AGT's bullshit "$1 million prize"

I'm pretty sure Howard ragged on other talent shows for the pathetic prizes they offered. Yet, here he is constantly saying winning AGT is worth $1M.

The truth? Nooooooot exactly. If you catch the small print at the end of each episode, the million dollar prize is payable in an annuity over 40 (yes, FORTY) years. Or, they can take a lump payment of the current value, which, according to my completely nonsensical calculations, is worth MAYBE $100,00. FORTY FUCKING YEARS!!! That's $25k/yr BEFORE taxes. It's a load of bullshit.

That said, I imagine a lot of the acts will be seeing significant bumps in pay from exposure on the show. Maybe. For a while.

I pretty sure Howard bitched about the prize structure for AGT a few years ago. He wouldn't do it now, but you're right, it's really a bullshit prize. Although, it does look like 25K a year pre-tax would be a big windfall for some of the people who have auditioned.

Yeah, and to go through ALL that hard work and time... I make that much in 3 years as an IT guy. I guess if you're a fame whore or that ALL you do, then go for it. But it seems like too much work for little reward.

they should deduct $333333.33 from the 3 celebrity judges. why are they able to pay stern 20 mil but not give the actual winner a decent prize

AGT had Jessica Sanchez on first, she's going on to a great career. Jackie Evancho is killing it everywhere she plays. If you have not heard them.

Jessica, Apparently Jessica is the first second place winner that was not offered a full record contract for a $170,000 advance on the record. She's only been offered an EP four song advance of 30,000. That's Idol's second place she did not go too far on AGT.

Jackie Evancho, she swallowed a 45 year old woman

Agreed if that's how the prize is awarded it's total bullshit considering how much everyone else is making off other peoples dreams. Fuckin sucks.

WGAF what they are paying these attention whore retards? Howard should be bitching about the show that is paying him 20mil and possibly the same again for years to come if he continues to judge?
  16. buckefilbert Full Member

To be fair Howard should make sure the contestants get the prize they are promised. Surely he must see how unbalanced, unfair and fucked the pie in the sky illusion they are selling is. WTF

You know the networks don't wait 40 years to collect their advertising money. They are as bad as the Wall Street scum.

Bottom line if you're getting 20 mil a season I guess you just don't give a shit about anybody else.

Are you dense or what? The contestants can find out how they are going to be paid(just like someone on this forum did) and are more than likely given legal paperwork that spells it out, to read over and sign before they even compete. Lastly Howard is hired to be a judge, not negotiate payments for contestants.

Hey nice to meet you as well. I'm sure the contract you have to sign to be a contestant on AGT looks like a fuckin phone book. I seriously doubt the contestants are savvy enough to filter through all the legalese and come up with some kind of realistic realization of what's involved.

They just want to be discovered. NBC and it's lawyers prey on that kind of shit.

Every time Howard says, "are you a million dollar act"? he's being an NBC agent/representitive
promising something that is not going to happen.

The only fair way to do it is..who ever wins gets handed a million dollar check from NBC. No if ands or butts or excuses. In fact it should be a part of the show when the winning act is awarded
    that million dollar check.

Any thing else is just uncivilized bullshit.

I'd venture to guess that's exactly why we don't get to see the winning act receive it's check. If NBC was awarding a million dollar check to someone they would make a big deal of it.

Nice to meet you too... I wont disagree that NBC and their lawyers are probably scum and of course they prey on that kind of shit, they also have no shortage of people willing to be "preyed" on. I also dont disagree that it would be fair to actually give them a million dollars. I'm just saying that most of these people are adults and they know what they are getting into, and the ones that arent are represented by their parents/guardians and its their job to know what they are getting their little shitheads into. They are going to win a million dollars after taxes and paid out over 40 years(lol okay that is way ridiculous but whatever).

When you get hired at a job for lets say 65k a year, do you go in and bitch at the company/boss at the end of the year when you didn't actually get a lump sum check for 65k with no taxes taken out?
  21. buckefilbert Full Member

The in bold made me laugh hard. You have valid points but as we all know most of these contestants are struggling people just trying to make their dreams come true they don't have a team of lawyers at their disposal to filter through the BS not that it would probably make a difference but if you're promising a million give a fuckin million and wash your hands of the consequences.

End of debate, end of controversy.

In the end Howard is trying to sell himself to America as a whole so he can land Wink Martindale's job on some game show. He doesn't need to sell himself out to do it.

I've always thought of Howard as purveyor of the truth as far as I can tell he's selling out the truth every time he utters those words, "are you a million dollar act"?

As you agreed the solution is simple a 7 figure check awarded to the winning act over the air on completion of the contest.

I can not believe how many trips to NJ Howard's going to have to make.
I thought it was one trip for the the grand prize award. How many times does he need to see these acts.
  23. buckefilbert Full Member

I think there are 18 live shows, 8 scheduled in July alone. Google:). Once we get into the live shows we can say goodbye to all that MTV mental masturbation shit they've been selling. You can't fuck it up live. Well you can fuck up the switch and camera selection but the acts get to breathe for the first time this year.
  24. djenkin8 Full Member

SOOOO,you didn't hear the bit where Howard thought it was bullsh*t that the winner would get the million dollars????Someboday had to prove (ON AIR)to Howard that the contestant got 1 million..And the "Truth" even with the payable options the contestant still gets 1 million...This is America where you have to pay taxes on everything.
