Which SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver is right for me?
----------
This thread is a guide to help people pick out which SIRIUS Satellite Radio receiver is right them.
Most of these receivers/optional equipment are available from TSS-Radio and Sirius.com , I personally like 'TSS-Radio' more because they're professional yet personable. TSS-Radio is also now SFN's official Sirius hardware retailer and sponsor of this forum.
Some of the items (like the original Starmate & original Sportster) aren't available on these sites but can be bought from RadioShack or other online/retail stores.

Which home receivers have a good auto-on and auto-off timer (event or channel based recording)? I want to record the show each day and need the unit to wake itself up and shut itself off after Howard is done.
I've got a Kenwood Here 2 Anywhere, but it only has the useless "alarm" feature and the not very useful "Program Alert" which gives out a beep and a text alert only when it's already on, it does not turn on the unit itself.
Good thread! |

Why not also mention the XACT Stream Jockey, which, when used with the XACT Power Pod, is the only truly portable system other than a boom box?
It's interesting that Sirius does not sell or even mention the Power Pod. Perhaps because it might affect S50 sales? |

I updated my P&P list, if anyone has any reviews of any device not listed please feel free to post them - I just made a rough list of the more popular devices to help people decide which SIRIUS receiver would be right for them.
And to your comment about SIRIUS not showing off the XAct Power Pod; SIRIUS's website & shop don't sell/show the original Starmate & original Sportster anymore. But I would imagine if there was a reason for SIRIUS to take down the Power Pod from their site/store it might be because people were buying it under the impression they could use it like a walkman but in reality unless you live in a metro area with ground repeaters it's not gonna work that good, unless you have it out to a constant view of the sky.
Just my opinion. |

Just a heads up for anyone that has ordered or plans to order the S50 anytime soon...
You will need to pick up an 'AC-to-DC Portable Power Supply' like THIS ONE to use the S50's car dock in your house because the S50's home kit won't be available for a little while. |

It is almost the same as the SIRIUS One but the guy over at Get SIRIUS Info said that the Visor felt cheap where as the SIRIUS One felt solid in his review of the SIRIUS One, which can be read HERE*.
*-there are many typos in GSI's reviews because they rush them out as fast as they can to let people know about the products, but the reviews are still really good. |

Updated rebates reply with the new RadioShack $25 gift card offer, which applies to all of the SIRIUS receivers that RadioShack offers.

| I spent the day reading this board, reading reviews from any website I could find and I'm more confused now than I was when I started. I was going to purchase the Sanyo package on sale at Sirius.com until I read the bad reviews about it. I like all the features of being able to listen in the car and then at home or out by the pool, with access to AM/FM also. Does anyone have this model and like it, or have any other suggestions. I'm open to anything below $200 TIA! :) http://shop.sirius.com/edealinv/ser...ldParentID=7871 |

With a $200 budget you might consider buying one of the newer receivers, like the Sportster Replay or Starmate Replay. These give you time-shift features like pause and forward. The sportster replay and boombox would be a nice combo. By the way, all of these receivers allow you to listen in the car, at home, in the office, etc. There' s nothing really special about the Sanyo unit.
If you don't want the time-shift features, then go with the Sanyo.

Thanks for your help boombox, but what about the bad reviews on the Sanyo?
So then it basically comes down to what features do I want on the boombox, such as AM/FM radio? (I listen to a few local shows) I do like the idea of being able to Pause, FF or Rewind, but I haven't found a boombox for Starmate Replay or Sportster Replay that offers AM/FM. Oh and I also need to be able to use my wireless headset so a headset jack is a must. UGH, wish someone would offer a boombox you can customize. |

| I just had another idea. *proves I haven't killed ALL my braincells* I have a AM/FM/CD player boombox I really like. Is it possible to get the Sportster Replay or Starmate Replay with car/home hook up's and just use it thru the boombox that I have by the pool, or with my home stereo in the house or in the car? Sorry to be such a pain in the ass but I get so frustrated buying stuff that is outdated and useless within 6 months. |

