An open letter to the New York Mets

    Dear New York Mets,

All good things must come to an end, and we all know that nothing lasts forever. We met in the spring of 1986 when I was a young lad, seven years young, and you were the hottest thing I ever saw on grass and dirt. No one could touch you. You could do no wrong. By October we had gone all the way, and dreams of future October euphoria lingered on. Though a quarter century later these dreams are still only dreams you and I have maintained a solid yet sometimes frustrating fan/team relationship. When Lenny Dykstra was traded for a case of balls I was understanding. When Bobby Bonilla was allowed to drag our beloved blue pin stripes thru the mud I stood by you. When we were embarrased by the hated Yankees in the World Series I appreciated that we were there at all. When a looping curveball ended an epic NLCS without a swing I stayed optimistic for the next season. When the next season came and ended with an awful collapse to our hated rivals from Philly I came back as I did only to have it happen again. I came back year after year, but the most recent cut just went too deep. On Monday, December 5, 2011 the New York Mets lost their soul and with it my heart. Jose Reyes, the shining light in an otherwise dark, dank and dismal organization has been shunned and cast out to what will undoubtedly greener pastures for him. No more will he awaken a groggy 1a.m. Queens crowd with a 1st inning dash from home to third. No longer will the joyful sounds of JOSE JOSE JOSE fill the mid summer night's air in NYC. No longer will faithful Mets fans who have held on for so long , so paitiently, so forgivingly, and so passionately have anything left to keep them holding on anymore. Jose Reyes is gone, and with him I will leave as well. It is not the lack of winning, but the lack of hope. Jose gave us that hope, and that hope is no more. Jose Reyes, you deserve all you have coming to you even if those you gave all for don't appreciate it. Goodbye and good luck to the New York Mets, for luck is all you can now hope for.

    Sincerely,
A former dedicated and loyal Mets fan

What are you going to do start rooting for another team?....:supergay:
  4. SORRY BOFF Full Member

I'll catch some good match ups. Yanks/Sox, Cards/Cubs, playoffs, but my rooting days in baseball are over. Right now the sight of blue and orange makes me physically ill.

I never looked at the Mets the same after the first collapse. Didn't even watch a game last year (partly due to living in Europe now) But fuck the Mets, maybe when Wilpon sells the team I'll watch again

You can hope in one hand and shit in the other and see which one gets filled first.

I love how fans get outraged when stuff like this happens. How do you think Royals or Pirates fans feel when they lose players in free agency?
  8. bigben07 Full Member

ive been a lifelong pirate fan and i can still remember sid fucking bream who was slow as hell score the game winning run in the 92 nlcs i was in 6th grade then now im 31 fucking years old and the pirates havent sniffed a pennant since then and i dont anticipate a pennant for a while. this summer was fun until the epic collapse wich most pirates felt was coming just a matter of when. and to answer the question we know the pirates have no chance in hell of keeping thier free agents

Ive been a Mets fan my whole life. I was born in '81, so im a little young to really remember the '86 squad. I remember the 90's....the Mets were horrible the entire time i was a kid. When i was young, i would watch every game. I would get angry if they had a day game when i was in school or if a game wasnt televised. Even in 1993(i think) when they lost over 100 games, i watched every game i could, until the season was over. Now obviously, being 30 years old, i have a little more responsibility. I am married with a 4 month old baby, i work 55-60 hours a week, and i miss some games. But i try to watch as many as i can. I might lose interest the last few weeks of the season when the Mets are out of it and NFL and College Basketball talk starts up, so i can understand when people say they arent going to watch or miss some games.

But when someone like the OP says they are no longer a fan, and then sign the thing "a former loyal and dedicated fan" i call bullshit on that. The fact is, if they Mets are back in the playoff picture 3, 4, 5 years from now, he'll be there acting like he is the Mets best fan.

In all honesty, guys like him are the worst fans. If the Mets just signed a shitty contract to get Reyes back, he would be happy. Happy in mediocrity. Because he has "hope". Fuck hope. Ill sacrifice this season and the next to rebuild if it means Sandy Alderson is retooling this team to be better long term. What the fuck is Reyes going to do? Lead them to 77 wins again? Fucking awesome. Finally Alderson is doing what Minaya didnt have the balls to do, blow this shit show up.

