Bubba and everyone on the morning show seemed to all get real nervous when a caller called into the morning show Wed, saying that Bubba's show was exactly like a Dallas, TX radio show called the Russ Martin show. It was uncomfortable to listen to. Normally on a call like this Bubba would go off, but this was different. It made it sound like they really new all about this guys show and like they were ripping him off. I hope thats not the case. This caller also called Ned out. It was hard to listen to

i checked that dudes site and they have an R.Kelly parody song but you have to be a premium member to listen to it
ShayeD
I'm checking him out on youtube right now. I feel bad even writing this post, I love Bubba but they sounded guilty when this caller brought this guy Russ Martin up. I hope its not true.
gqman123
What did the caller say to Ned? I never hear the morning show, unless it's Friday morning on sirius.
wwfguy2000
Not sure what show you were listening to, but they hardly sounded guilty.

That was great. He basically said that Russ Martin has a guy playing a fake character...like Ned.

You're 100% wrong i've listened to it twice. It was the most uncomfortable disturbing thing I've heard. You could hear it in bubba's voice. The caller did it in a manner where he's exposing bubba but doing it in a non threatening non angry way.. Everyone on the show was scrambling, not knowing what to say. All bubba could come up with was, "oh well he doesn't have as big a show as we do" and throwing Howard Stern's name around, saying that "he's not syndicated like we are. I felt sick to my stomach b/c I love the show and thats not the way bubba would usually handle a caller accusing him of something that wasn't true. This was devistating, I hope that there's no truth to this. But either way the show has been awesome and provided me with so much entertainment over the last year. I'll try to forget about this.
azzkickin68
i was always worried about someone calling in and saying ned was fake...and with their 40 second dump(or whatever they got) you think they be smart and learn to work and just dump the shit.

Isn't "Russ Martin" the former front man for the "Monsters" in the morning that used to be based out of Orlando?

Led Zeppelin was accused of ripping off a lot of lesser acts too.

I listened to the same thing. Bubba sounded annoyed, not nervous.

Face it, ShayeD, you were looking for something that wasn't there. Bubba's not ripping anybody off, but if he was, do you honestly think he'd let the guy on the air to call him out on it?

I hope that you're right, I'm going to just let it go. I've decided not to dig any further into this, like getting some audio from this Russ Martin character. I'm just going to drop it.
KurtEvans
One other thing ... you ARE aware that there are numerous radio "talents" across the country that rip off Bubba, right? Have you ever thought that Russ Martin might be ripping off HIM? I mean, you realize that it would be easy for Russ to have recordings of Bubba's show, but it would not be easy for Bubba to have recordings of Russ, right?

I'm thinking you can't be serious.

post the audio... let us decide.

Of course I am aware of that. People call into the show all the time and tell bubba about some radio show that is ripping him off. The point is, with this call they all sounded guilty like this guy was on to something. It wasn't how Bubba typically handles a call like that.
KurtEvans
I heard the call. In fact, I just listened to it again. They sounded annoyed and skeptical. Bubba did not sound at all nervous.
Chase
Post the audio. I highly doubt it's damaging, why/how would Bubba want to rip off a guy in Dallas? I'm calling shennanigans.

I think everyone rips stuff from everyone else and just changes it to fit their show.

When you steal in radio, you're stealing twice.

Hey, I'm from Dallas, and Russ Martin is the top show with numbers in the Arbitron books. He is the afternoon drive talent on KLLI. His show is like a club house for the guys and a lot of the elements are similar.
He likes the local flair, where he grew up. He is on the edge of acceptable all the time and has a cast of good guys that are a lot like the BRN. I can see the similarities, but to say rip off is a little too strong.

I agree, I'm in Dallas too and listened to his show b4 I got Sirius. Similar, kinda.......rip off, nah.

Ok Here is the audio clip, you can decide for yourself, but if he's not guilty and I hope he's not they all sure as shit sounded like it, and his come backs were lame. Very unbubba like.

I think Ned said it right, that guy is a Russ Martin MARK. I think that's all it was, they have no idea who this no name is. The would have blew this off if they were stealing, instead Spice read the bio of the guy.
TKS_Fan
everyone rips off everyone else...not much is original content anymore. Just re-hashing the same things and trying to put a new twist on it.
SantaNed
Good clip. But After l listened , I just dont see where Bubba is at all worried about this call . So the guy said this Puss Martin has a " Fake Character" also , What is Bubba Suppose to Say to that ? He going to Fess Up ? Thats Not going to Happen. Even if He did it would Ruin the show. Bubba has the "Gift of Gab" and does not need to copy anybody else's show. He is just as good as the King Howard ! Hey Maybe that is why Howard Hired Him
Mark4Bubba
ShayeD,

Are you the Mike in this call?