Your dilema boils down to a simple question: Do you want time-shift features(44 minute memory buffer that allows pausing) or not?
If yes, then go with with the replay and the boombox. For your local AM/FM stations that you listen to, just use a small, portable AM/FM radio. You can get one the size of your watch.
If time-shift features are not a "must-have", then go with the Sanyo. Forget what the reviews say. Sanyo has sold thousands of these, and those are just a few reviews. Also, you don't know who wrote those reviews and their motives. Could be people from another receiver manufacturer bashing their competition, or could be an XMer trying to scare potential Sirius subscribers. I know several people who have the Sanyo and they're very happy. As long as you're OK with fewer features go for it!! You won't regret it.
Don't hesitate too much over it, you'll drive yourself crazy. In the end you'll be happy with whichever purchase you make. Good luck and enjoy! You're gonna love Sirius so much, in the end, you'll slowly abandon AM/FM, forever. |

This is ultimately the real problem you're having :)
Just accept the fact that no matter what you buy today, it will be outdated, but not useless, in 6 months. This technology is new and changing very quickly. Just let go of trying to control the inevitable, and you'll be at peace with your decision. |

I've narrowed it down to the Sanyo or Sportster since those have the boombox. Can I ask what you have?
What is involved in hooking either up to a home entertainment center? Do I need to have an available input jack? |

I have the Sportser Replay (which is exactly like the Sportster).
To hook it up to a home entertainment system you need the home kit, which has everything you need to have SIRIUS playing on your home entertainment system. You can either use the headphone out-to-stereo cable to plug it into your entertainment system or use the built-in FM transmitter to send SIRIUS to a FM dial where then you can tune into that station and listen (no available input jacks needed). Even if you use the stereo cable to hook up your SIRIUS, you can still use the FM transmitter to pick up SIRIUS in other rooms of your house. |

Wife just bought me the Sportster Replay for my birthday yesterday. The store told her that by Christmas, there will be a new Sportster? model that records/timeshifts for 5 hours! That's what I'd rather get... and it's only a few weeks away...
Anyone else hear of this??
I'm also torn over which subscription to get. Since 'Lifetime' only means receiver appliance life, what happens if I upgrade receivers? Will I have to pay again for another subscription? Can I transfer the 'Lifetime' subscription from the first (and deactivate that one) to the newer receiver? |

There isn't going to be a new Sportster by Christmas - SIRIUS usually sends out promotional information about new receivers to SIRIUS sites & stores that carry SIRIUS products a month or so before they're released. The only new products coming out soon are:
-Streamer Replay (which is basically the Sportster Replay but in black)
-Streamer GTR (which is basically the Starmate Replay but in a dark gray/black color)
-Xact Replay (which is basically the Starmate Replay but made by Xact not Directed Electronics)
-Audiovox SIRCMB5 (which is basically the Starmate Replay but a little different shape/color/screen color/...)

-If you want to upgrade your receiver meaning get a new receiver I think you can switch the lifetime over to a new receiver like 2-4 times (at least that's what I heard). If you want to upgrade meaning you want to add an additional receiver you'd just have to pay the $500 once and then pay the $6.99 a month or whatever for the second receiver. |

Thanks, DM! I wonder what the salesman was talking about, then? Maybe one of those you listed. She bought it in a Radio Shack, and the guy just advised her that this 5-hr recordable one will be out by the holidays.
Frankly, while the 44-min recording/shift time is practically useless to me, it might not matter. I'd love to record the whole Show for playback after work, but if Howard repeats the broadcast, it's moot.
This is a great thread, as most of yours always are! Thanks for all the info. You always help out your clueless SFN brothers! Much appreciated! |

Maybe he was talking about the S50 which can record up to 50 hours of SIRIUS content. |

Please read if you want an S50. This model is a poor choice for an MP3 player. The copyright restrictions limit the tapeable shows to 20. You must delete shows before taping more. The time you can tape is limited (2 hour blocks). Music can not be taped. Also, the space on the player is limited compared to a Creative Zen or Ipod.
If you want to tape shows read up on taping to a computer and using an MP3 player with no copyright issues (RIAA has limited the Sirius s50). Personally, I plug my Sirius into my Compaq Presario and use a program called Audio Cleaning Lab to use timed recordings. The time per MP3 recording is unlimited per file. I can place a whole Stern Show in one file. I also tape the following Sirius shows: BBC 1 Essential Collection, Sirius 1 Countdown, Blender Countdown, and Howard100 News. Why tape 25 shows to an S50 when a Creative Zen 60GB (My player) or Ipod 60GB holds 50,000 hrs of mp3s. :D |

