Punter Sean Landeta, whose professional football career spanned a quarter century, officially retired on Thursday.
The 46-year-old Landeta played for the New York Giants from 1985-93, winning a pair of Super Bowls along the way. He has not played in an NFL regular-season game since 2005 with the Philadelphia Eagles, but the Giants signed him in 2006 as a backup for Jeff Feagles.
"The Giants organization is where I spent the most of my time as a professional," he said. "Their ownership, front office and fans were so instrumental in many of the great things that happened to me then, and even to this day."
He added: "To be part of two Super Bowl-winning teams with a franchise that has their history is very special to me. I will always appreciate everything the Giant franchise and their fans have done for me in the past, and as I stated earlier, still do to this day."
Although Landeta also played with the St Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers and Eagles during his NFL career, another team holds a significant place in his heart - the Philadelphia Stars of the defunct United States Football League.
That is where Landeta's professional career began, and perhaps not surprisingly, he was the last remaining active player in the NFL to have participated in a USFL game.
"I chose this day for a good reason," Landeta said. "First, on this day in 1983 is when it all started for me. On this date in 1997, my son Joey was born. Retirement is just another great thing to happen for me on March 6.
"This will be a great day for me to remember throughout my lifetime. As far as my future is concerned, I've had the opportunity to stay close to the game through the media, personal appearances and speaking engagements. Hopefully, this will continue."
Among NFL players with 1,000 career punts, Landeta ranks second only to Rohn Stark on the league's all-time list with a 43.3 yard average. As a punter, Landeta finishes behind only Feagles in games played (284), number of punts (1,401), punting yards (60,706) and punts inside the 20-yard lin (381). |

| A backup punter. Hmphf. I would have had him filling Gatorade cups or something constructive on the sidelines. |

| The USFL started when I was in Jr. High. I wish the league would've succeeded because they played during the Spring and Summer. |

I also went to either the first or 2nd usfl championship game at Giants Stadium. I can't remember which one. The tickets are long gone. I wonder what they're worth now. They have to be a collector's item. |

My father sold insurance to the Stars so we used to go to all the games and even went to a practice and went in the locker room after a game. I was about 7 or 8.
I still have a picture in my office with me and Kelvin Bryant. I also have a USFL football, ticket stub to the 1st playoff game and lots of programs. |

I have an unused strip of NJ Generals season tickets that I bought on Ebay for like $20. It's an interesting piece of memorabilia for a pretty cool alternate pro football league. I enjoyed the USFL back in the day and was bummed out when it was forced to fold. |

Kelvin Bryant was a stud. Lots of really good players in that league. They really put the fear in the NFL before they were forced to close up shop. |

Nah, not worth that much. Go search USFL on Ebay and you can find tons of old memorabilia for pretty cheap. I even bought some old vids of some the games that include the old 1980s commercials. Pretty funny stuff. |

| I was waiting for the page to load and was thinking to myself, its gotta be Landeta, who was the last one before him? I dug out the old football cards, they are worth something still, don't forget Flutie made his way through the USFL before hitting the NFL too. Think you named most of the big names. |

The USFL sued the NFL and the USFL won but they were awarded I think $3 and that effectively ended the USFL thanks to that dope Trump trying to go head to head against the NFL. I believe had they stayed in the spring eventually their would have been a merger and the NFL would have taken a few USFL teams into the league instead of expanding the way they did. Sort of the way the NBA took a few ABA teams into the NBA. |
