| Sunday Chelsea and Liverpool meet in the final of the Carling Cup. Chelsea are the obvious favorites, but I am really hoping that Liverpool pull off the upset. Chelsea have lost two games in a row, and Liverpool will have Gerrard and Morientes back. |

Arsenal only managed a 1-1 draw against Southhampton today and they now hav no realistic hope of winning the Premiership title.
Manchester United is up 1-0 at halftime against Portsmouth, thanks to another goal by Wayne Rooney.
Real Madrid and Barcelona each play later on today.
Tomorrow is the Milan derby in Italy. I think the AC Milan will continue their dominance and defeat Inter Milan again.
Juventus needs a victory on Sunday. They have had some bad results in Serie A recently, and AC Milan has caught up to them in the race for the Scudetto. |

Good one. But it is not quite the same because this will be the only soccer thread I start. Hopefully some of the people who responded in that other soccer thread will post here.
Manchester United got the victory 2-1, with Wayne Rooney scoring both goals. Man U are only six points behind Chelsea, but Chelsea has a game in hand.
In La Liga, Real Madrid had another pathetic defeat at the hands of Deportivo. Barcelona only managed a draw, but they still moved farther ahead of Real. |

I couldnt believe Liverpool scored so soon. Then Gerrard ... damn it. I actually want Liverpool to win this one. |

An own goal by Steven Gerrard, this is heartbreaking. |

I didn't get to see it, but my buddies in England kept me informed via text message. It sounds like a good match to see, if a bit heartbreakin. I'll have to see if its on fox sports later on.
As for Chelsea, 1 cup down. How many to go now? FA Cup, Champions League, Priemiership to go. |

| Hey dudes, man, the Carling Cup Final was very entertaining, Steven Gerrard scoring an own goal to get chelsea back into the match, Jose Mourinho getting sent off, and Mateja Kezman of all people scoring the winner!! A very entertaining game. Chelsea definitly deserved the win, credit to liverpool though, they played well also. May sound a little silly but they scored too early, about 40secs it took before riise scored. All in all, great match. |

Arsenal Midfielder Jermaine Pennant has been sent to prison for 3 months today ffor drink driving. He was on loan at birmingham and played on loan for my home team Leeds United last season, before we got relagated to the Coca Cola Championship. Last season he was one of our best players and its such a waist of tallent. When he was younger he was going to be the next big thing after aresenal payed £1.2 millon for him from port vale when he was just 15.
Silly silly boy.

Arsenal playing Sheff Utd right now on Fox Sports Live. They have none of their strikers as all of them are injured, unbelievably.
Here's a quote from the sun today, "ARSENAL’S season is on the brink of collapse after Thierry Henry was KO’d for tonight’s FA Cup clash at Sheffield United.
The Gunners do not have ONE recognised striker fit for the replay.
Boss Arsene Wenger admitted: “I don’t know who I will play up front now that Thierry is definitely out. I have to think about who will replace him.”
Right now they got Ljungberg which I think makes for sound judgement. Lupoli, 17 years old, playing alongside him.
Should be an interesting game for Arsenal. |

| That was a decent 0-0 draw! both teams gave it everything. Arsenal prevailed in the end after a penalty shoot-out. 4 penalties to 2, Ashley Cole slotting home the winner. |

Yeah, it was def a thriller match. Paddy earned his money as goalkeeper right up till the penalty kickouts. The way he had been doing, it looked like the entire Sheff Utd team had been confident they could win the shoot out.
I was hoping Viera would beat the shit out of Morgan, making it more fun.
Great game. As an Arsenal fan, I'm a bit disappointed we didn't kick their ass, but I was impressed with the youngsters. Particularly Fabreagas. The future of Gunners for sure. |

It went all down hill as soon as Sol Campbell couldn't play. From there on, it was gonna be impossible to keep going strong. How we held on for so long until the Man Utd match, I don't know.
Chelsea is doing really well at the moment and I like jose morinho cos he cracks me up, but I'm actually hoping for Man Utd to catch up to them. As for Arsenal's chances, forget it.
This is the season of the youngsters. Save the big guns for Champions League. |

| Yeah, I agree Gulgothir, Forget Vieira, Henry, etc, as good as they are, Sol Campbell is Arsenals most important player, their squad is fairly weak in terms of experience, especially in defence. Wenger needs to get in some decent defenders, and probably a new Goalkeeper too, AND, i think that he himself needs to improve, if Arsenal cant beat a team with their slick, fast football, they do not have a plan B to fall back on, therefore, every now and again, they get sussed out, especially in Europe where they come across teams who can play well and win, but play ugly and win too, something Arsenal cant do. |

