      Depends on how long it takes to run a larger gas line to where it's being installed. Typical 50 gallon water heater uses 40,000 btus. The smallest tankless uses almost 200,000 btus, so in most cases there is an inadequate gas supply to where the heating/hot water making equipment is located. Generally it costs 2.5 times more to replace a standard water heater with a tankless model.
