If Zimmerman had been charged with manslaughter, the Treyvon case is nothing but a regional story for a couple days. Tops.

There is outrage but those African American people who commit the crimes end up being prosecuted and sent to jail.The issue is when a man can stalk,shoot and kill a African American kid just walking through the streets unarmed and not causing any trouble.And I believe the outrage is that killer only gets questioned and released and the local police decides not to do an investigation..

Yes I believe Al Sharpton and Jackson are slimy,greedy,crooks who chase the almighty dollar but this matters to all black people.It says if your black then you are still a 2nd class citizen in the eyes of some white people...If I'm wrong then why is it only white people(Hannity,Limaugh)that totally believe this is just an "Unfortunate accident"that wouldn't have been caused if the kid was a white kid.

Valid points, but if Al and Jesse really want to help the black community, they would make better use of their time by trying to cut down on black on black violence, reduce teen pregnancy and single-parent families, encourage black communities to help police investigations, and promote education. Yes, these are problems that are associated with poverty moreso than skin color, but nevertheless these are problems affecting a significant number of black Americans today. Regardless of whether this case is being handled properly, there are bigger fish for Al and Jesse to fry than the isolated murder of one person.

If Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton don't bitch about black-on-black crime, racists say;

"you see? They only care about crimes on blacks perpetrated by whites! They ignore black-on-black crime! They're all racists!"

And if they do bitch about black-on-black crime, they say;
"What's the difference? Crime is crime. They should be concerned about any crime they commit. What they're really doing is telling their thug constituents 'don't commit a crime against another black. Keep it to whites only!' What a bunch of racists!"

As we can all see, black Americans don't care about dead black teens -- unless there is a white (or "white Hispanic") person to get angry at.

If Al or Jesse started going to black communities and speaking out against violence, gang activity, drugs, and guns while promoting education and careers, you really think "racists" would construe that as them encouraging black violence against whites? That's a stretch.

And even if racists did construe it that way, justifying Al and Jesse's racially-biased behavior, which comes at the expense of them addressing larger issues affecting black Americans, by saying "racists won't like them no matter what they do" is also a ploy that makes it impossible for them to do anything wrong.

Blacks have aborted away nearly a third of their population since the 70's, i doubt they care about black on black crime.

You think they don't do that? That's what these guys do. Everybody used to make fun of Jesse Jackson and getting school kids to repeat "I am....Somebody!" but that's just what your saying he doesn't do, but should. The truth is that he does. He's done that for decades. But that kind of stuff doesn't sell papers, that kind of stuff doesn't get you to tune into CNN, so it doesn't get reported.

Now, I lived through the seventies and eighties. And there was some ignorant shit going on. When Jesse Jackson was touring schools with his message of hope and his Rainbow Coalition to try to get young black students to not take drugs, stay in school and make something of themselves, lots of conservative white people hated him. Hated him. "Doesn't he know," they'd say, "that niggers can't learn?"

When I read some of the stuff in this thread, it makes we wonder how far we've really come.

What it does, is make it impossible to do anything to better the downtrodden in society...which is exactly what certain segments of this society would like.
You can't say "why are they concentrating on Treyvon Martin when there are so many other problems they should address." for two reasons:

1- They are addressing these problems. You don't read about it because it's not good press, but they do.
2- We can't just look at the biggest crime and say "everyone should ignore every other crime and just concentrate on this one," because that basically can be said about everything. Every dumbass who has ever gotten a ticket for driving without his seat belts has said "Humph! Three blocks from here someone's breaking into a house, and the police are after me for driving without a seat belt." But that kind of thinking makes driving without a seat belt de facto legal. Where does it stop? Then a serial killer would say; "You're arresting me?! Thousands of kids have died in Iraq and Afghanistan for bullshit reasons and you're arresting me for killing a few hookers?" The law must be enforced equally, or we devolve into anarchy.

If these guys really are trying to motivate black Americans to improve their own lives, then I take back what I said. I follow the news pretty regularly and never see anything about that, and only see them involved when their is someone other than a black person to blame, but as you said, that news may not sell.


What I see is these guys organizing marches and protests to bring justice to Trayvon Martin in Florida while here in NYC there are reports of murders of young, anonymous black men on a weekly basis. Many times the reports say that police are looking for clues as to who committed the crime. I don't see Al or Jesse calling for an investigation or organizing marches for these men. I don't see Al or Jesse speaking out against gun violence when an innocent black American is shot and killed in gunfire. I only see them show up when there is a white person involved. While they are civil rights activists, "civil rights" includes a variety of injustices, and not just wrongs by non-blacks against blacks.

To me, it isn't about whether taking up the Trayvon Martin cause is worthy; it is about Al and Jesse not doing what is best in the big picture for the people they claim to serve, and I suspect it is because they know it is much easier to sell a "you wronged me" mentality than it is to get people to look in the mirror.
