Although Haskins was one of the winningest coaches in college basketball, he will always be remembered most for the 1966 NCAA Championship Game when he started five black players against an all-white-starting five for Kentucky. Texas Western (now UTEP) defeated Kentucky 72-65.

As an almuni of UTEP I had the pleasure of talking to Coach Haskins on many occasions and I have to tell you I am truly heartbroken. I used to be on the dance team for the Miners and have many fond memories of the Bear prowling the sidelines, getting the technical foul for a bad call and chewing out his players for not playing defense.
El Paso as a city is mourning the loss of one of its beloved icons.