You can tape up to 20 back to back two hour shows blocks, not 25 1 hour blocks.
Music can be taped by leaving the S50 on the channels you want to listen to. It automatically starts recording live music channels you're listening to for the 3 most listened to channels. If you want some Hard Attack on your S50, turn to Hard Attack and let it start recording as much as you want it to, then turn to another channel you want, like Octane - record as much as you want (just by leaving it on that channel). Then if you want to fill it up with another channel like Faction, turn to that channel and let it record some of that channel by just leaving it on that channel. Or you could just fill your S50 with just a shit load of just one channel. It's all up to you.
It's super simple and is nice because you just have to turn it to the channel you want to record, no need to tell it to record. Then when you're listening to the recorded music you can 'love' songs to save them to your S50 so you can listen to them whenever you want.
I have had SIRIUS since the summer with the Sporster Replay (gave it to my mom now), and I must say that I really love the S50. I thought I would be pissed off about the missing ability to schedule music channels but the way they worked it out is really nice - I like how I don't have to tell it to record, I just turn to a music channel I want and leave it there and it fills up my S50 with music for me to listen to whenever I want. |

| I just got my S50 and still haven't hooked it up. Still waiting for the home dock. Is there going to be any problem taping Howard's show due to copyright issues? The guy at Sirius called me back and said that there "probably won't be". I know that there are people now having difficulty. Does anyone here have an answer? Also, if I went to Radio Shack and got a AC/DC adapter do you just stick the car antenna out of a window? Thanks for your time....I am a real newbie with this. |

No, I seriously doubt that there will be any problems recording the show. You can currently record Howard 100 News and any other show that's on the channel, and Howard himself said he has the S50 and uses it to record/listen to shows on his channel.

I had an extra home antenna so I just used it, but my friend just put a $.40 piece of sheet metal out the window with the car antenna on it to get reception 'til he gets his home kit. Circuit City currently has the home kits available online, so if you need a home kit now you could order one on their site. |

I recieved an email request to show how to record Howard Stern as MP3 Files as compared to using an S50, an Ipod or Creative Nomad may be used as storage for Mp3 Files, "Blumpkin King,
For Taping the Howard Strern 100 channel, I use a Sanyo Sirius Reciever that uses fm broadcast around my house. I turn my radio (RCA Surround Sound Reciever from Radio Shack) on to the chosen recieve station. My stereo has output ports that are rca jacks so I bought an inexpensive wire from Walmart that had rca plugs on one side and a minijack port (headphone jack) on the other http://www.walmart.com/catalog/prod...uct_id=3579191. One end of the wire goes from the stereo output port labled tape (deck) L R. Then I plug the mini port into my computer mike port (Compaq Presario Notebook). Then I use a piece of software I got from Comp USA called Audio Cleaning Lab from Magix. This software allows conversion of Records, Tapes and and makes recordings from the mike port. The software allows conversion to CDR-RW, DVDR-RW or MP3 (I have been using MP3 output for Howard Stern. I use CDR for Records and Tapes. Today, I recieved a coupon for it http://site.magix.net/index.php?21391. Then I tell the program to start taping and stop taping at a certain time. I must leave my Sanyo and stereo on the correct channels with volume turned down. My Computer records while I am at work. Then, I edit out comercials or unwanted content by cutting from the wave graphic readout. Then I Click MP3 output and save the file as MP3 and transfer to my MP3 player. I use a Creative Zen Xtra as an MP3 Player I got from J & R Music world on Amazon.com in 2003. My System Snapshot on my Creative says it has 9292 tracks 1302 Albums 51 GB used and 9 GB free (9292 hours of music and radio shows stored and backed up on a hard drive and DVD Data Discs). FYI I tape shows like BBC ch 11 Essential Selection, Sirius Hits 1 Countdown, Maxim Blender Countdown, in addition to Howard Stern. If Howard were available via Sirius Player http://mpcache.sirius.com/servlet/M...&streamNumber=& I could record by tuning my Compaq Laptop to the Sirius radio channel and using the same procedure above, but the wire I use has a miniport plug on each end. One end goes into the mike port the other goes into the headphones jack of my Computer.
Take it easy,
Howard

