I have the starmate replay. In a matter of minutes it is heated up so much that i can't hold my finger on the screw in the back. Anyone else notice that.

Yeah the backlight generates a lot of heat.
Miller
Yes they do get warm. My Sportster replay will get really warm after setting in the boombox all day. The 3rd generation chips should create less heat than the 2.5 gen chips but probably not that much.

My Sportster replay runs very hot. Good thing the brightness fades in and out during use.

I don't have a receiver yet and am trying to pick one.
I'm planning on turning it on when I leave for work so I can record Howard to mp3. Can I turn the backlight off so it doesn't overheat??
Also, is there any kind of timer so I can set it to turn itself off while I'm gone?
Sorry, one more: is the heat a problem? That is, does it mess up the functioning of the radio or damage it?

I want to know these things cause I'll obviously be leaving it on for several hours a day.
Miller
The heat really isn’t a problem unless you plan to leave it turned on all day in the summer in the car with the windows rolled up. I forgot and did this once. The display had major fade but came back when the unit cooled off.

The heat is caused by the chipset not really the backlight. I have the Sportster Replay and it does not seem to have any noticeable heat fade during normal use. I often leave the unit running all weekend in the home dock with no problems. I also run it all day in my boombox and yes it does get warm but it’s never been a problem.

You should verify the unit you are looking at has a timer as some are different. The Sportster Replay has an Alarm which will turn the unit on at a preset time. You can also do an auto off at a specific time if you wish.

Thanks for the reply. I'm leaning towards the Sportster Replay and that's another reason in it's favor.

The Sportster Replay is a great unit and I am very happy with it but also keep in mind it uses the 2.5 generation chips. Sirius has some new radios coming out which use the 3rd generation chips which are somewhat smaller and may produce less heat. Sirius claims they can increase their bandwidth next year by 25%. They will do this by basically using a new compression method.

It’s my understanding the 3rd gen chips will be able to support this but I don’t think the 2.5 gen chips can. I have no idea what the extra bandwidth will be used for, maybe only video and data so this won’t mean much to you if you buy the Sportster now. Also note the Sportster Replay seems to be in somewhat short supply right now. It’s currently on backorder for Bestbuy.com. Circuitcity.com doesn’t say if it’s on backorder or not but almost all stores in Central PA and Philly area are showing it out of stock according to their website.

I’m not trying to talk you out of buying this unit, just trying to give you info to think about. Good luck and I don’t doubt you will enjoy Sirius…no I don’t work for them…just a huge Howard fan.

Thanks. I'll have to see if any 3rd gen chips will be out this year before Howard starts and will be affordable (the S50 is way too expensive for me). Otherwise, I'm really just getting Sirius for Howard, the rest is bonus.
Miller
I’m pretty sure the S50 and Staremate Replay are 3.0 G chips. All of this will keep changing as I think Sirius will release receivers in mid or late 2006 with 3.5 g chips. I think the Sportster Replay is a good unit for you from what you’ve said. Hell you might even get lucky and find and original Sportster (orange display and no pause) in some stores still for a very cheap price. The docks and boombox are the same for both. I’ve had both of them and would purchase my replay again over the Starmate Replay for the better docking station configuration alone.

All this crap being said both Sirius and XM will keep offering receivers at a very low cost like Directv and Dishnetwork currently do.

I got my unit this past Monday, having ordered it last Thursday. I was wondering about the heat issue myself. I have the Kenwood KTC-H2A1 (Here2Everywhere) unit. Kenwood said it shouldn't pose an issue. I have the backlight set to the medium "strength" setting. I guess I could lower it to the least powerful if it was going to help reduce the heat. Does anyone know if the two are linked; heat to the backlight?

As to the chipset issue, when they release a new chipset are we all going to have to upgrade units? MY unit was a clearance unit, but a fine one for what I need it to do, so it's already got a newer version that is (no joke) 500%+ more expensive ($49 up to $270). So if I don't need to ever upgrade, I'd just assume keep my unit. Thanks!

Also is there anywhere to see a listing of Howard 100 and 101 station programming info. I can't seem to find that anywhere yet, but maybe because he's not on it yet and just random shows are.
Miller
As I said earlier the heat is not really caused by the display, it’s generated from the chipset.

You do not have to upgrade every time Sirius comes out with a new chipset. It just means new receivers may be capable of things your receiver isn’t but it should still work.

I left my car receiver on overnight - the next morning, it was extremely hot

The reason the back light fades in and out is because the Sportster Replay is set to automatic dimming buy default. Mine was doing the same thing until I changed it to manual dimming in the menu settings.

I have an Audiovox PNP2 Receiver and after running for a bit it feels extremely hot too the touch. So much so that I wouldn't be surprised if it caught on fire. You could probably cook an egg on it. Kinda makes me scared to leave it running overnight or for long periods of time. I don't think I'll ever leave it running when I'm not around.