I think one of the big problems at Arsenal is for the first time we have seen dissent in the ranks.
With Vieira nearly leeaving for Real Madrid in the summer, Edu not resigning and selling Ray Parlour, who wasn't one of their top 10 players but he really was part of the core of the club which kept the English heart beat flowing. |

Jermaine Pennant off to the slammer, Man Uniteds Roy Keane was also in court this week on assualt charges, but was cleared, and just today, a Man United Youth player has been sentanced to 10 months in prison. Eh ... there's been worse than Pennant. Just look at Rio Ferdinard, the British version of Ricky Williams (cept Rio didnt want to quit), Maradonna - drug addict, George Best etc.
I don't know whats the deal with the Man U Youth player, but if hes any good, he should recover.
Fact is, the great football clubs got there because they had the controversial players - Eric Cantona, Roy Keane, Vieira, Rooney, etc that didn't give a shit about the fans really and more about winning. Course, they had the talent too and were smart enough not to do something as dumb as Pennant did, but there's been worse.
A year ago, or so, there was a huge scandal about some players (I think Leeds United players, not sure) that got involved in a trial for alleged gang rape of some female fans in some hotel. They were all young, dumb and drunk, and so was the girl. It happens.
Like in every sport, except cricket probably cos its so damn boring, they have their scandals. |

I was not making out that Jermaine Pennant, or anyone else i mentioned were the worst offenders there have been in football, man, far from it, like you said Maradona, George Best, etc. But with all due respect, i think you have to agree Football is alot different than how it used to be when you could get away with lots of things. But rules are so tight now, and expectations so high and pressurised, not just for the team, but the entire football club. Players now earn Gross amounts of money for a game they love, all im saying is that the least they should give back is an honest and pure effort to do what thoudands of other people would love to do, and not abuse the privaleged position they are in. |
|
|

Oh yeah, for sure HollowTree. I agree completely. I was just saying. There should be more players like Ryan Giggs, Michael Owens, etc. who truly appreciate their opportunities and try to give back to their fans and their club.
And yeah, the "roasting" scandal was the one I was referring too. I like the way they used that term, it cracked me up. I never thought of it in that context until the scandal came about. |

Rio Ferdinand never failed a drug test. He was late for the test, and when he did take it the next day, he passed. It was a travesty that he was suspended for 9 months. He missed Euro 2004 because of it, and he is England's best defender. |

I think we're lucky in the fact that we have got 4 or 5 world class central defenders. Rio Ferdinand one of them, Sol Campbell, John Terry, John Woodgate (admitably when he's fit, Ledley King.
I think you could put any combination of them 5 in central defence and still England can play well. I wouldnt like to pick which ones the best.

Manchester United blew it against Crystal Palace today, only managing a draw. Now I think there is no way for them to overtake Chelsea for the title.
Liverpool also lost to Newcastle, which leaves them with very little hope of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Unfortunately, that probably means Steven Gerrard will be gone. |

This Weeks Champions League Predictions. Tuesday
Chelsea 3-2 Barcelona
So tough to call, i believe Chelsea may just sneak it, but i honestly dont know how this one will go, i have visions of Ronaldinho running riot... but time will tell.
Lyon 7-1 Werder Bremen
Lyon should go through easily in this one, Bremens only hope will be a flying start and an early goal, i see Lyon being too strong however.
Inter 3-0 Porto
Im gonna go for Inter in this one, they should be pumped for the game, and Adriano scoring at the weekend may be bad news for Porto. Inters attack to be too strong, and the holders eliminated.
A.C Milan 1-0 Man United
I just fancy Milan to do it, been a long time since they have produced in the Champions League when it really mattered, i think they will this time though. Kaka can run riot, and with Crespo in good form, i see Milan pinching a goal, and holding Milan at bay
Wednesday
Monaco 1-1 PSV
Tough one to call, i fancy PSV to nip an away goal and go through with a draw.
Arsenal 2-1 Bayern Munich
Arsenal do not convince me in the Champions league at all. Although Bayern are missing Makaay, im tipping them to get an away goal to take them through.
Juventus 2-2 Real Madrid
Im expecting a good game here. Real are due a good performance and this will be the stage to do it. I will be dumfounded if Raul is picked ahead of Owen, if this happens Juve may just manage to go through, Owen is a poacher, perfectly suited for hurting an Italian team.
Bayern Leverkusen 1-2 Liverpool
Difficult to call, but Liverpool seem to be saving all their good play for this competition, and i see them going through with a 2-1 win.
Anyone else want to hazard some guess'? Over to you! |

