I'm waiting for the S-50 to hit the market.
(But I guarantee that they'll release a better portable after the holidays.)

| I just need one portable or for the house...what's the cheapest one out? |
|
|

| I've got the Starmate, and I think it's about the cheapest they have. It was like $49.95 and included the car kit. I picked up a home kit on ebay for $28. Works great and I didn't have to hassle with any technical crap. |

| I got the sportster. If you buy the home kit it works at home in the car and at the office. I just plug my computer speakers into it. I got old howie on the radio and h100 on the computer speakers and sfn and the screen. Multi media at its best, of course no work gets done. |

Sirius has a handful of plug and plays available one their website for $100 or so, but I'm sure you can get a better deal online somewhere.
The S-50 is on the expensive side and you have to buy a docking unit for your house as well, so the total cost is in the $450-500 range. |

I wanted that one until i figured out you need to be
docked to receive live broadcast. It's also going to be pricey $359
Right now the sportster replay is the best bang for the buck. $149 with a $50 mail-in rebate
I'm waiting until december I think........ |

That's true, but I like the idea of being able to tape the show and take it on the go. I also like the mp3 capabilities. I guess you gotta take the good with the bad for now. |

I've been thinking about getting the S50 for the portability of it, but the price is so high.
Can the other plug & play options be used to carry around or are they all too big? Do they always have to be plugged into a docking station to work? |

You can carry them around but they will not work without being plugged into a dock or boombox. The receivers do not have built in antennas or power supplies.
I went with the Sportster Replay for a few reasons.
1. Portability: All you have to do is drop it in a dock or boombox and turn it on. No wires to disconnect etc. I can pop it out of my boombox at home in the mornings, put in my car and put it in my boombox at work. It also has a fairly compact size.
2. Ease of Use: It took me roughly 15 minutes to install it in my car and another 15 minutes to install an outdoor antenna to pick up a stronger signal. The functions and features are also extremely easy to understand and use.
3. Replay: While it has a flaw (only records the channel you are currently listening to i.e. when you change the channel you lose your recorded progress from another channel.) I find myself using the feature at least 2-3 times a day to replay a song.
4. Price: For all the equipment I used it worked out phenomenal. Get the $50 rebate option with the receiver and car kit and you can buy a good used boombox on Ebay for $25.00 or so. With the exception of the outdoor antenna and after rebate I spent a total of $150.00 for 2 boomboxes, a receiver and a car kit. |

We have 4 Sirius units. I live in a market where we can't get Howard, Jacksonville, Fl...... So we are waiting..
I have 2 of the older units the Kenwood h2a and th Audiovox pnp2. Both are good units just bulky and it can get warm. We also have the Xact unit with the portable power pack and antenna. Also good for walks on the beach but it is alittle bulky.. But if you have to have awalkman type portable it's the only one they have. The other one was a factory install in my Chrysler.
If you are on abudget you can buy the 50 dollar visor units and Sirius has adiscounted product page of the older units like the pnp2 from Audiovox. I did see a starmate for 50 dollars with a50 dollar rebate.
Do yourself a favor and buy the better unit, the record feature is nice, a friend has the sportster replay. I will be retiring the old kenwood unit with the s50 when it comes out on the 11th.. |

| I picked up a Sportster Replay ($99 after rebate) and a home kit just this past Monday. I love it. The antenna that came with the home kit had enough cord to get it on the roof and the signal strength is great. I believe the $50 rebate is good on any unit $79 and above. Don't wait 'til the last minute. I don't think you would want to be trying to mount an antenna in the snow. |

| So with the home boombox, you have to install an antenna. What if you live in an apartment building? |

The antenna is indoor/outdoor. You may be able to just place it near a window. If you are in NYC, I believe they have many land based relay transmitters that should get you a signal. I started mine inside, but I get a much better signal outside. Couple screws near the roof line and I was good to go. |

I already have 2 sportsters. 1 for work truck, 1 for car and just ordered the s50.
Also just got the Executive Desktop Docking Station but cant get a damn signal. i think its about time to get a liifetime membership. |

| if you have the sportster replay and pause and are, say, 20 minutes behind can you take from boombox to car and stay in the same spot or do you lose your place and go live? |

When you power it down you lose all you have recorded, when you change the station you lose all you have recorded. That's my only real gripe with the Sportster Replay, |

Well I just received the Starmate GT for my birthday...I bought it on e-bay from a store called cellularshowroom . They have great prices and you can e-mail them with any questions about any unit they sell. Thats what I liked the most about them is because they answered my questions about Sirus and the progamming. For the people who do not have Sirus yet, there is a $15 activation unless you get 3 months or more programming then its a $10 activation fee, but they do get you on very quickly after you have installed the radio. |
