We're almost there. The Department of Justice approved the merger, and we just have to get by the FCC in order to save this medium. Let's hope so.
But if/when this is all done, what's next? I'm talking about in the next few years, where does it go? I see satellite radio as cable TV. Lots of channels, lots of offerings. But does XMSirius develop it all or do they simulcast other shows, or mix it up the way they do now?
One possibility that I have considered, is perhaps having current terrestrial radio stations broadcast their shows over satellite.
I speak from my own desires, and I'll explain.
I am born and raised in New York/New Jersey. I moved to Atlanta in September 2006. Since I got my Sirius there is only one terrestrial station that I still listen too, WFAN in New York. I'm a huge sports fan, and I love all of the commentators on that station, and it's my hometown. Yes, I can listen on the Internet, not in the car, but it's not quite the same. What if CBS/Viacom (I think they own WFAN) had a WFAN channel on satellite so that transplanted New York sports fans could always tune in?
Of course you could do this with any station in the country willing to take a chance, but I'm using WFAN as an example and a point of reference.
Wouldn't this partnership potentially save a lot of terrestrial radio stations, or at least the companies who own them? If they are getting a small piece of the pie for those subscriptions, wouldn't this potential partnership make a lot of sense, and everybody wins (which means it will never happen)?
Serious thoughts and comments welcome.
Thanks for letting me share with you. |