I dont think they will be contending for the title for another few years yet. One good thing they have on their side is that Alan Shearer might be staying next season instead of retireing like he said he would.
Keiron Dyer may be leaving at the end of the season because most of the fans HATE him for the way he was with Bobby Robson. They Hate Craig Bellamy (who doesnt) because he want on sky sports news and said his manager is lying about him feigning injury
Pattrick Kluivert is not settling in well at newcastle so he may be shipped out in the summer. Young midfielder and former Leeds United player James Milner also is not settling in well and may come back to Leeds on loan.
One plus point for Newcastle next season is that they are going to bid for Micheal Owen from Real Madrid. If he doesn't get regular football in spain i think he may come back to England in the summer |
|
|
| HollowTree |
| Yeah, i really do not expect them to be challenging either, just hoping, we would like to see as many teams as possible up there. I expect some pretty wholesale changes at Newcastle in the summer. |

Champions League this week. My pridictions are
Barca 2 - Chelsea 1.
I believe Barca has a great chance to take out chelsea. Chelsea has to look for a goal early in the match and Valdez is not an easy keeper to beat. He had a great game over the weekend against Osasuna. He pretty much saved the game for Barca. They dont have Drogba(sorry if i spelled the brothas name wrong) and I hear that Glen Johnson is also sidelined. Barca dont have Marquez wont which sucks because he is my favorite player because i am a beaner just like him. They pretty much have a full team ready.Dont get me wrong Chelsea are a great team but Barca are way due for some titles and think this is there year!!
I hope Madrid gets there ass kicked by Juve.
Liverpool should move on the the next round of 8.
Man United are going to pull an upset i think in San Siro.
Porto are OUT!!!
Aresenal has a great last year but that is all they are going to get!! Nothing hear and nothing in the EPL! London Bastards!!!
As far as everyone else i hope the best teams wins.
The perfect final for me would be Barcelona vs. Manchester United!!! |

Juventus knocks Real Madrid out of the CL for the 2nd time in the past 3 years.
Liverpool crushed Leverkussen 3-1 again for a 6-2 aggregate victory. There may be hope of Steven Gerrard staying at Liverpool after this season - if Liverpool wins the CL this season. If they get a good draw next round, against PSV or Lyon, they could advance to the quarter finals, and from there, anything could happen. |

|

| You and many other people Luther, i just cant see it happening though, they are too far ahead. I think the gap will close a little bit from now to the end, remember Chelsea have yet to play Man U at Old Trafford, and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, but those games look like the only ones in which a loss looks even remotely possible. |

| How about Diego Forlan? A failure at Manchester United the past three seasons, the Uruguayian now has 17 goals for Villareal in Spain this season, 2nd most behind only Barcelona's Eto'o. I always knew he was a good striker, I guess all he needed was a change of scenery, |
|
|
| HollowTree |
Yeah, sometimes players, particularly South Americans find it difficult to adapt in Britain, but find it easier in Europe. Its probably a combination of many things, more Spanish or Portuguese speakers, similair cultures and interests, etc. It was clear Forlan always had the potential, he just never really got a long run in the team to show what he can do. He is getting a game every week now at Villareal and is banging them in! Good for him, and if Villareal continue their form till the end of the season, they could sneak a Champions league spot.
As for the league in Spain, its all but over with Real losing at Getafe last night! |

Champions League Draw!
The first legs of the quarter finals ties will be played on April 5 and 6, with the returns a week later on April 12 and 13.
Quarter final draw:
Liverpool v Juventus
Milan v Inter
Lyon v PSV
Chelsea v Bayern Munich
The semi-finals will take place on April 26 and 27, with the second legs on May 3 and 4.
Semi-final draw:
Chelsea/Bayern v Liverpool/Juventus
Milan/Inter v Lyon/PSV
A nice draw for my Dark Horses Lyon! Dont count them out!
A safe prediction would be a Chelsea V Milan Final. |
|
|
| Luther |
I am disappointed with this draw.
Chelsea will have an easy time with Bayern as compared to Barcelona. I was hoping that they drew Juventus.
I was hoping that Liverpool got an "easy" draw against Lyon or PSV, but they got Juventus, of all teams. :(
The Milan derby should be exciting. The same thing happened in the CL two years ago, when AC and Inter met in the semifinals. AC Milan always wins these derbies.
PSV and Lyon, the two worst teams left in the competition get drawn against each other, how lucky. One of them gets a pass to the semifinals. |
|
|
| HollowTree |
Your right that AC usually pull through in the Milan derby, but Inter are way overdue a good result against them so i can see them maybe sneaking through.
I dont think Bayern will be push overs for Chelsea, but yeah, i think Chelsea will advance.
I would say Juventus was probably the hardest opponent for Liverpool to get(By the way, are you a Liverpool fan Luther?). They are rock steady at the back, and all over the pitch. I think it will be too hard for Liverpool, and Juve will progress(Bye-Bye Gerrard when this happens)
I think Lyon will go through in the other tie and on to the semis... dont rule them out :) |
|
|
| Luther |
I like Liverpool, as well as Manchester United and Arsenal. Have to believe, I know. If Liverpool beats Everton this weekend they will only be 4 points back for the last CL spot. If that happens, Gerrard probably has a 25% chance of staying. I really think he should stay. Benitez is a great manager in my opinion and Liverpool are definitely going to be improving over the next 5 years.
I hope Newcastle wins the UEFA Cup. Shearer deserves to go out with a title. It has been a long enough wait for him and Newcastle. |
|
|
| HollowTree |
Yeah, i hope Newcastle win something too. They drew Sporting Lisbon in the next round of the UEFA cup, probably the other best team left in the compitition. I think if they can get past them they will have a great chance of winning! And they are only 2 games away from winning the F.A. Cup too.
As for Gerrard, i think it was going to need to be this season that would convince him to stay, not plans for future seasons. Im pretty sure he will leave, just not very sure where he will go. If he makes himself available of course Chelsea will enquire, but im sure Man United will dive in with an offer for him too! He would probably get more money at Chelsea, but Man United have the historical appeal, and the appeal of playing in front of 70,000 every week. |

Yeah, maybe true. But I think Alex Ferguson may be a little hesitant to buy another foreign player for the middle of his midfield, He thought he had great players in Veron, Djembe-Djembe and Kleberson, neither delivered. If he goes for Gerrard he knows Exactly what he is getting! I do believe Essien would be a success though, and he seems very keen on moving to Man Utd. |

If he goes for Gerrard he knows Exactly what he is getting! I do believe Essien would be a success though, and he seems very keen on moving to Man Utd. |
Milan's ferocious midfielder Gennero Gattuso recently said that he dreams of playing for Manchester United. His game does not have as many dimensions as Keane or Gerrard, but he is the absolute best at what he does. He could definitely fill the hole left by Keane.
He can't see Gerrard ever playing for Manchester United. Liverpool to Manchester United, can you imagine the kind of death threats he would get? |

i can't imagine beckham going somewhere like chelsea and having to fight for his place in the squad |
I don't think adding David Beckham really increases Newcastle's chances of winning a trophy that much. This is Newcastle's best chance - the UEFA Cup. If they can't beat the mediocre teams left in the competition then they don't really deserve a trophy. They still have an outside shot at the FA Cup, but they will have to beat Arsenal and Manchester United. |

Liverpool to Man Utd would not please many Liverpool fans for sure. But such moves have happened before and will continue to happed. Denis Law was and is a Man Utd legend, even though he played for Man City towards the end of his career and scored a goal to relegate Utd. If it did happen, there would be anger at first, but it would die down quick enough. However, i cant see him going to Man Utd.
As for Gattuso, he would be a great buy! A similar player to Makalele of Chelsea, like a sweeper playing in front of the defence. Gattuse would be far more likely to move to Man Utd. |

it cost me a $1 or 1 quid to join, I forget which, and at the beginning it wasn't that good, but now they've implemented some upgrades and I've seen Man City v ManUre and Spurs v City live and with a fairly decent 2" x 2" picture on my laptop. |

| Liverpool played well to win, and were by far the better side. However they had to replace 3 players in the first half through injury, and Luis Garcia had to play on in the second half with an injury too. So Liverpool may be a little short on first team players in the next couple of matches, something they really didnt need. Bolton Wanderers are making a late push for fourth place too, Liverpool play them next. |

I hope Liverpool bring in Valencia midfielder Pablo Aimar for next season. He has said that he would like to play for Benitez at Liverpool. Perhaps a player of that quality could give Gerrard reason to stay. |