Minaya patched this team up trying to keep fans happy by making terrible deals and signing Castillo, Santana, Bay, and Oliver Perez, and douchebags actually wanted the Mets to sign Reyes for 6 years. If any of those fans want to leave, Go for it.

Wilpon is a shithead, and i would want him out. And admittedly, most of what Sandy is doing is because of the new payroll constraints. But that doesnt mean it didnt need to be done.

this is NY. the NL's number 1 payroll. New stadium. Got their own tv network. This is an embarrassment. No comparison to teams who cant afford to be competitive.
  15. MOAK Full Member

    EXACTLY. well said.

boo fucking hoo met fans. it sucks, but they didn't win shit with reyes.

save the money. spend it in the draft and international scouting (where they got reyes in the first place). build a fucking organization. theyre better off than spending 20 million and just winning an extra 7 games of the year due to reyes. their only mistake was not trading him last year.
  16. MOAK Full Member

thats the point strapon boy. they've averaged $134 mill the past 5 years on payroll, far above the marlins, nats, braves, and phills and managed to win nothing. they've spent more than any other national league team the past 15 years as well - and by a huge amount (only the cubs are close). and what has that won them? nothing.

they're not competing with the big markets in the american league so they've spent plenty. they just don't have competent management and owners. it is what it is.

and stop with this "this is ny" shit....who fucking cares? they literally don't have a third of the revenue as the yankees and they don't solely own their own network like the redsox (take the strapon out of your ass and read up - time warner/nbc own a large part of it too).

mets fans can be such crybabies. suck it up and rebuild the right way. u weren't gonna win with reyes either way.

I'm sick of the Mets losing every year so a shakeup is needed, Reyes and Pagan gone? so be it, let's see what happens with Tejada at short, and now with Ramon Ramirez, Jon Rauch, Andres Torres and Francisco added lets just see what happens, can't get any worse right?
  18. SORRY BOFF Full Member

Your missing the point. At the end end of the day the Mets have decided that they don't matter, and that's what's at the heart of this for me. Thru all the years of losing at least you could say management tried. Bad as some of their signings were they did their best to stay relevant and competetive. Last year as bad as it got you still had one of the premier players in the game young enough to build around. The one thing they had going for them. A guy who could at least give the fanbase a reason to watch, come to games, and think positively that good things could happen on the field even if playoffs aren't realistic. But maybe they can't keep him. Could probably get some decent young talent for the best shortstop in the game dontcha think. Good way to start that rebuilding plan. huh? And how does Sandy's master plan begin to take effect? By not getting jack for the guy when they knew damn well they would never come close to his market value after the season. Tell me how in the hell anyone thinks the Mets are in any competitive position for the next 3-4 years with this type of thinking. The only plan here seems to be to slowly drag the payroll down, and hope they catch lightning in a bottle with some hot new draft picks 5 years from now, hope they win early and get rid of them before a big contract. That shit doesn't work in NY. Like you said, you don't remember 86, and you sound comfortable loosing. Well the next few years will be right up your alley. The difference this time is that it will be by choice, and I cannot accept that. Yes I was loyal and dedicated fan. I've never bandwagoned or rooted for anyone else. I listened to Bob Murphy call the names of Ryan Thompson , Butch Davis, Rico Brogna, and a slew of other dissapointments. I defended every shitty move to pompous Yankee fans. This move speaks for itself. I'ts a big FU, so F them.

Case and point. Sandy's plan is falling into place. Strip the team of any sign of talent. Keep competing off for as long as possible. Why not just call up the entire AAA squad and call them the 2012 New York Mets.
  21. Gindaloonatic Full Member

he's not going anywhere, its horseshit.
  22. fathead3381 Full Member

So the Mets have admitted this roster fucking blows, and needs to be blown up, and so you are done being a fan?

What they should do is overpay for Reyes to keep a few more asses in the seats knowing that they have no chance to win anything?

And because they are in NY, they have to rebuild only by making blockbuster trades, and signing 100 million dollar deals, not by building a team from the ground up?
