FIU dismisses Isiah Thomas as men's basketball coach

Isiah Thomas, who came to FIU in 2009 amid much fanfare, was let go Friday as coach after a 26-65 record in three seasons.

Former NBA star Isiah Thomas, the most ballyhooed coaching hire in Florida International University history, was fired as men’s basketball coach on Friday, more than a month after completing an 8-21 season, his third losing season in as many years with the school.
"I want to thank Isiah Thomas for his three years at FIU,” FIU executive director of sports entertainment Pete Garcia said in a statement. "However, we have decided to take the program in a different direction."
Garcia did not elaborate, and wasn't immediately available for additional comment. FIU said it immediately will begin a national search for a replacement.
FIU went 7-25 and 11-19 in his first two seasons. He leaves the Panthers with a record of 26-65.
Thomas could not immediately be reached for comment, but he told The Miami Herald two weeks ago that Garcia had given him his full support, and he definitely planned to return next season.
"Pete’s been great," Thomas said, reminding that he did not accept a salary in his first season. "I’m happy. I’m excited. We’re building a nice program. [Indiana coach] Tom Crean has been helping me a lot, in terms of how long it takes.
"We’re hoping that in year four, the groundwork we’ve been laying starts to pay off. You’re not going to come to a program like this and win in a year. It normally takes four to five years. We have a good recruiting class coming in. We’re making a big difference in the community."

It's not just going to be rumors. Dolan LOVES him.

    Awesome quote from Isiah...

"This is the most surprising thing that has happened to me in basketball," Thomas said. "I never been fired before for basketball reasons. This is the first time.
"When I was in Toronto, I was trying to buy a team and I left. When I was in Indiana, Larry Bird told me that he liked what I was doing but he was closer to Rick Carlisle. The whole thing in New York was crazy. This is the first time someone told me that I was being fired for basketball reasons."

yeah that's the problem isn't it. especially since Grunwald is an "interim" GM

Pretty sure trading Nene and two 1st round (top 10) picks for Eddy Curry and his heart condition is a basketball reason to be fired!

According to sources, Dolan isn’t ready to name Thomas to a formal Knicks position. The Post reported last summer the Knicks owner still maintains a friendship with Thomas but was disappointed his compadre spoke publicly about wanting Donnie Walsh’s position and believed he was secretly lobbying with select media members.
That’s not Dolan’s style. Dolan’s lieutenants, including Garden head honcho Hank Ratner and Garden president Scott O’Neill, have convinced Dolan hiring Thomas in an official capacity isn’t good business…During the press conference following the acquisition of Carmelo Anthony, Dolan went well out of his way to say Thomas wasn’t involved in trade negotiations. Dolan was irritated Thomas gave an impression he had influence on the deal during a Miami radio interview. Dolan had never been afraid to toot Thomas’ horn publicly, so it was clear something was up between them.
