Thomas belts grand slam as Blue Jays rough up Beckett, Red Sox

TORONTO (AP) -- The Boston Red Sox headed home at last in an unusual position -- last place.

Frank Thomas hit his 11th career grand slam, Vernon Wells added a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Red Sox 7-4 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the World Series champions.

Boston failed to get a boost from Josh Beckett's first start of the season and went 3-4 on its opening three-nation trip, a journey of nearly 16,000 miles. The Red Sox are in the AL East cellar for the first time since April 10, 2005, when they were 2-4.

"It's probably the best thing for us right now," Kevin Youkilis said. "A lot of us are tired. We're ready to go home.

"All these different countries, different currencies, I'm kind of sick of it."

The Red Sox split two games against the Athletics in Tokyo and swept two in Oakland before arriving in Canada. They open the home portion of their schedule Tuesday at Fenway Park against the struggling Detroit Tigers.

J.D. Drew said his teammates were feeling lifeless and beaten down.

"That's kind of to be expected with the toll the trip takes," Drew said. "We're finally at the end of it, so it's back on track when we get to Boston."

Catcher Jason Varitek said Boston can't rely on a return to Fenway to cure its woes.

"We need to play a little better as a whole, pitch better, play better defense," Varitek said. "The swings will come around as a unit. I think there is a level of the trip, but we still have to play better baseball."

Out since mid-March because of a strained lower back, Beckett (0-1) was activated from the disabled list to face Roy Halladay (1-1). Beckett gave up five run,s three hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings, striking out six. He reached 96 mph and threw 59 of 92 pitches for strikes.

"Obviously, it's not the result you want, but health-wise, I felt good," Beckett said.

Manager Terry Francona said Beckett looked sharp before starting to tire.

"Early in the game, he was throwing the ball knee-high with good velocity, nice and free and easy, and staying in his delivery," Francona said. "In the fifth, I thought his legs were starting to go."

With the score tied at 2 in the fifth, Aaron Hill singled with two outs and Beckett walked Alex Rios and Wells. Thomas sent reliever Manny Delcarmen's first pitch into the left-field stands for his second homer of the season and second in as many days.

"He's a dangerous hitter," Francona said. "We knew that before, and we know it now. Manny just didn't locate his fastball where he wanted to, and it ran back over the middle."

The crowd of 30,114 called Thomas out of the dugout for a curtain call after his slam, the 515th homer of his career. Thomas also had a two-run double off Delcarmen in Toronto's 6-3 victory Friday. He went 4-for-12 with eight RBIs in the series.

"He's had my number that last two times I've thrown," Delcarmen said.

Halladay gave up four runs and eight hits in eight innings, struck out six and walked one. Jeremy Accardo pitched the ninth for his third save in as many chances.

"To start off that way, where we're playing sound defensively, pitching well and to see the bats come in and take advantage of chances, it's nice to see that early on," Halladay said.

Wells brought Rios home with a two-run drive in the fourth, his fifth career homer against Beckett. He improved to 9-for-27 against Beckett but said the hard-throwing Texan was as tough as ever.

"Same as usual," Wells said. "It's not a fun at-bat. It's fun to face him because he's going to throw everything at you. Everything is going to be hard."

Drew, Jacoby Ellsbury and Varitek each had solo homers off Halladay, while David Ortiz had an RBI single in the eighth.

Toronto, outhit 10-5 in the game, managed to hold Ortiz and Manny Ramirez in check for a third straight day. The pair finished 3-for-22 with two RBIs in the series.

Boston has lost seven straight in Toronto dating to last year.

"They played better than us here, that's for sure," Francona said. "They did pretty much everything better than us, and I include myself in that group. We certainly need to do better here."

Your yankees spend more and win less. Win something this century before you talk, douche.

By the way, the yankees don't have a "true ace"...unless you consider this an ace:

Postseason Pitching - WANG

1 Win 3 Losses
7.58 ERA

i think this is more about nuge being shocked wang pitched well and beckett didn't

NOPE, I expect Wang to win 18 or more this year, I can't see Josh winning more then 15 with an ERA close to 5. He has a 9.64 ERA now, lol....

You know, this Japan bullshit has to stop. U all know I am not a Sox fan, but no team should have to endure a trip like they had.

