Speaking to reporters in Richmond, VA last night, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) attacked "anyone" who points out that he is "fine" with keeping U.S. troops in Iraq for 100 or more years. "Anyone who worries about how long we’re in Iraq does not understand the military and does not understand war," said McCain.
I guess we should just forget what the Pentagon says:
Top military brass, such as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Adm. Mike Mullen and Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey, have worried in the past year that “a protracted deployment of U.S. troops”in Iraq would not be a wise move for the military:
- In October 2007, Casey said that “it’s going to take us three or four years and a substantial amount of resources to put” the Army “back in balance” and that time frame depends on when “the conflict end[s].”
- In July 2007, Mullen testified that without political and economic progress in Iraq, “no amount of troops and no amount of time will make much of a difference” and that “a protracted deployment of U.S. troops to Iraq…risks further emboldening Iranian hegemonic ambitions.”
By McCain’s logic, both the Army Chief of Staff and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff don’t “understand the military” as well as he does. |

| McCain is a feeble old douchebag....I can't wait until he loses and completes the cycle of Bob Dole. |

Too bad you didn't bother to listen to his entire statement. Then again, anyone who gets their "news" from ThinkProgress.org probably doesn't want to bother with trivial things like getting the whole story.
I urge you to watch the entire statement. He's basically saying, if we can get it to the point where US soldiers aren't being killed, it doesn't matter how long they're there. He points out that we have troops in Kuwait and nobody is screaming for their withdrawal. We have bases in Turkey. We've had troops in Germany and Japan for over 60 years. If they were being blown up every day in these places, you'd certainly hear about it. But these places are stable. It's the ENVIRONMENT around the troops that matters. |

here is some news from the Denver Post

McCain wants to pour even more of our money into the war on drugs. So more money for the war on drugs (failed), more money on the war on terror (failing and money misspent) - this guy sounds like a real great Republican that as usual is completely out of touch with reality. That said, Mitt and Huckabee are even further detached than McCain - so he does have that to hang his hat on. |

Really? Oh, I guess he meant we would step up the war on drugs for free. Yeah, that's how I would have inferred it as well  |

| The larger plan in Iraq has been the building of at least 3 huge permanent military bases and a new self-contained embassy roughly the size of the Vatican. I think McCains' statement spoke more towards a long range military presence in the region than Baghdad. It seems to me they're happy to let the focus/debate remain on Iraq while they carry out bigger plans/goals. IMO |

How many troops have we lost in South Korea or Germany after major combat ended in those respective wars? Zero.
How many troops have been killed in Iraq since May 1, 2003: 3821
That ends that analogue. |

Hey, can you link me to where McCain is stating he can step up gov't work and failed programs for free? That really seems like something he should tout if he wants to get elected. |

I'll bet he's planning to borrow the money from China, so in a way, it is free - like our free war in Iraq. |

Apparently, not only do you never have to worry about paying them back, but you don't even have to keep track of what's owed, or where it's being spent.
It's a sweet fucking deal, for sure. |
