On ESPN2 right now, AC Milan at Manchester United. If you don't watch it, then you're not a soccer fan. This is the biggest game of the year.
Caiaphas
Wow, there is snowflakes coming down at the stadium. Thanks for the info. Go, AC Milan!
stonecoldcdogg
It would've been bigger if it was Manchester United against Real Madrid.
Caiaphas
Yeah, Real Madrid is the other team I really hate.

Then we're enemies. I love both MU and RM.

How about some Man U vs. Arsenal?
Gulgothir
I hate Man Utd, but I can respect the team. Gotta give Alex credit for building a huge successful team that makes bigger money than any other sports team in existence.

AC Milan on the other hand, pretty decent, and right up there. Right now, they are probably the most formidable team in UEFA aside from Monaco.

Real Madrid sucks right now. All those class players and they are flagging in their league. They need to unload the celebrity baggage, get back to their roots and start over. They aren't gonna go far.

Anyways, back to the game, halftime break almost over. Damn, that free kick by AC Milan was sweet, just grazed the bar.

Arsenal's my team, but I def dont want to see them play Man Utd. Up till we went up against them, we were top in the league, better than everyone else and had a solid team despite some experienced players on the injury list.

Then Alex Ferguson, master of mental warfare, destroyed Arsenal's pace, mentality and ripped them apart, giving the blueprint on how to hold them and beat them for other teams.

Since then its been downhill for Arsenal, there's no way they gonna catch Chelsea. Its down to Chelsea and Man Utd. Now THATS a game I would watch.

not even close to being the biggest game of the year. man u isn't even top of the premiership. chelsea vs. barca is a better game then this

great player, but the guy with maybe the worst name in European soccer.. Milan regular and
Brazilian intenational " Kaka "..(following in the tradition of players with names like "Dunga")....will watch for highlights of Chelsea Vs Barca, as Damian Duff is probably my favorite player and Ronaldhino is capable of some great stuff...

Chelsea V Barca was by far a more exciting game, would have been even better if that egotistical referee didnt send Drogba off for two nothing tackles. Milan were lucky, but i still fancy Man U to go through at the San Siro. And what about Lyon, they have been my dark horses for the title since the beginning, 3-0 they beat Werder Bremen, and looking very strong!

Speaking of Lyon, I think Michael Essien would be the ideal replacement for Roy Keane at United....and United should have shelled out for a non-British keeper before going into Europe...Roy Carroll and Tim Howard don't cut it...
HollowTree
Yeah, Essien looks a good player, i think Man U would like to keep a British heartbeat to their side after keane goes, like they have now with keane and scholes in the middle, Ferguson bought some major flops in kleberson and djemba-djemba, veron, cant see him risking something like that again. And the goalkeepers are not doing very well at all, to be fair though, there are not many good goalkeepers availabe at the moment, i thought United may have went for Van Der Sar from fulham, but they didnt, i feel he is more capable than the Keepers they have at the moment.
Kang

Can't see United having much choice in replacing Keane, as far as British mid-field destroyers go, Gerrard is the only one up to the task and I can't ever see Liverpool selling him to United...They'll sell him to Madrid or Barca before United....beside, Gerrard's price is being rumored to being in the 20 to 30 million pound range...United could probably get Essien for less than 15 million(and he's younger),,, a Ghanian that has meant more to his French club than Veron, Kleberson, Djemba-Djemba has made to their clubs....I could be wrong though....

Amazing. A soccer discussion has gone on to 3 pages without me.

I watched the game, obviously, but it isn't the biggest game of the year. This was only the first or two legs. It is certainly the best matchup of the first round, in my opinion.

I thought it was a good game. Scholes should have buried that wonderful chance early in the first half, and Fortune nearly scored off that amazing run by Ronaldo. It was disappointing to see United lose another CL game due to terrible goalkeeping. Carroll's blunder reminded my of how Man U got knocked out by Porto last season, when Howard spilled a free kick.

Don't rule Manchester United out, though. In 1999 they went to Italy and beat Juventus 3-2 in the second leg. They will need a similar performance. Van Nistelrooy should be in better shape in two weeks, and he is the most dangerous striker in Europe.

I picked the winner of this matchup to take the crown, and I still stand by that. Chelsea will falter. Barcelona and Real Madrid do not have the defensive quality. Bayern Munich is not strong enough. Juventus has struggled in recent weeks. AC Milan is the best defensive team in the world, and they have world class forwards, Shevchenko being the European Footballer of the Year.

Real Madrid's problem is that they don't have quality defense. Their lack of consistancy is why they trail Barcelona in La Liga. However, they are so explosive when it comes to goal scoring that they can win the Champions League any year.

I don't understand your comment about Monaco. They had a great run to the final last year, but they lost several key players (Morientes, Giuly, Prso).

I don't know how you could hate Sir Alex's Manchester United. They are not like the Yankees, Real Madrid, or Chelsea, teams that just go out and buy players on a whim. The core of their team is "home-grown." Players like Giggs, Scholes, the Neville brothers, and until last year, Beckham, are all players who have been with the team since they were teenagers. Add in other English and Irish talent like Keane, Ferdinand, and Rooney and you get a team that I think is irresistable.

If Lyon goes through to the final, you may be the greatest prophet since Isaiah. They have no chance in hell of progressing past the big teams. But then again, who would have thought that Porto and Monaco would meet in the final last year.

