help! best all-in-1 solution? (home/car/office) - Click HERE to go to the original thread with graphics
Buck Futter
wondering if anyone has any suggestions..... i want to get one unit that will allow me to listen at home, in the car, and at work... is there one thing that can do all three? or would I need a car stereo type thing installed and have one separate for work/home? because my car stereo is a stock cd player, no tape input for a cd adapter or whatever.

thanks

Any of the plug and play models will work. You can use the FM modulator to send the signal to your car stereo.

so, if i get this:

Sirius Sportster Portable Boombox Audio System for Sirius Satellite Radio Tuners - Silver/Black

Model: SPB1

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...d=1093469012071

i can just take it wherever and not have to go through a hassle of setting up or plugging in to my car stereo system, etc/?

thanks!!!

You can't plug that into your cigarette lighter for power. You would need the Sporster and a car kit, which comes with it, to use it in your car and you can use the boombox at home and at work.

I recommend that you check out the XACT XTR1 in conjuction with the XACT Universal Kit and XACT Power Pod. This would allow you to listen in the car, walking around, at home or in the office.

See my longer post under the Sirius S 50 thread.

I don't work for XACT, although I might sound like it because I'm very happy with the Power Pod as the only true Sirius portable radio, other than a boombox.

How about the Sanyo Boombox deal

For another $50 you can also get the home kit to hook it up to the stereo. Then, the only thing you have to move is the receiver and can leave the boom-box at the office. Just hope you get reception at work.

So this setup would work for me i guess?? i have a 15 minute drive to work but when i get up in the morning i blast howard all through the house then get in the car and drive. i get about 15-20 minutes of howard depending on commercials..

heres my situation though. i work in an office building on a single level floor about 25 feet away from a window. im in southern california about 35 minutes east of los angeles. would this set up still work for me? i currently listen to the show on headphones all morning so far. ive read about "repeaters" still being able to go through walls for certain areas and such.

any help would be appreciated! im dying to get it finally just want to get the right one thats versitle for car/home/OFFICE until a true portable comes out.

thanks again

No one will be able to tell you what's going to work in your area. You're the only one who will be able to answer this by experimentation. You will never know which solution is the "right one" until you try it. Regarding "get the right one... until a true portable comes out", this is a huge misconception because few people understand how satellite radio works. Anyone waiting for the "true portable" will be waiting forever. Satellite signals don't travel like FM, bouncing off objects, eventually reaching your receiver. Satellite signals require a clear straight line-of-sight, that's why satellite TV dishes are fixed to an exact location. Any sat portable that comes out in the future will be limited to the signal coverage by ground repeaters, just like cell phones. They will always have some reception problems when you move around and you're not in an area well covered by ground repeaters. It's the reality. Those who don't accept it will be very disappointed when the "true portable" finally comes out. By the way, the XTR1 with the XS028 is a true portable.

My advice to you is to go to a store with a 30-day return policy, like circuitcity, bestbuy and start buying the receiver you like, take it home/office/car and try it under all conditions until you're convinced that it works for you. Don't rely on what works for others, you'll be wasting your time. Another tip: Sirius signal is strongest when the antenna is pointing to North Central US, around South Dakota(obviously not always possible to do).

Good luck and enjoy! And remember, give up on the dream of a perfect "live" portable that everyone on these forums is expecting. Only those in an area well covered by ground repeaters will achieve this dream :) And ofcourse, Sirius will continue to expand their ground repeater coverage as more subscribers sign up, but they have to have enough subs in that area to cover the $100,000 cost of a repeater. The same is true with cellulars, that's why there are still dead spots around the US even though these cellular companies have been around much longer and have 70 billion in revenue. Eventually, when more people become better informed about sat radio, they will accept this reality.
