Artie Lange: Last day on Stern Show was "Horrifying"

Discussion in 'Howard Stern' started by Bill Cosby, Apr 3, 2012.

Despite what he says on the air Howard absolutely blamed himself for Artie's suicide attempt. And Artie wanted him to. The way things like this usually go is at first the intended target feels very guilty which was the case with Howard and then they wind up resenting the person, which was also the case. Remember a few months after the attempt Howard said "What's with these people who TRY to commit suicide? Just do it if you're gonna do it". Pretty harsh stuff.

I think Howard has come to terms what what happened- I don't think he's angry anymore but I also don't think he wants to deal with any aspect of it again. I think if Artie were clean for a few years there is a chance he'd come back in the final weeks of the current contract, but with Artie still fucked up I don't even see that happening.

How is everyone so sure that Artie is off the wagon? I don't listen to sports talk, so I haven't heard his new show.

anyone have a link to that show.? would love to hear it.

I don't remember Artie ever asking to go home early.

If he had, Howard would have sent him home.

Having listened to Artie every day for 9 years it's obvious to me when he's using. I'm sure of it and the fact that he was 45 minutes late for the show confirms it I think.

I've listened to Artie every day he was on the Stern Show, and everyday on Nick and Artie. Yes, he was late last night. No, he is not using. When he was late on the Stern show you could tell he was off. Last night he was on his A game as soon as he stepped in the studio.

Tim Sabean tried to get his ass out early by leaving a trail of Devil Dogs towards the exit but it didn't work.
Artie leaves on his own time, dammit. Salut!

Obviously it's all speculation one way or the other, but showing up 45 minutes late to a live radio show, that starts at 10 in the evening, isn't a good sign.

OK I see your point.I'm only going by the honest answer he gave that Artie would be back on the show and it'll be a few years before he could let him back in.And I'm only going by it taking Jackie YEARS and YEARS and Pat Cooper YEARS to come back on the show after trashing Howard. They all love Howard(Not Pat). And they all come back...But I see your point.

You'll know what I mean by "passive-aggressively asking" to be sent home if you think about it for a second or two, I'm sure...

Ask Cabbie, Chauncy and Stuttering John how well that turns out.

Anybody know the exact date of Artie's last Howard Stern Show? I would like to listen to it again.
  17. yankran Full Member

Could not agree more - Howard knows he enabled Artie for years, part of reason he is so undercomfortable with the subject is deep guilt he feel over it and fact he realized the and his program were part of problem.

This is where you run into trouble with your posts. How do you know Howard was giving an honest answer to that caller? No one will know that until Artie either comes back on the show or Howard retires without having him on. Howard seemed sincere when he said he'd never get married again, when he said they'd only break on Sirius to use the restroom and when he said Nick Cannon was "horrible and an embarrassment on AGT".

And then you continue with "and they all come back" - what about Billy West, Stuttering John, Seinfeld, Cabbie and EEO.

Dude, that was just fucking inspired. You encapsulated the last few years of the show in one short rant. Dead on!

What did happen to Cabbie after he got out of the clink (besides manning a few glory holes)? Good point!

That's all fine but what you're conveniently leaving out is the obvious that Howard EMPOWERED if not encouraged Artie for theatre of the mind drama reality TV/radio to be the addict losers loser he was on the show. It filled up hours and hours and show after show of schadenfreude discussion for HOWARD to reap the rewards of.

A normal Artie is a boring HOWARD STERN SHOW Artie. And Artie knew this and played the part till it broke him and nearly killed him. I'm sure part of his suicide attempt had him reflecting on that exact notion. "WHAT AM I EXACTLY...EVERYONE'S FAT ADDICT PUNCHLINE....THIS IS WHAT I GOT INTO SHOWBIZ FOR??"

Now Howard gets to hit the eject seat button away from it all and act like the usual Nassau County Jewish victim he always paints himself as. As if he's not at least 50% to blame for Artie's breakdown to begin with. You really think ARTIE'S behavior is the main culprit here?

And do you HONESTLY believe anything bad is going to happen to ANYONE if Artie came on in studio as a guest? Do you really think Artie is a threat to him or the pussy HSS staff if he came on as a guest? Do you REALLY buy Howard's bullshit martyr excuse here?

What I think is moot, though I don't disagree with your point.

I responded about what Howard thinks by listening to both his words and patterns of behavior, which includes his neurotic, self-serving, double-standard, fearful notions. His freaked out feelings to Arite's drama seems to over-ride a healthy impulse to reach out to Artie on a personal level, to his "bro".

Also, Howard has never done an on-air 'mea culpa' about using anyone for The Show.

I don't like this term "Enabler." Howard chose to turn a blind eye to Artie's drug taking, but if he fired him, he would have hurt the show and ruined Artie's show business career--that's a tough decision to make. Was firing Artie going to make him clean?

It's easy to judge Howard, but he's the adult in the room. Is he a hypocrite because he didn't come on the air and say Artie tried to commit suicide right after it happened? Should he have said that Artie was not welcomed back while Artie was in a mental ward? Should he say Artie is not funny and not welcomed back when he's trying to get back into show business?
  24. mocaw Full Member

But he never would have said that. No-one kissed Howard and Robin's asses more than Artie did.
