Hey gang i read in the local paper here in Philly. Thtt Direct Tv is supposed to be getting some form of On Demand soon. If they will carry Howard and When they are supposed to get it i have no idea. I called Direct Tv and asked them about it they had no idea. I then asked how could they have no idea when it is written in the local paper for the last two days. She tells me to call back another time. I was curious if anyone else has any info on this Rumor

Man I would be all over that. The one thing that sucks about pay per view on Direct TV. They need to get on it.

They have a new DVR coming out to replace the Tivo units. To get their new on-demand programming, you have to get the new DVR and they will push certain programs that you pay for to the DVR for you to watch when you want. Right now I think the only content is from NBC and its cable affiliates. I'll find an article and post it.

Direct TV still doesn't have the technology to offer true on-demand, but they are getting closer. I don't think Howard will be included in their offerings anytime soon.

Here's the deal. They are charging 99 cents for NBC shows without ads. You have to have the new DVR to get this. If you have a DVR, you can just record it for free when it airs...why would you pay 99 cents to get something you can record anyway?

Tailored TV gains ground
By David Lieberman, USA TODAY
NEW YORK — CBS and NBC delivered another hammer blow to the traditional TV economic model on Monday by agreeing to let some Comcast and DirecTV customers pay 99 cents to watch certain hit shows on demand and without local ads.

A scene from 'CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,' which Comcast subscribers can see ad-free for 99 cents.
CBS

Viacom's CBS struck a deal with Comcast that will make new episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, NCIS, Survivor and The Amazing Race available to viewers who subscribe to its extra-cost digital service and live in markets served by network-owned CBS stations.

Comcast will offer the programs for 99 cents each shortly after they air on the West Coast. The reality shows, which typically don't do well in repeats, will be available all season. Dramas will be available only until the next new episode airs, but viewers with digital video recorders (DVR) can save copies. (Related: Some viewers don't want more TV.)

"This is a major breakthrough. It's a precedent," says Comcast CEO Brian Roberts. "We're moving to personalized television. That's the strategy Comcast has bet on."

CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves was equally upbeat. He says the video-on-demand (VOD) showings offer "an additional revenue stream without affecting the mother lode" from advertising.

NBC Universal reached similar terms enabling DirecTV to offer new episodes of Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: CI, The Office, Monk, Surface and Battlestar Galactica.

Hours after they initially air, DirecTV will transmit them to the hard drive in homes that have receivers with the new DirecTV Plus DVR, which the company says will hit the shelves this week.

Viewers will be charged 99 cents to watch an episode as often as they wish for 24 hours. It will be wiped off the hard drive once the next episode of the show airs and cannot be saved on other devices.

"This isn't an acquisition model. This is more of a rental model," says NBC Universal Cable President David Zaslav.

The decision to charge 99 cents "wasn't scientific," he adds. "It's low enough to attract viewers, and it felt like an amount that's in balance" with payments for movies and other VOD programming.

The networks and distributors will split the revenue, but they declined to discuss financial terms.

The CBS-Comcast deal will strip out local commercials, but leave in national ads. Viewers will be able to fast-forward through them.

Shows will be ad-free in the deal between NBC and DirecTV.

If the split mimics most VOD deals — programmers and distributors sharing proceeds equally — it should pay off for the networks, even if some viewers skip the regularly scheduled airing and pay to watch an ad-free version.

That's because advertisers pay the equivalent of about 36 cents an hour per prime-time viewer, CBS research chief David Poltrack calculated last year.

I've gotta say that DirecTV customer service *SUCKS* -- I've worked in large corporations and they always know years in advance what's coming up -- when I hear from DirecTV that "they don't know" when San Diego is getting more HDTV channels, I get an "I don't know" and I *know* that it's bullshit.

The twangy buttermilk voiced customer service Texas kids are uniformly clueless, but when you wait for a superviser they're just as clueless as the front-line kids. They have an effecient billing department, but that's really all I can say that's positive. If it wasn't for the Sunday Ticket package I'd drop DirecTV like a bad habit.

DirecTV has GREAT customer service. Try comparing it to Cable and Dish Network and you'll see what bad customer service is all about. Its like comparing a Benz to a Hyundai. You gotta know who to call at DirecTV to get things done. Calling the regular customer service number isn't gonna get you what you want. Call Retention, and you will be shocked at what you can get accomplished...

egg-zakly... did you get in on the HR-10 HD DirecTivo unit for $199 in the past few weeks by calling the customer retention number? this box was $999 just 5 months ago! what a smokin deal that was! and they will swap it out for a new MPEG4 box when they switch to the new technology soon. i raped customer retention... got 6 months free HD programming, free SuperFan with purchase of NFL Sunday ticket, free HBO & Showtime for 6 months, free delivery and OTA antenna (WineGard) of my HR-10 unit and of course free pro installation included in the $199 package deal. i'm lovin it! just gotta find out how to slam another 300+ gb drive in the TiVo box and I'll be good to go :)

you know, i didn't. i wasn't looking for a DVR now, but now I am. I wish I did call then cause i think that deal is no longer around. When you called to get that great deal what exactly do you say? I know everyone was getting those deals a little while back...
I will give it a shot tomorrow and see what i can get. The new R15 just came out, and i'm not convinced its the one to go with over the old TiVo units. There's only 1 live buffer and if you're watching to games at once, you won't be able to go back and forth and catch up on the games by hitting the Live TV button like you can on the current DirecTiVo's. It does have a bunch of advantages though including a larger hard drive and future VOD features...

looks like some people are still getting good deals, some aren't. depends on the customer service rep you get.