Your characterization of Bubba's handling of this is way off. They goofed on the guy from start to finish like they do any caller they deem retarded.

the difference between russ martin and bubba clem is russ is number 1 in dallas the #5 market and bubba is number 1 in the # 20 market
mcbutton1970
Holy fucking balls ... another radio show creating a "character" ... wow, such a revelation ... next thing we know, we'll find out that Howard Stern has really been voiced by Fred Norris all the time and that Ralph Cirella has been playing him in all the personal appearances ...

Typical Bubba debate fashion. Out shout the other person and keep claiming he can't get a word in edge wise. But he never backed down or got nervous about the accusation.

Anybody that hasn't figured it out yet. It's a template that some radio shows follow. Get a few guys and sometimes a girl in to sit around a table and bullshit for four hours. The difference with Bubba is he doesn't have a girl in there to talk him out of anything. Even his arch nemisis Bob And Tom do it.

Howard claims to have started the whole template and I guess he did. So in all fairness the guy should have called Russ Martin and asked him why he was ripping off Howard. At the end of the day nobody is ripping off anyone. They are following a template.
-m-
I live in Dallas, and in my pre-Sirius days I listened to Russ off and on. The two shows are nothing alike and Bubba is in an entirely different league. Russ doesn't put on a bad show by any means but Bubba is just pure brilliance, imo.
DEAN616
Great call shayd. I love it when people call bubba out on the ned shit and the show shit. He gets all flapped up. HAHAHAHAHA. We all know "neds" real. LOL.
KurtEvans
The thing that really amuses me is how people latch on to certain aspects of the show get flapped up. Many of the best fans are in on a number of the inside jokes and they enjoy the show even more for that reason ... meanwhile, you've got idiots like Dean616 who come along to scream the same thing countless other idiots have screamed for years.

Thanks Dean, we appreciate your brilliant, world-changing insight. You're probably the kind of dick who would try to ruin a bit before it comes to fruition, such as the time when Spice was working on getting a girl to come on the show by contacting her through her myspace page, only for the interview to be scrapped because "fans" of the show also contacted her and warned her not to go through with it.

I don't mean to ruin your upcoming week of listening to the show, but Bubba will likely talk about the Ned Hardly t-shirts at some point, along with the upcoming Bubbapalooza. They will also spend some time - perhaps on a daily basis - talking about the hats that are now on sale at Bubba Army.

Since "fans" like yourself seem bugged by all of that, perhaps you should create a preemptive complaint thread to save us the time of having to read about it later, asshole.
ShayeD
I must be the crazy one I guess. I don't see how not a single person gets what I was saying after listening to that clip. I feel better though, I wouldn't have wanted there to be any truth to that. I love the show.
Blitzstyle
I really don't think Russ Martin created "men being men" on the radio. Thats all BTLS is. Howard didn't invint it either. (not saying buuba invented it either)Bubba has been doing a show like this over 10years and to think he has to look to some guy in Texas to still get his content is a bit of a strech. I personally know some of the guys on the show and all they do is broadcast their lives over the radio.
driver
If there was a guy on the show who was a smoker and had an annoying smoker's laugh/cough people would accuse Bubba of ripping off Bob & Tom. And like someone has already said, in radio everybody borrows from everybody else and very rarely do they give credit to where it came from. One rare time was on a "Bob and Tom" best of a few years back when they played "The Sounds Of Kinison" and Fred was given a shout out as the performer of the song.

I am not from the Texas market that Russ Martin is from, but I live in a region where Bubba was syndicated in 1997. He was doing the same radio then as he is doing now. Sure it's dirtier today, but it was certainly edgy and "Men being men".

Oh, right. I noted how you're the kind of dick who'd ruin a bit, so you latched on to my use of the word "ruin" and tried to imply that your ridiculous attitude has somehow ruined the show for me.

Let me guess. If I called you a simplistic, monosyllabic tool, you'd try to work that into your response too, right? I guess it beats having an original thought.

Bubba is on a national level and Russ Martin is stuck in Dallas.

Big Fish in a small pond on his best day that Russ Martin.
justme196996
I'm from the Dallas / Fort Worth area and have listen to Russ for years. I've only heard of Bubba when he came over with Howard. Russ is a Funny motherfucker and so is Bubba in his own way. Lets say Bubba has heard of Russ's show and took a part of it and made it his own who gives a fuck. If none of the other jocks didnt lesten to Howard and take some of his stuff what would we be listening to today? That fucked up 80's jock shit.