I saw your post to the sirius board. I was wondering if you could please explain exactly how you record to your ipod from the sirius receiver. I was going to buy a s50 unitl I read your helpful post. I just don't know how to go about getting started and which reciever to get that would be best for this. I really want to basically copy your system. It seems like the best way for me to be able to listen to the whole show. Thank you very much. Greg

| Could one use that software and Wal-Mart wire to convert vinyl records to mp3? |
|
|
| iam72hrstv |
| Converting vinyl to MP3 is one of the main aplications. For my Wife's birthday I converted her 100 records and 200 singles to MP3 and transfered them to her MP3 player. The program cleans tape hiss, record pops and cracklles and adds stereo seperation for analog mono recordings. |

Hi, can anyone with the home kit for the starmate st2 tell me how to attach the unit to the cradle? I have two units in the house and both seem to be missing a piece that enables the unit to attach to the bracket.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks |
|
|
| Blumpkin King |
If you look at the back of the box of the home kit it shows you a pic. Lay the metal peice so that the longest end is sitting flat. There are two pieces at the bottom, about a 1/2" off the ground, and you slip the starmate into those . The starmate has an little inlet between the front and back of the unit. put the bottom pieces in that inlet and move the unit a little forward. The top will clip in. Hard to explain, but hopefully this helps. It took me a couple of minutes as well because it is not explained well. I used the pics on the back of the home kit package to figure it out.
Good luck

re: sirius one
I have had this unit for a couple of weeks and have to say i am very impressed with it. For those that do have it, or are thinking about purchasing it, here is an e-mail i got from sirius regarding a home
kit:
"Thanks for contacting Customer Care. We will be happy to help. The
SIRIUS 1 home kit will be out at the end of the month. There are none
that are compatible with this radio."
If a senior member of the board could post this as a new thread, people may like to know that the kit is coming. I , as a junior membor, cannot creat a thread. |

| Why don't you get those idiots at Sirius to be honest with "boombox" customers. Aquiring siginal is getting very old now, especially when it happens during Howards show. If I can receive a siginal uninterupted in my car, even in the car wash there is no reason that plastic piece of crap they call an antenna that I have mounted in more places than Hugh Hefner can't work! |
|

| Sirius radio overcharged me 50 dollars when I signed up for a lifetime subscription. I have called 8 times and sent email trying to get my money back but for some reason they just won't so it. What is their problem? I signed up to listen to Howard everyday but am getting so pissed I may have contact my credit card company and just cancel the whole thing. It's not just the 50 bucks but I feel ripped off. |

Do yourself a favor and get an outdoor antenna.
I have on of these mounted on the side of my house. I've NEVER had anything less than 100% signal strength since it was installed.

| So if all I wanted to do was listen in the car, and then tape the rest of the show in my office via a cassette boombox, and money was an issue, what would you recommend I get? Thanks and apologies in advance if this question has already been answered. |

| I think this answers my question, because I too have that plastic piece of crap antenna with little to no reception. I NEED HELP ! I want to listen inside but can hardly ever get a signal. Also, does anyone else find that the hotter the sporster boombox gets the worse the reception ?? |

| I have had Sirius for 3 years and the receiver I have in my car is probably in the Sirius Museum. I want to upgrade my receiver and I want one that I can take from the car into my office at work. What do you suggest? |

Greetings all. I am thinking seriously about getting an S50 for my new Jeep Laredo, but I'm a bit concerned about the visibility of the screen: the ability to glance down and quickly see if I'm on the right channel, who's playing, etc. I don't need portabilty because I have an Xact Stream Jocky with the Boombox.
Any recommendations?
Thanks! |

What happened to the SiriusConnect Home Tuner that was announced in January at the CES show (think it was that one)?
There was a photo.
It's very similar to the SiriusConnect units for car tuners except that it has stereo RCA outputs and Digital Optical out as well.
The announced price was $50 and the release date was April.
I can no longer find anything about this little handy unit. |

| What I'm wondering is how FM signals can go thru trees an homes but not the satelite signal? Why is it when I pass under trees the signal goes away? They need to set up a system where the satelite signal goes thru the FM ground antennas and bounced to your sat radio. |