Yeah, Aimar was unhappy earlier in the season as Ranieiri was not playing him. He has been playing well the last couple of weeks though, and played well in Valencias last match. If he is going to be getting games every week for Valencia, it would be hard to convince him to leave. But Benetiz is very well respected, so he could well go.
Liverpool can be a very good side next season, remember Cisse will be back, and is going to a great player, he is Henry-like. Put him up front with Morientes or Baros, and that is a great strike force
They are a bit lacking in midfield, and need another couple defenders maybe, but things are looking bright. |

They should have beat Chelsea to Kezman. He is the next Ruud van Nistelrooy. |

Cisse did not show his best form at the start of the season, i agree, but given time i think he will do very well.
Kezman has had a hard time at chelsea, he has been very, very unlucky. I, like you seen lots of promise in him when chelsea signed him, so i put him in my fantasy team. He has been quite a let down, but at least he is doing ok at the minute. |

Mexico beat the United States, you mean. A lot of other countries in the hemisphere consider themselves as living in "America."
Anyway, the U.S. plays Guatemala tomorrow in Alabama. |

Yes it is true we are coming to America and so am I. We play USA at the Soldier Field Stadium in chicago on saturday the 28th of September and then we're playing Colombia at the Giants Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday 31 May.
If anyone is going to any of the games let me know as me and three friends are coming with about 3000 official travelling England supporters and it would be good to hook up before the game. |

Have a good time mrchappelow! Are you an avid follower and supporter of England? If so, do you have any stories? They have been in a few riots over the years. I also seem to remember you are a Leeds fan, do you follow them. I remember a few years ago some Leeds fans were killed in Turkey I believe, do you follow Leeds too? |

I have a season ticket for Leeds and go to about half the away games aswell. As far as England go ive been to every major tounemant since the world cup in France in 1998.
When Leeds were playing in the champions league in 2000/2001 I went to Barcelona, Besiktas in Turkey, Milan, Lazio, Anderlecht in Belguim and the semi finals in Valencia.
As for Rioting, If thats your thing it still goes on between different firms and is easy to find if you look for it, but i tend to stay away from that. |

Nice, I wouldnt say rioting is my thing, just wondering if you had experienced any as the English fans are known to have been in a few.
Leeds had a great year that year they got to the semis, what a fall from grace though. Good to hear you are still with them during the troubled times they are in now... a true fan are you! |

What do you think England's chances are for WC2006? I think they have the talent to win it. But they had the talent to win EURO2005 as well but they blew it. |

On a positive note for Newcastle, Shearer just announced that he is going to play next season. |

Champions League quarterfinal first-leg results:
Liverpool 2-1 Juventus
Lyon 1-1 PSV
Did anyone see that goal by Luis Garcia? Stunning. |
|

| HollowTree |
Liverpool ran riot in the first half, and totally deserved the 2-0 lead. Juventus as you would expect came back at them in the second half, and pinched a fortunate goal, a combination of poor goalkeeping, and a tricky, decietful bounce. Liverpool should be happy enough with that though, they have a real good chance of progressing!
Lyon and PSV will basically start from scratch after the 1-1 draw, i expect to see a few goals in the second leg, winner, probably Lyon, progressing.
Tonight, Inter V AC Milan, will be a fairly slow, tactical game i would imagine, AC always seem to sneak the wins in these game.
Chalsea V Bayern Munich should be an interesting game, Bayern i expect will be a tougher challenge than Barcelona were, as they are very solid throughout the entire team. It will be interesting to see how Chelsea cope during the game, with Jose Mourinho not even in the stadium! |

Chelsea 4 - Bayern 2
I'm hoping for a Bayern comeback in the second leg, with the return of Roy Makaay.
AC Milan 2 - Inter - 0 |

Frank Lampard has got to be the best midfielder in the world at the moment. Both of those goals he scored today were extraordinary and with his weaker left foot.
With Lampard and Gerrard as the central midfielders, England should be a serious contender for the World Cup in 2006. |

I smell another UEFA investigation coming. There was one suspicious dude one the Chelsea bench wearing a hat over his head and holding his ear! And there were little notes being slyly distributed on the bench. Really suspicious behaviour.
Karma came back and bit Carvalho on the ass a little for Ballacks penalty, after what he did to Valdes to win the game against Barca. 4-1 was pretty much over, 4-2 is game on!!
AC Milan sneaked a couple goals againt Inter as they usually do, although Inter were the better team. AC look good for going through now, Inter and Adriano will need a storming performance to get past them in the 2nd leg. |

they had Beckhams half line shot, some Cantona trickery, think I saw a Sheringham goal....I don't think the creator of the vid is a Man U fan though....showed the Stephen Carr's goal against Man U twice, if you noticed...the LeTissier goal is my fave though |
