I turned my radio on today, after a few seconds it made a strange beep, then my reception shit the bed. Suddenly my transmitter seemed to lose its strenght, and the show sounded like I was listening to an AM station coming from across the country. Every Sirius station and every FM station I tried all sounded like shit. I turned the radio off. Turned it back on. It sounded great for about 20 seconds, followed by that strange beep, and back to poor reception.
I got that email about hardwiring my radio--but like you, I was going to ignore it.
Did they send some signal to my radio to stop working correctly? I hate to lose that powerful transmitter. My wife could drive behind me and pick up the show from my car.
Or did something in my radio finally give out?
I like the conspiracy theory. |

Well, its not the transmitter.
I plugged in a set of earphones, and the thing was working great for about 15 minutes. Then I hit a bump, and the static resumed, even with the earphones on.
I learned that if I held the unit just right, or squeezed the top and bottom at the same time, the sound improved. After letting go, the shitty sound returned.
I guess this means that my unit is now crap. I imagine its not worth repairing, either. |

Most likely the antenna plug has come loose. This is kinda hard to explain, but when you pop the unit open (which is a bitch), you will see the antenna plug is soldered on the main board at 4 points. On my unit, one came point loose due to repeated plugging and unplugging of the antenna wire. I would check that and repair if necessary.
This was on the original Starmate Replay by the way. |

MY Starmate 1 did this about two years ago. Found out the problem is that the jack that receives the power cord was going bad. You can't repair it for i opened up the unit to see what could be done. The reason I beleive the plug fails is from the continual plugging and unplugging from brining it fromt he car into my house setup. I called Sirius ,btw this happened after the unit was a year old. They replaced the unit free with insall with a Stratus. The only thing I had to pay for was the fm direct module with installation. This radio just failed last week after 1.5 years. The fm transmitter worked for the car radio was quiet but there was no audio coming from it. I had to again replace the Sirius radio. This time putting money out of my own pocket for a Stratus 5. I wrote to complan about how the Stratus only lasted for 1.5 years. They said they wouldn't do anything for it was out of warranty. But for my inconvenience they credited my account for $10.
BTW i've also gone through about five different Stiletto 2's for various problems with either the unit or the headset. This so for has been covered by the warranty. Unfortunately that is about to expire.

| One would think they'd build "plug 'n' play" units with components sufficiently strong to survive being plugged and unplugged. |

You would have thought so wouldn't you? the starmate didn't have what i call true plug n' play like the newer models. you had to plug in the power and the antenna and if needed the audio out. It didn't snap into a base which had all of the connections. I know I wasn't the only one with this problem for I read somewhere else of my problem. Perhaps that is why they replaced it for me even though it was out of warranty. Though my last letter from them said i shouldn't have gotten it replaced do to it being out of the warranty period.
I like the service Sirius offers but feel the quality and workmanship of their radios are very poor.

| yeah, they didn't do it to your radio. just check the cables. also, check the antenna on the roof. the car wash can stretch the cable and fuck it up |

| My starmate continuously goes in and out of acquiring signal. I called Sirius and they had no answer. Its not the antenna or anything like that either. I hooked up my bf's starmate in my car and it got perfectly good reception. |

My starmate replay also started going in and out of acquiring signal all of a sudden too.
It had been rock solid since I've had it. |
