Singleton and Kay brought up a good point today during the Yankee game, why weren't the Red Sox dubbed to be the final opponent to play the Yankees in the stadium for this final series?
I would think you guys would want something like this as much as Yankee fans would, the ultimate closure of the stadium that your team was almost as much a part of as the home team itself. There is no doubt that the Red Sox were part of the history more than any other club and it would have made for a more dramatic, entertaining, and emotional final series.
Forget about swapping out the Baltimore series with the Sox, letting the O's play the Jay's, why not just change the previous Yanks/Sox series to Fenway and the final series of the season btween the Yanks/Sox to Yankee Stadium?
It was just a minor mistake by the powers that be, imo, that would have made it all the better.
Oh yea, the opening of the new stadium won't be the Sox, either. It'll be the Cleveland Indians. Go figure. |

That's a foolish assumption to expect two teams to make the playoffs and meet each other in the ALCS. |

That's defnly possible.
I don't know what execs would think that something like this (ending the old and starting the new w/ the Sox) would be too much for fans to handle, as if our heads would explode or something.
Think about it from a marketing perspective. Sure, it's money without the Sox, but Sox included, end of the season, last game, last hurrah, the national audience would be bigger no doubt, the ad dollars would cost more, the full drama of the season unfolded/ing...
From a fans perspective, maybe a Red Sox player hits the last HR, maybe they win the last game... maybe they win the first game and hit the first HR, effectively reversing the curse... maybe they split various honors as the saga continues...
That's what people on both sides want. |
|

| I can't even imagine the cost of the additional security needed for a Yanks/Sox Stadium closer. Emotions would be running high. I think bad things would happen. :( Can't imagine the drama that would ensue if the Sox won the last game ever in the Stadium. :dontknow: Not just inside, but outside as well. |

Never said they would meet the sox in the ALCS, but if they made the playoffs the Yankees would play a team better than the Orioles. |

What if it was the Orioles that had made the playoffs and won the division this season? I bet that you didn't think that the Rays were gonna be in first place on Sept 21st and clinch a playoff birth with a win on this day before the season started.
It's not about playing a "better" team, it's about playing a preferred team, and that team is the Boston Red Sox. |

MLB really screwed this up.
1.) It should be next weekend.
2.) It should be a rival.
3.) It shouldn't be a night game. Why? So the rest of the eastern time zone coast can see the end. |
|
|
| WhatRUSaying |
The only reason I could see MLB not putting this game on the last day of the season was they want to promote the playoff races that might come down to the wire.
This is a tough spot for this game to go against a Cowboys/Packers matchup.
The Yankee/Oriole game will get some ratings, but the NFL just does better in the US.
I am with most people here in that it should have been NY and Boston at Yankee Stadium on the last day of the regular season. |

| The final game for Tiger Stadium was on a 1:00 game on a Monday. Now it wasn't the last game of the season, but it really worked out well. Everyone was able to watch the ceremonies at the end. |

Not really, as the MLB doesn't give a fuck if the Yankees win their last game in the stadium.

It's baseball, anybody can win on any day. There is no setting it up just right to guarantee a win. |

| When are they going to tear down the old Stadium? Are they keeping it open for tours for a few months? I only got see one game there in 2003 when the Sox won 11-0. I would like to get one more look at this legendary sports mecca before its gone. |

I'm feeling a little better about the final game being w/ the Orioles.
Reasons being the Yankees were the Baltimore Orioles before they were the NY Highlanders before they were the NY Yankees.
Another, one of the great moments at the stadium was against the Orioles back when they played after Munson's death. The O's will be remembered as being a big part of the stadium's history in that respect. There's also the Jeffrey Maier thing. :gb:
It can be deemed that the O's are somewhat apropos for the final game, it just woulda been better if it were the Sox. |

I'll broker you a deal, lose the rest of your games including the ones in Fenway vs. the Yanks and have the playoff in the Stadium for all the beans. :D |

MLB always caters to the Sox. it's why we never got to host them in a home opener after winning 4 WS from '96-'00 but as soon as the Sox won one they hosted us on their home opening day so they could throw their rings in our faces. We also ended '05 ,'96, '92 and '86 at fenway, when is the last time Boston ended a season at Yankee Stadium? 1982. |

Losing to the team that ended up winning 8 straight is much worse than what the mets did last year, choking away first place and a playoff spot. if you do it again this year, the mets get sole position of first |
