comparisons to Bobby Kennedy ring true for you?

Was Bobby a good Attorney General?

Bobby took a big turn for the better after JFK was assassinated.

I think Obama is more like JFK personally...its the ability speak and appeal to the soul of the nation...

You tell me.

He was running for President in his first term as Senator.

from wiki;

Kennedy stood on a ticket of racial and economic justice, non-aggression in foreign policy, decentralization of power and social improvement. A crucial element to his campaign was an engagement with the young, whom he identified as being the future of a reinvigorated American society based on partnership and equality.
Tired, but still intense in the last days before his Oregon defeat, RFK speaks from the platform of a campaign train.

Kennedy's policy objectives did not sit well with the business world, in which he was viewed as something of a fiscal liability, opposed to the tax increases necessary to fund such programs of social improvement. When verbally attacked at a speech he gave during his tour of the universities he was asked, "And who's going to pay for all this, senator?", to which Kennedy replied with typical candor, "You are." It was this intense and frank mode of dialogue with which Kennedy was to continue to engage those whom he viewed as not being traditional allies of Democrat ideals or initiatives. (I particularly think the last sentence says it all) :D

I know it's not "cool" to speak ill of the Kennedys, but by all contemporary accounts I've come across RFK was a mean son of a bitch -- more in the mould of his father than the softer, gentler version revisionist history has painted him to be.

A lot of people feared RFK. And not just the Democratic "establishment" or his political opposition. Long before attaining real power he had shown his hand as counsel to Joseph McCarthy -- a mentor he remained loyal to even after McCarthy's fall (RFK made McCarthy godfather to his first son) :jj: A lot of "progressives" cringed at the mention of RFK's name.

I don't see much similarity between Obama and RFK beyond the superficial. And off topic a bit -- all of these comparisons of Barack Obama to the Kennedy brothers is beginning to freak me out. Things didn't end well for those guys.

I know :(

"The Secret Service said Thursday that Sen. Barack Obama was being placed under their protection, the earliest ever for a presidential candidate."

And I will never understand how Joe Kennedy, Sr. and the white collar crimes he committed on Wall Street are always ignored.

It's a dark subject to contemplate -- but one that I've recently begun to give serious thought to. A bad fate befalling this guy would be very very bad for America.

A perfect, disasterous storm -- politically and culturally. Pray the secret service does their job well. :pray:

There's probably gonna be fascist assassins coming out of the fucking woodwork to prevent a black liberal from taking office.

But in case Barack does make it in as the first black President he should have a Mexican VP for insurance purposes, as the wise Dave Chappelle once said -- "you can shoot the President, sure, but you'll just be opening up the border..... right Vice President Santiago? ! Si !" :mb:
