Here's a possible feature story for Howard 100 news:
Go back and investigate the stalemate between Viacom (owners of Channel 9 in New York) and Howard Stern Productions over ownership rights to the original "Channel 9" HOWARD STERN SHOW.
The ending was kind of rough - when Stern went on vacation, the FCC announced $1.7M in fines...on Friday afternoon when Howard left for the two-week summer break. And on the following Monday morning, Viacom announced that they were not renewing the STERN program due to escalating costs and problems with the production schedule (essentially, taping the show Thursday evenings in time to edit and air on Saturday evenings).
I'm pretty sure I have the correct timeline...everything happened in a short span of 3-4 days.
The timing was clearly planned - waiit until Viacom couldn't get hammered, so that when Howard returned from vacation, it would already be "old news."
The owners/management clearly had issues with Stern - unlike Infinity, I don't believe they even set an outrageous price for the footage... they just refuse to sell the episodes, PERIOD.
I'm sure other people would like a look back at that show, remembering certain segments, as well as getting a clarification on what exactly went down, and what the status is currently.
Since the Stern radio show started getting syndicated in many markets AFTER the Channel 9 show went off the air, this would actually be an INTRODUCTION to that program. |

| I'm a big fan of the Channel 9 Show and enjoy watching them once a year or so. I'd love to know the true behind-the-scenes story of that show. MrJeff200's news story idea is excellent, but I think the entire history of the Channel 9 show could be explored. Imagine, if you will, a one-hour audio documentary along the lines of NBC's recent SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE IN THE EIGHTIES special. I realize that clips from the TV show could not be played, but the shows and the guests and the sketches and the scams could all be discussed, with recollections from Howard, Robin, the gang, TV producer Dan Foreman and, natch, guest stars like Dawn Wells, Frank Stallone, Geraldo, etc. The Channel 9 show is a huge piece of Howard's creative development and career trajectory. Unfortunately, its place in his history is in danger of being lost because of the rights issue. This documentary would allow Howard to reclaim the show's legacy on his own terms. |

I found out from howard 100 that ralph cirella worked for free over at channel 9. I'd love to hear ralph talk about what he did. If not mistaken he created the masks howard would wear, that was a fun part of the show.
I think they might've destroyed the masters. It doesn't make $ense that it's not on DVD. How many episode were there altogether? |

| According to multiple illegal sellers on ebay, there are 69 episodes - people have converted them to DVD and sell them commercial-free. |

that is foul, i'm surprised ebay/paypal lets that fly. bong hit said he works at home in a mail order business. Hope he's not that guy.
How about file sharing? Does anyone know what I should put in the search field to find some of the 69 episodes. i've got ripcast also, are there any howard stern fan radio shows on shoutcast?
When i had broadband, i use to download a bunch of howard off the newsgroup, my new dialup account doesn't let me access it.
BTW, fans sharing with each other is fair use, selling cd-r and dvds on ebay isn't. |
