My guess is that we are burning through a huge amount of ammo in a couple of wars. And probably not a good idea to invest in a factory when the demand is falling. But hey if ammunition coding system starts their nonsense again it could be a good idea. And my guess is that they will. They wanna make money and god knows they have been spending it on politicians.

It's required by law they ask for your license. Depending on what state the vendor is located in, they will have to ask for a copy of your driver's license or a signed statement from you stating that you are over 18 and are not restricted from buying ammunition is any way. Its been like that for many years. No big deal.


As for the ammo shortage. With people buying a couple extra BILLION rounds a year at the same time the military just ordered a few BILLION rounds at a very attractive price point for ammunition makers, a lot of production went toward the military contract and you have your shortage. Couple that with the commodities price jump last year and China hoarding whatever copper and lead they could get their hands on and we had the price increases as well. A perfect storm for trouble with ammo supplies. Hopefully the worst is over.

A bottle-neck also occurred with primer production. No primer to fire the bullet and no bullet... Most excess primer production went to the military contract but I believe that has been filled so they could start start producing ammo for the civilian sector in greater numbers now. Hand-loaders have had a hell of a time finding primers the last few months and when they did find them, they were priced sky-high.