Yeah, Lyon are not my favourites, I'm strongly behind Man U for the trophy this year, but dont count lyon out, they have built a very good team, solid in the French Championship, and like you said, nobody expected porto or monaco to reach the final last year but they did. I think we are past the days when teams are winning things because of their names. example- Greece in the Euro Championships last summer, who gave them a chance? They were lucky for sure, but they still won, or little known South Korea going all the way to the World Cup Semis in 2002. Football Is a Massive buisness now, and gone are the days when the rich clubs have all the best facilities, players and managers. Sure there are still the mega rich clubs who are going to be favourites, and have better chances of winning things, but the average clubs are closing in to a decent level on the bigger ones, i believe this is why we are seeing more shocks, and i expect it to continue.

Yes, In Munich after a European match. About ten or so people died but it rocked the entire club, and it took them a good while to get back on track. The Team at the time were known as the "Busby Babes" and were supposedly going to have a great future, before the crash ruined it for them.

Hmmm, let's check that:
2001: bought Veron for $57 mios and Van Nistelrooy for $36 mios
2002: bought Ferdinand for $58 mios
2003: bought Ronaldo for $23, bought Kleberson and Djemba-Djemba for a total of $20 mios
2004: bought Rooney for $58 mios, Saha for $25 mios, bought Smith and Heintze for a total of $25 mios.
That is a total of about $300 mios for 10 players in the last 4 seasons!
So please, spare us the "they are not like the Yankees, Real, etc..." Not true!

I will give you Giggs, Scholes and one Neville. That makes 3 core players home-grown.
The Yankees, for instance, have four: Jeter, Rivera, Williams and Posada...

Good point popasq, lets not kid ourselves, Manchester United are a SuperPower in the game, and do spend hefty sums on players like Real and Chelsea. Talking of Chelsea, they are complaining about last nights game, something about the referee and the barcelona Manager Rijkaard having a little half time meeting. And after seeing what Drogba got sent off for, i am suspicious of it all too.

I heard he was a big deal in the soccer world. Some guy said if I went to England and could prove in a pub he was a relative I would drink for free the rest of the night. I doubt I will ever go to England and I don't think I could prove he was a relative so that's out. My mother met him once in the late 40's early 50's. She was just a teenager and living in California. She said he seemed like a nice guy.

Its pretty simple why I hate Man Utd. I grew up near Highbury, home of Arsenal. Forget Totteham Hotspurs, (Arsenal's traditional rival) they are but a shadow of their former glory. Man Utd have been Arsenal's biggest rival for years and continue to be.

So I hate on basis on rivalry. But I do respect the team.

As for my Monaco comment, you're right, my bad ... I didn't realize they lost their best players for the most part. Its been a while since I learned who went where. Still, I wouldn't really support AC Milan or Real Madrid to win the UEFA.

As for that dude with the Matt Bugsby comment, dude, the man is a legend. He's even respected over at Arsenal and Man City. I don't know if you seriously would get free drinks all night throughout England, but def in Manchester.

If you really want to get free drinks in England, just be related to the rugby players that won the world cup.

Liverpool should really have been 3-0 up going into the second leg, Dudek made a howler in injury time to gift Leverkusen a goal, but they should still go through, as Gerrard is back for the second leg, pound for pound, probably the best midfielder in the world.

Ferguson won't blame Carroll
Sir Alex Ferguson refused to make goalkeeper Roy Carroll the scapegoat for defeat by AC Milan and insisted Manchester United have already proved what a threat they can be in Italy.

Roy Carroll: Another blunder. (AlexLivesey/GettyImages)
United will go to the awe-inspiring San Siro stadium in a fortnight trailing 1-0 after Carroll fumbled Clarence Seedorf's shot and Hernan Crespo fired home the loose ball.

Ferguson said: 'Seedorf should have been closed down. We directed him into the middle of the park and should have closed that area down and forced him out to the side.

'After that no-one closed him down and he has got a free shot.'

Ferguson said United should take encouragement from the match against Juventus in Turin in 1999 which they won 3-2 after being 2-0 down, en route to winning the Champions League.

'It will be a difficult game for us but no more difficult than when we went to Juventus,' said Ferguson.

'I think we deserved more from the game, it was a game of real high quality and AC Milan played an open game because they felt that was their best chance.

'This gives them a great advantage but we have a terrific opportunity still because we can score away from home and we have got the pace to worry them.'

Ferguson also rued the missed opportunities of the first half when both Paul Scholes and Quinton Fortune passed up gilt-edged chances. Scholes fired wide from 12 yards while Fortune stumbled at the vital moment and placed his shot the wrong side of the post.

'We were a bit rushed,' said the United boss. 'We lacked composure to take advantage of the opportunities and it's a pity because if we had gone in front I think we would have been okay.'

Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti was in charge of Juventus that night in 1999 and he admitted the memory made him wary of United's threat in the second leg.

He said: 'I have to say I remember extremely well what happened last time but let's just say it's better not to dwell on that.

'Of course we are really pleased with this result and it's a very important victory but by the same token we are aware this is only the first half and the second half is yet to come.

'We played Manchester United well, we gave them few opportunities and we tried to prevent them from developing attacks.

'But I think Manchester United still have legitimate hope and claims to win the Champions League as do we and the other big clubs left in the competition.'
pavement79420
Barcelona should go on to the next round of 8. I hope the win it all! Chelsea look like they are on the way out and i think its going to be very interesting to see what happens in the EPL. As far as La Liga Barca is going to take it. Madrid is going to fuck up like they always do! Soccer is a international sport and i dont think it would ever be big here in the states.

I think your right luther, about barca scoring at least, cant see them firing a blank after how they were at times ripping into chelsea at the camp nou. However, i still have the sneaking suspicion that Chelsea will advance, I can see chelsea playing with eidur gudjohnson up front, simply holding the ball, winning free kicks, etc, and i think john terry can dominate barcelonas defence. It may have to be after extra-time, but i see Chelsea sneaking through by a goal.
