Let's be clear.... those that say that "Every time the minimum wage goes up, minimum wage workers lose their jobs" do not, in actuality give a flying FUCK about minimum wage workers, so please do not try to fake compassion by calling someone else for not "having compassion for that".
That being said, minimum wage is a very complicated issue that is overly simplified for the purposes of mass consumption. It's a catch-22. If you don't have a minimum wage, then the McDonald's of the world will take advantage of that fact and hire people for 3.00 an hour, and people will be happy to oblige too. This will result in an eventual disenfranchisement of the intelligent and skilled amongst the lower class and idiots will replace them in their McDonalds jobs. This will result in lower quality of service, and although it may irk McDonalds customers, it will not bug them enough to stop going there. McDonalds executives will not care because their bottom line will either improve or stay the same, all the while all businesses will slowly be degrading, but since there is not real competition in this country, no "service oriented" competitors will emerge and everything will be shitty for everyone.... except the top 10%
If you DO have a minimum wage, you risk pricing yourself out of small business jobs and making things harder for a small business to thrive. While I certainly don't think that it is fair to run small businesses out of business, I think that it is an acceptable thing to build into a business model to plan to pay people at least minimum wage.
With a 5.5% unemployment rate (that is artificially low already), the LAST thing I think you want to do is get rid of minimum wage.
The theory is that if you got rid of minimum wage, that it wouldn't matter because the market would dictate what the minimum wage that people can live on would be....
Unfortunately this doesn't hold water and the proof of it is that people CAN'T live on minimum wage already, but they work for it.
I'm all for the free market, but I believe that minimum wage is necessary to keep big business from gaining even MORE power over the people.

I was saying this for the people who do make minimum wage, you know, giving a fuck about someone else besides themselves. and I have an education, granted it was community college, but I can't afford 10k a year for even small colleges in the area. you really need to remove your head from your ass and take a look around.
