Will there be an actual metal station? I read that there will only be one hour a week devoted to the genre.

There already is an excellent metal station, channel 27 HARD ATTACK, metal 24/7.

By far the best metal station ever. They play a wide variety of metal. From old school stuff like Metallica, Pantera and Iron Maiden, to current stuff like Killswitch Engage, Lamb of God and Shadows Fall, to the most extreme of the extreme like Nile, The Black Dahlia Murder, Pig Destroyer, Morbid Angel.

They also get a lot of great interviews and always spin songs long before they are released. For instance Hard Attack is now spinning the new Opeth song from their upcoming album and the new Chimaira tracks which aren't available anywhere else yet. They were also playing the new Meshuggah album in its entirely a month before its release.

Anyway big thumbs up for the metal head on Sirius.

There are also a couple of other rock stations.. like one modern rock and alternative rock. Hard Attack is for those with the most extreme tastes.

What time of day/night are they playing stuff like Nile?

There is no set time. They play everything randomly. I was at work the other day listening to the metal station, and I did not hear the same song in 9 hours. There so much stuff they play.

There are a couple shows like "into the pit" type things where they only play like super extreme stuff, but I don't know the exact times.

Hard Attack is great. That Dimmu Borgir stuff is unreal that they are playing right now. I also heard some old V.O.D. this morning, and some Earth Crisis.

There are a couple of other stations that play old Maiden, Sabbath, ProPain, Fear Factory, etc. I also listen to Faction quite a bit, because they play lots of hardcore / punk stuff. They've been playing a lot of Bad Brains lately, which is always killer. I heard some Minor Threat the other day, and some Rival Schools.

Nothing beats metal in the morning on the way to the office when Howard takes one of his long commercial breaks.

give them your email address and regester for a free 3 day pass. then you can listen to all of the channels except raw dog and the sports.

BTW, I have been giving them new email addresses for like two months now to get free sirius online.

If you haven't already, I highly reccommend Dimmu Borgir's album "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia". Amazing record, and THE album to really break out Black Metal as commericially viable, and brought them from Europe's dirty little secret into America's conscious.

Features quite possibly the fastest drummer in metal - Nick Barker. His blast beats are ridiculous.

If you like Dimmu Borgir (and other Norwegian black metal), you should check out Mayhems albums.

My two favorites are:

Pure Fucking Armageddon

De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

It's the roots of norwegian black metal. They inspired Dimmu Borgir to become what they are now.

Other bands that are great: Burzum, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Immortal, Enslaved and Gorgoroth

No Emperor mention?! :)

I have some Satyricon, some Old Man's Child and a couple Emperor records, but I never got that deep into black metal. I do know that everyone speaks highly of Burzum and Mayhem as pretty much the founders. The Burzum story is interesting. However I admit, I am sort of a production whore, and poor production is pretty much a hallmark of old school black metal, and most prefer it that way. For me, it bothers me too much to get past.

You should check out the Immortal album Sons of Northern Darkness. It doesn't have the typical lo-fi sound quality, which is called Necro in the black metal community. That is the only album that I own so I don't know what their older albums sound like.
