In the wake of a stunning proposal by the National Hockey League Players' Association that included a massive 24 percent cut to existing salaries and changes to other elements of the previous collective bargaining agreement that the union claims represent $1 billion in savings, it falls to the commissioner of the National Hockey League to take the next step in forging an agreement that will save the NHL season.

That is ok and dandy, but there still needs to be a salary cap in place or you will always have the larger market teams able to spend more than everyone else and that is why baseball sucks so much.

I am a true hockey fan and enjoy watching games no matter if my Penguins win or loose, but if they never have a chance to win a Stanley cup again because larger market teams have all the high priced talent, then fuck watching that.

Yeah because god forbid a team with fan suppourt gets to spend more money. Hopefully if a salary cap goes into effect all the wings, avs's and ranger fans all quit buying the overpriced jearsys and shit. Why bother if your teams not allowed to spend the money?

The Devils have been able to win 3 cups while boasting a payroll lower than teams that didn't even make the playoffs in each of their championship years. The Rangers have succeeded in missing the playoffs for several years while boasting one of the highest payrolls in the history of the sport. I know things are out of control, but don't count your team out just becuase they don't have the big bucks. I've always been amazed that the Pens have struggled financially while playing in such a hardcore sports city.

So, if the season goes on, how many gmaes will there be? And what about all the players who are playing in Europe? Do they have exit clauses? It'll be cool if they can save this season. I wonder what kind of things they will have to do to try and get the fans back.

This town is not as hardcore sports as you all think. This town is extremely hardcore Steelers and that is about it.

My point on the salary cap is as far as a bigger fan base, the NY area can support a higher ticket price because they have a much larger area to draw from and the larger area to draw from means a larger base of people willing to shell out the bucks for those over priced tickets.

The small market teams have a solid fan base, but they don't have that large metropolitan area to draw that walk up crowd that is willing to shell out $$$

SPM, I have always been a devils fan and think they are a great model for how hockey should be run. They have a great minor league system and they start teaching the fundamentals of how they want their players to play in the NHL, at the minor league level. The devils are kick ass.

I am not sure what the Rangers problem is, but I would guess it is from the front office all the way to the man behind the bench.