It's all in the physics. Totally different physics, you're talking about ~100MHz FM signals versus ~2400MHz satellite. FM signals bounce all over the place, off just about every object, buildings, streets, walls, eventually the FM signal reaches the antenna. Not so with satellite signals, they don't bounce around, that's why you need a straight, unobstructed, direct-line-of-sight path to your satellite antenna. There's no way around the laws of physics. |

| Yeah well I still don't like it ....LOL But they gotta find a better way, I mean just driving under a couple of trees shouldn't block a signal, since we're paying for it. |

I had an S50 for a week and it was awful. The biggest advantage IMHO is being able to record things you can't listen to. Of course, the only option for the player is the car kit. So if I want to record something while I am asleep I would have to wake up, pull my car out of the garage and leave the ignition on so it has a signal and power. So, I paid the additional $100 for the home kit.
Then when I tried to set it to record Howard it only lets you set 2 hours per recording. So I set two recordings (I'm so clever), one from 5am to 7am (central time) and the second from 7-9 (I can hear the last hour or more live). The problem is that it doesn't allow the second recording to start. The tech support said I had to leave at least 5 minutes between recordings.
I exchanged it for the starmate replay and couldn't be happier. |

I have the Sportster Replay. I love it. Hate the tree - signal loss thing tho. I ordered the executive docking station from Best Buy... then a week later I got an e-mail saying it was discontinued. :(
Anybody know a place to get one thats cheaper then $150?
Also XM has like 4 different portable models... when is Sirius going to get one?
Thanks for the helpful thread |

| I went with the xact jockey II whole set up and the thing has gone belly up twice. The plug and play unit that goes into the home/boombox/car set up needs to be replaced AGAIN and they want the whole setup sent back, antenna, plugs, cords to replace the one little central unit. I was really pleasant with the xact people but they were unwavering in the policy that I have to send it all back. I would stay away from xact stuff. |

Greetings. I am trying to install an eave-mounted antenna for this boom box for better reception in Central Florida. I plan to run the wire through the eave, through the wall and through an outlet to the boom box.
I bought a Terk SIR6 only to find the male plug that goes into the XS025 antenna in port is too short. As a result, I get a continuing no antenna found error. Calls to both Xact (yes, I spoke to a real Xact human) and Terk produced the same statement: our fittings are industry standard. They clearly are not. The Xact guy suggested placing the boom box antenna outside. Unfortunately, the cord is too short for what I'm trying to do and they don't sell extensions.
Any suggestions before I scrap the whole mess and buy a more reliable, supported product line? |

Oh yeah, I got the Starmate Replay -- anyway, HERE'S THE DEAL:
I got some issues, man. I'm living in Portland, OR and we got this dumb ass Christian radio station that totally F*cks with my reception, KBVM 88.3 FM, Catholic Broadcasting Northwest ( http://www.kbvm.fm/ ). Their signal is too damn strong, and it always cuts into my SIRIUS experience on 88.1 and 88.5 -- and let me tell you, it really SUCKS when I'm listening to some hot whores getting off on the Sibian, or Robin talking about shoving veggies up her cooter, and then having some Christian Snake Oil Salesman cutting in on my broadcast, telling me how to save my soul, how to bomb an abortion clinic, and how to give him money, the stupid f*cks!
Anyway, I went to the FCC website to post a complaint against these religious zealots but the only complaint parameter they were offering, that I could find, was on indecency, whatever the f*ck that means. So who knows how I can go about complaining against these guys? Where can I turn to for help? My ultimate goal would be to have them off the radio altogether so they can broadcast their fear to no one. If we can all band together we can get these Catholics off the radio completely -- because to me this is real indecency, selling salvation for a price.
Thank you for your time.

| I've got the Sportster (not the replay - old skool mcgillicutty) with a boombox for normal listening, and the home docking kit rigged up to my computer for recording Howard in the morning. It makes it easy to save the show for later listening since my hours make even the replays infeasible. |