Baseball is AMERICA's pastime. Japan has their own leagues, let those fuckers play there. Do any of you have any interest in seeing the Yomiuri Giants play the Hanshin Tigers at fenway park? I didn't think so.

I don't think Nuge is an idiot. He comes to the NHL Thread. He has a lot of good points and a lot of knowledge on hockey.

I think he plays a character on SFN. I don't like wrestling, but he plays the bad guy that likes to stir things up with New England Sports fans.

It is not something that I would do, but he enjoys it, and frankly I think all the New England fans love it too. ;)

I don't hate the Yankees Thread if that is who you mean. I am not a person that likes team threads for the most part, but I will participate in that thread.

As most of you know I am a bigger hockey fan, so I don't quite get into baseball until the season is over.

Actually, I think the trash talking in April is kind of silly. They play 162 games a year, so way too early to write off any team yet. Look at the Tigers; they are not playing well, but they will get better.

The Sox won the World Series again last year, of course the Yankee fans aren't going to go into the Sox thread (except for that dunce nuge). What are they going to say?

I am not reversing any pschology. I consider you a good Sox fan. You are honest and do call it down the middle without sounding very arrogant. I can not say that about too many Boston fans here. I don't go in the Yankees threads because it is usually Red Sox fans causing trouble there.

I just find ironic that Nuge goes into the New England threads and he gets banned. Also, John got banned in a Patriots thread. The New England fans don't like their team being dumped on, but they seem to do that in the Yankees threads and even the Jets threads.

I only made the comment about the Sox threads not having as many posts as the Yankees because KOAM claimed there was such a demand for 2 Red Sox threads. Sorry, but I don't see it.

See this just proves how ridiculous red sox fans are. You guys are so insecure that you get more joy from finishing higher than the Yanks then from simply winning the World Series. Its funny how the mind starts to work after being beaten down for so many years.

Also, as a Red Sox fan you really cant justify the use of the payroll argument and trying to use the fact that the Yankees haven't won a World Series for a MERE 8 years proves that you believe they are the best team in baseball.

I don't see the need for more than 1 thread for a team. I even think these Yankee Individual player threads are nonsense too, so it goes both ways here.

I think the Pats fans had that bashing coming last year. I was never a big Patriots hater, but coming here last season and to see how pompous their fans were they really had it coming.

Too many of their fans gave the Giants 0 respect. I am not a NY Giants fan either, but was happy for them after seeing the way the NE fans behaved here. ;)

No, the point is that Sox fans suffer from a huge inferiority complex since your team has been in the Yankees shadow for so long. Red Sox fans actually root against the Yankees, while most true Yankees are indifferent to the success of the sox unless the two teams are playing or are in a race for first. You moronic Sox fans get just as much satisfaction from the Yanks not winning as you do from Boston's success...Its sad really.

go on being indifferent to our championships, whatever gets you through the off season after another failed year, and we'll go on enjoying them

Where are you from??? I get all kinds of shit from Yankee fans if I wear a Sox hat or jersey anywhere in NY. Yankee fans are no more indifferent than any other fan of any team in baseball. They are the most hated because of their arrogance and false sense of entitlement. The shit is thrown both ways.

Hahahaha...I don't think there is anything false about finishing 1st in the division for 9 straight years before last year, winning 4 out 5 WS titles in the recent past and possessing 26 total championships

there's not...but the red sox are the team winning the championships now...we had to deal with your bullshit for 86 years....you've had to deal with it for 4, time to take your medicine like a big boy and quit your bitching......eventually the tide will turn again and the sox will be watching the yanks win another title, until then we have bragging rights

You just proved my point. You think that because all those WS were won years ago(the majority at least) that every year the trophy belongs in NY and if it doesnt happen theres hell to pay or someone cheated or the umps fucked up. The arrogance part I dont even have to go into just reread your post. NY fans talk all kinds of shit all year to me about WS wins and the "best team in baseball" then come Oct. all I get are excuses and finger pointing until they win with THIS team then they are no better than any other team who hasnt won in the last 8 yrs and maybe if they pull it out this year it will be the first time in a long tjme it might have been done clean. Because the last little run they had was roid driven.

From today's Globe...

Here's a reminder who was in first place on April 7, 2007:

AL East: Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays in a three-way tie.

AL Central: Twins

AL West: Angels

NL East: Braves, Mets in a two-way tie

NL Central: Reds

NL West: Diamondbacks

Three of those teams made the playoffs.
