--------------------

1. Alan Faneca, OG, New York Jets
Here’s a guy who infuses a Jets offense with legitimacy. New York sticks him in at left guard next to D’Brickashaw Ferguson, and Brick immediately gets a primer from a seven-time Pro Bowl guard. Probably won’t be long before Ferguson’s going to Hawaii, too. Meanwhile, to Faneca’s right, will be mauler center Nick Mangold. The Jets were 19th in rushing yards per game with Thomas Jones as the lead back. That should change.

2. Asaante Samuel, CB, Philadelphia Eagles
Perfect, perfect, perfect situation for Samuel. Why? Because he is not a shutdown corner who can be relied upon to simply suffocate the other team’s best receiver. He’s quick but doesn’t have great top-end speed. He is a playmaker. The attacking style of Jim Johnson’s defense and the fact Philly has a safety like Brian Dawkins playing in the secondary with Samuel combine to allow him to take risks and make plays on the ball. And that’s where he’s at his very best.

3. Michael Turner, RB, Atlanta Falcons

In four seasons with the Chargers, Turner, 26, basically got a season’s worth of work – 228 carries for 1,257 yards (5.5 YPC) and six touchdowns. Things won’t be the same in Atlanta. First off, LT won’t be tenderizing the defense for three quarters. Secondly, the Falcons offensive line isn’t quite as good as San Diego’s. Thirdly, neither are the Falcons quarterbacks, tight ends and wide receivers. So Turner will take serious punishment. But at least Atlanta can focus on more vital positions in the draft – both lines – than running back.

4. Corey Williams, DT, Cleveland Browns

He’s 27 years old, 6-foot-4, 320 pounds and rolled up 14 sacks for the Packers over the past two seasons before being dealt to the Browns on Friday. He did that damage playing defensive tackle in the Packers 4-3, now he’ll be playing defensive end in a 3-4. What’s the difference? Generally, the 3-4 is a less penetrating defense – defensive linemen hold the point of attack and allow linebackers to fill, fill, fill. If the defensive line gets upfield, creases are created and 1 or 2-yard runs become 5-yard runs. Williams is the perfect build to be an anchor similar to the Patriots' Ty Warren, a player who doesn’t have huge sack numbers but wrecks offenses and leads to three-and-outs.

5. Donte Stallworth, WR, Cleveland Browns

This is my sleeper pick as the best signing in free agency. Stallworth is as tough after-the-catch as any wideout in football because he’s stupid fast, has a low center of gravity and is jacked. With Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow (I know he’s labeled a tight end, but he’s a wide receiver) to occupy the edges of the field, Stallworth is going to make Derek Anderson even more money over the next three years.

6. Marcus Stroud, DT, Buffalo Bills

Entering his seventh season, Stroud had a down year in 2006 with a steroids suspension and a bad ankle. If his un-artificially enhanced self returns to be the force he was next to big John Henderson down in Jacksonville, the Bills could begin a rise from their status as the 31st-ranked defense in terms of yards allowed.

7. Drayton Florence, CB, Jacksonville Jaguars

You have to like this Jags secondary a lot. Rashean Mathis, second-year man Reggie Nelson and a ballhawk like Florence are going to make it very interesting for the Colts, Titans and Texans. You have to be very good in the back of your defense to compete in the AFC South and – even though Florence isn’t outstanding – at least the Jags were conscious of that.

8. Justin Smith, DE, San Francisco 49ers

This much can be said about Smith: he shows up and gives an honest day’s work every time he buckles his chinstrap. But this guy who was the fourth overall pick in 2001 (taken ahead of LT), was previously franchised by his former team (Cincinnati) and plays the glamour defensive position of end, is probably doomed to have a perception-reality disconnect by the bay. He’s a lunchpail guy and at 6-foot-4, 278 pounds he’s not big enough or fast enough to be more than that. Sadly, with a $45 million deal in hand, people are going to expect sacks and wrecked offenses not just that honest day’s work.

9. Jeff Faine, C, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

He’s been in the league five seasons and only once (2006) was able to make it through the year without missing a game. That’s what gives some pause about this very lucrative ($37.5 million over six years with $15M guaranteed) signing by the Bucs. If he stays healthy, great signing. If not – and guys don’t generally get hurt less often as they age – this could be an albatross.

10. Bernard Berrian, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Six years, $42 million with $16 million guaranteed. Those numbers will seem like an extension of Berrian’s name by the end of next season. Berrian’s a nice player and every report I’ve heard says he’s a nice kid. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see any way that he’ll ever put up numbers that will correspond to the deal he’s been given. When you have a running back like Adrian Peterson, you certainly need a deep threat to keep safeties from becoming linebackers but do you need to pay him so bizarrely high?

Best move was a stay....Lance Briggs resigning with the Bears and them getting him on the cheap:bigup:
fatroider4
If the Falcons dont take Mcfadden now because they signed Turner then that is a 10 ten worst move of the offseason
Stevie4Stern
Detroit unloading that fucking cancer Shaun Rogers...
DestroVega

jets have a good line now and a shit QB and RB
tedeso
the Alan Faneca signing by the jets is bad for the jets a five-year, $40 million contract, with $21 million in guarantees. jets offseason free agent guaranted money will surely land the jets in the worst NFL salary cap hell

a Major reason Chad stunk last year was b/c the OL was brutal, now the OL is very good. Look for Chad to have a bounce back year.

How do Thomas Jones and leon Washington stink? Both performed very well considering the blocking they had, now w/ improved OL play they'll have much better years.

Which was pretty good the 2nd half of the season inclduing slowing down the league's best offense on the road. David Harris will be starting anentire year, Revis will be have experience, we have a big body at NT and we added decent pass rusher. Our D is going to be MUCH better.

I don't agree with the order of that list and a couple of the players on it and are not deserving as they'll have a minimum impact

As far as Berrian goes the Vikes had to overpay for him. They have plenty of cap room & are desperate for a WR. He'll immediatley take pressure off of Peterson as he is a deep threat who can actually catch a ball unlike Troy Williamson. You cannot waste a talent like Adrian Peterson & the Vikes would be in danger of doing just that had they not upgraded at receiver.

Yeah, like Justin Smith. That guy will make 70 plus tackles from the DE position but the problem is that 90% of them will be 4 yards or more down field. The guy can't get to the quarterback and can't beat any offensive tackles to even disrupt plays behind the line of scrimmage. Enjoy him San Fran cause Cincinnati sure won't miss him.

Funniest thing in the whole article is calling Nick Mangold a mauler. The guy got his ass kicked all year long.

Where is the Seahawks signing Wahle on that list? That should be 7th or 8th.

Always an excuse. The weather was not good but that is not what slowed down the Pats Offense to score just 10 points(the other 10 came off TOs).

You are right! It was not the 50+m.p.h. winds or non stop driving rain, but the Jets DOMINANT Defense that only allowed the Patriots to DOUBLE the Jets score.
