Iraq takes McCain by 'surprise', again - Click HERE to go to the original thread with graphics

Republican Senator John McCain has revealed that the latest turn of events regarding the war in oil-rich Iraq has caught him off guard.

"Maliki [the Iraqi Prime Minister] decided to take on this operation without consulting the Americans," said the presidential candidate Monday on his campaign bus.

McCain added that although Maliki's decision shows independence, the White House expected Baghdad to consult with the Bush administration before altering the Iraqi forces' focus from Mosul to Basra.

"I am just surprised that he would take it on himself to down and take charge of a military offensive," the Arizona senator continued.

"I think he felt - which many of us had talked about many times-that Basra was an important part of the country," the New York Times quoted McCain as saying.

"It was not under the control of the government, we all know that varying mafia-like factions, Shiite militias, control different parts of it," claimed the 71-year-old Republican.

While McCain, an ardent supporter of the occupation of Iraq, continues to fault the Bush administration for deploying too few troops to Iraq, pundits believe he still has a hard time grasping the basic elements of what goes on in the war-torn country.

In a recent trip to Jordan, Senator McCain had claimed that it is 'common knowledge' that "al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that's well known. And it's unfortunate".

While the Republican nominee-in-waiting has attempted to downplay his gaffe by claiming that he was just using 'intentional deceptive language', some political analysts say McCain needs to be schooled in current world affairs to become the 'most qualified leader' - as he insists he is.

From Informed Comment - Juan Cole

"John McCain said he was surprised that Nuri al-Maliki would abruptly launch an operation against Basra. It seems to me that there are only two possibilities here.

Either McCain really did not know and did not anticipate the trouble in Basra, in which case he does not know much about Iraq and isn't better qualified to deal with it than anyone else.

Or, he and Cheney helped put al-Maliki up to the whole thing while he was there, and now is petrified that someone will hang the fiasco around his neck."

Some have accused him of purposely mentioning al Qaeda with Iran to lay the ground work for future military action.

Personally I think his age is a factor and he is just becoming senile.