Both Bubba & Russ are great at what they do, and for one to be compaired to the other should be a pat on the back for both guys. About the ony thing I have heard that sounds the same is that they surround themselfs with friends and the bullshit for 4 hours and we cant get enough of it. I say ROCK ON TO THE BOTH OF THEM.

I don't remember that too well, but are we sure it was a "fan" of the show that did that? It could've been a friend or manager.
KurtEvans
I don't remember the name of the girl, but Bubba was crazy about her. Spice said "she has a myspace page, I can drop her a line," and eventually Bubba promised Spice something like $200 if he could line up an interview.

Spice said it was basically all set and ready to go, and then the girl backed out of it because other people (multiple) had found her myspace page and messaged her about how the show was not to be trusted. The implication being that these people had heard about the possible interview through the show, they'd heard about the method through which Spice reached her, and they specifically killed the bit.

That's why the show is now so reluctant to mention advanced information. They don't make surprise announcements until it's beyond set in stone because certain "fans" tend to try to ruin it.
rosco158
They are similar with the "characters" you could say, and with the co-hosts. But Bubba is far better.

I like what you're saying here. Russ has a funny show and would be even better if he went to Sirius. The only thing that I can add is once I got Sirius, I've NEVER been back to terrestrial radio. Since getting a taste of commercial-free music and the freedom to say almost anything...who would go back.

Plus, EVERYONE has taken the Howard Stern recipe for radio and tried to make a career out of it. Some come close and other fail miserably.

"am im in on"?

...uh... okay. Sure. That made perfect sense. If you'd said that phrase out loud, I'd think that you just bit off a big chunk of your tongue. Not to mention the fact that, if you were trying to convince me that you aren't a dumb-ass, then I have to hope that you weren't using your A Game.

Regardless, I have to know, if you ever came across your parents or siblings watching a Christmas special, would you tell them "hey! Santa's not real, fuckers!"?

You know what, never mind, Dean. I don't think we're on the same page, and I barely think we're on the same planet. You just keep doing what you do, sir. But please, do us all a huge favor. Don't reproduce.

Im with shayd on this one, he handled the situation very un bubba like. He did that thing everyone does when they know there caught in a lie about someone, you hear their name, and then mispronounce it like you don't know who they are. He was also a dick to the guy, when the guy wasn't trying to be an ass, he was just bringing it up, and bubba kept telling him to shut up because he knew he was gettin called out.

Used to listen to Russ Martin before getting Sirius. If anything, RMS has been stealing Bubba's show ideas!
-m-
Both shows have a few similarities. Russ and Bubba are both into hot rods and both shows have a lot of silly stunts, but aside from that each of them have distinctly different flavors. Politically the two shows are diametrically opposed with Bubba leaning more to the left and Russ going way the other way. I realize that neither are politically themed shows but Russ's opinions tend to be off putting to me most of the time and Bubba's (and Brent's) seem sensible to me with the exception of the conspiracy stuff.

Russ is also a cop groupie. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the cops, but he acts as if they are all completely infallible super beings incapable of making any misjudgements whatsoever. A perfect example of this would be his comments on the Grand Prairie police department tazing a 17 year old kid to death who was freaking out on drugs at a house party few years back. This coupled with his ultra conservative, typical Dallas white trash with cash and too cool for everything demeanor makes the show a completely alienating experience (for me). To his credit, the man definitely has funny moments, but at the end of the day it's just not my brand of cereal.

Undoubtedly Bubba is rough around the edges, but to me it's endearing, hilarious, and on a completely different level than Russ Martin. Furthermore Bubba's co hosts are all unique enough in their own personalities and opinions to balance the show out even more where Russ's are just other strains of uninteresting Dallas people (UGH). I'm a Bubba fan, but that should be obvious since I'm posting on a BTLS forum and not a Russ Martin one.

Just my unsolicited opinion.

They are all nervous they all sound like they got called on some shit. and listening to it I got the uncomfortable feeling and was like holy shit bubba is full of shit, it just showed the hypocrocy of radio to me and that everyone steals from everyone and never too put to much into anybody, bc its all a fucking work, as bubba and brent would say, its a work not a shoot.

So you really think that while Bubba is on the air (for 8 hours a day) he is secretly taping the "Russ Martin Show" from a one shot broadcast somewhere in Texas so he can copy his ideas? Lemme guess, he also copied "Russpalooza, Russ199, and MartinsCreek." All of this based on your perception of their voices on one phone call. You sir, are the only asshole here.

radio is all about stealing elements and putting them into your act. people do it in EVERY market, EVERY day, its nothing new. Everyone has taken from Stern, he's taken from people, its all radio ever does. Most people never move cross country to hear these different shows.
