i just got the starmate portable. it comes with the car kit and i also bought the home kit. it has a line out with the home kit you plug into your stereo. then its just a matter of plugging yer recorder, whatever it be, into the stereo and tape thru it. the starmate also has a built in fm transmitter so it can broadcast to your fm radio in the car. i had it on in the living room of my house and was able to tune it in on the radio in the bathroom so that was a big plus! im into geezer rock & jam bands so ive been listening to ch 14-17 and the sound is pretty good. good luck and enjoy. almost forgot. once you subscribe, you can also listen online with a username/pw you pick. hope howards show is live that way too. then can listen at work....with the volume reduced :-)

Thanks Santos! Good info. I'm getting mine next month.

I broke down this week and got the Sportster Replay. It's pretty sweet - it looks great, simple to use, cool pause/rewind/fast-forward feature, really strong FM transmitter,...
It was really easy to setup/install for both home & car.

My only real complaint is how I had to actually put the home antenna outside - I thought I would be able to get away with just putting it right in-front of a window. And even after I put the antenna outside and messed with the direction it's pointed I still only have 2 out of 3 bars - don't get me wrong it's great quality just wish I had the 3 out of 3.

Overall, it's a great product.

Here's a LINK with some pictures/reviews of the Sportster Replay.

I have the Sportster Replay and love it also. I replaced a Sportster with this unit. I had an odd experience with the antenna also (Note had the same issue with the original Sportster). I found a window facing the correct direction and placed it next to it. I could get a signal sometimes but later moved the antenna about 5 feet away from the window. The location is also about 3 feet higher than the original location but still inside. I do have drop outs but they are very rare…maybe once a week. The antenna location is something you really have to work with unless you are placing it outside.

IMO, I'd wait until they come out with something better. So far, the equipment is pretty crappy. Just my opinion

That's what I was thinking til Howard kept saying that he might be let go in September which made me think that I should have a unit now just in case - which is why I picked up the Sportster Replay, and I'm really liking it.

I've been a sattelite subscriber since November 2002 and I couldn't agree more. While all the people that say how great this shit is are 100 percent spot on, no one is saying any of the negative. Here is what my experiences have been:

~Not all places are created equal when it comes to signal reception.

~Units do not last as long as one would like (if you actually use them, that is).

~Some start up costs are recurred when you get another unit, or multiple units.

~I travel a lot and there are places in this country that no signal gets to, no matter wtf you have (boosters, et al).

At my current location I am lucky to get 2 bars when the weather is very nice and clear and there are no leaves on the trees. Most times I get one bar, but still get reception, but just enough to drive me nucking futs. ....on and off.....on.....then unexpectedly off, then on again as soon as you get up to check it...fucking receivers go bad and then it bounces back and forth looking for signals of repeaters....

...just sayin...

ALL THAT ASIDE: I'm getting ready to buy a new receiver (dedicated/SIRIUS Ready) and prolly even do something idiotic like get the Lifetime subscription (whose lifetime is it based on anyway ?!). Then I'll probably upgrade as soon as the better shit comes out and waste more $$$ than I should, but wtf....

PS: All the people that keep making analogies and reference to Cable TV forget that the first decade of cable was real hell, and the shit almost never survived.....until peeps like TT pumped MILLIONS INTO IT.....so I am sure this will need a few more Sugar Daddies to really make it become a real media force and player, but fuck, I lived in Vegas for a while, so....

I'm going All In.

I have a dedicated receiver in my car. I had to get a portable receiver to use it any where else. This required another sub. If I had it to do over I would have just gotten the portable unit. Also the lifetime subscription is not for the listener, it is for the unit (receiver) once you loose the receiver, it breaks or becomes outdated you loose the lifetime subscription.

Thanks. That's what I was afraid of on the lifetime subs.

How long have your receivers lasted? I haven't had one last two years, yet.

I guess this post should go into the "Hate" bin because I am going to vent here:

This transfer (HS to Sat) will suck. The technology is not up to speed. A good ole transistor radio radio would last decades if taken care of. These new Plug-n-play units bust in about 15 months, or earlier if used heavily. And then, even if you get a new one compesd as a replacement, you have to repay activation fees and then pay more subscription fees to have multiple receivers in different rooms or more than one car.

A subscription should cover an entire person/houshold; all their tuners, car et al. At the very least, one should be allowed to sign up at least 4 different devices.

Those people comparing this to cable are off the mark. This will never do to ground based radio what cable did to television. Cable was arounf for over 20 years before it began to become marketable on a larger scale and to take the shape it has today.

I think that one year from now HS will be sorry he ever went this route. He won't have as large an audience. He won't be able to pull in as many names because of it.

And on top of that, the entire format is set to change again in two more years in a way that will render all the crap we are buying now completely obsolete.

I hope I am 100 percent wrong, but I am looking toward these last 4 months of terrestrial radio as the swan song for the show. I love the show (more in the past than the current incarnation), have been listening for 20 years, but I can't seem to be able to put on the same rose-colored glasses that so many here seem to have custom fitted to their eyes. AND, what will happen a year or so from now when the FCC exercises its right to laud over satellite (it can because Satellite uses FM frequencies on its ground based transmitters). The same crackdown we see on terrestrial radion will happen on satellite -- if it becomes a big palyer. So long as it remains a back water (which it is right now financially), it may be left alone.

AUDIO CASSETTES?!?!??!?!? Are you kidding? Rip the shows to MP3.
King Of All Chris's
I have a home stereo unit. I get pretty reception at my house with the antenna inside but it will break up sometimes. I plan to run line to my computer and record the show in MP3.

I'm going to wait until Jan 1 to buy my equipment. I'm thinking sales will be crazy around that time. :hank:
