DID HOWARD GET NBC TO RENEW WHITNEY'S SHOW?

He is going to deny it but on the show he joked "I'll talk to the guys at NBC" and now much to the shock of all Hollywood, Whitney Cumming's sucky show has gotten a renewal. AGT will be the talk of the sumer and Howard is set to become a force at NBC, so they could not cancel his girl's show. (Also, Sarah Silverman's show went nowhere what a shock!)

For my money Whitney's better than the show. The co-lead is a lox and there is no chemistry between the two of them. They should just her be who her fans loved: hot chick with a foul mouth.

Hat's off to you Howard, you got pull, man. Let's hope the next season is actually watchable.

How exactly do you think Howard got Whitney's show renewed? And according to some here on SFN Howard doesn't have any power nor is he relevant. The man has a network Tv show and is on every billboard in NY but some think he's irrelevant.

I respectfully disagree with your assessment and agree with NBC's decision to renew the show for a second season. In fact, I sent a message to NBC encouraging them to do so.

I agree that first few episodes of the show were painful to watch...enough so that I quit watching. However, when Whitney asked HSS listeners to give the show a second chance, I did so. I watched the last 7-8 shows through On Demand and found the show not only much improved but also with potential for growth. That is the key point in all of this. Does the show have the potential to grow an audience, and I believe it does.

There are one or two secondary characters that I would not keep because I found them to be more caricatures than living breathing INTERESTING characters, but, even if they remain, it presents a challenge to the show's head writer to dig in deeper to see if there is something to the character than what was shown in the first season.

I believe Whitney's performances improved steadily and her chemistry with her leading man is there. Whitney's character works best when she's being a brat (more than a bitch), and the boyfriend needs to be that strong presence who also is funny but defers to her in the scene. That type of character was exemplified masterfully by Ricky Ricardo and Dan Conners (Roseanne) among others.

There definitely was a better repartee between them, which is central to a good comedy.
If the writers can build on that, the viewers will become invested in the couple, their lives on the show and their future together.

There really are not that many good comedies any more (largely because there are so few good comedy writers). The risk will be minimal to NBC (already heavily publicized, can be yanked quickly if it doesn't catch on early 0n), so those are my arguments for giving the show another shot....for what it's worth.

I don't know how you can disagree with me because I am asking a question. We may never know. Even if he did put in a good word for Whitney, Howard would never admit it because he does not like to make a big deal out of helping other people sometimes.

NBC had every reason to cancel this misbegotten show and in truth, if Sarah Silverman's and Roseanne's shows had turned out better they would have. In the end Whitney is the best of the shit they have. Still, there are people there who hate the show and don't like her much either. In this light, Howard's favor could have meant everything even if he didn't intercede himself. He is respected there and rightly so.

If you recall Whitney lost the comedy contest to April Macie. Why then had Whitney become the favorite daughter of the HSS? Well, Whitney did roasts and Howard loves rost humor. Also, Whitney is rail skinny and ass-kissy. Two things Howard likes in women (don't we all?) It's no coincidence that Hollywood put her on its radar. They all listen to Howard religiously then deny it. Howard made Whitney. Why would he let her fail if he could help? It would be like HE was failing.

Here the HPOA that won the contest. Hey Howard, hook her up.

Amanda Peet's show got the axe, as did Chelsea Handler's show on network tv.
Howard has never been more relevant. Take that, Stern whine network.

Howard is the reason why the sun goes up and down each day. Don't dare to question his power or he might not let the sun go up tomorrow.

The show only got a 13 episode (i.e., not "full season") pick up. Not exactly a vote of confidence. I watched when it first came on - neither fun, nor funny, but Whitney's last interview on the show was amazing (esp. re: her drug addicted sister and what WC went through to help her). I'm a fan.

Dean...I then respectfully apologize for misreading the intent of your thread. Comedy, sadly, will never be what it once was. In its infancy through its peak years, television writers mostly came out of theater, where they learned to structure a scene and a joke by learning from the masters before them and sometimes failing but learning from those no-profile experiences.

Both television and film scripts suffer greatly from the loss of these training grounds.

Howard's influence in these areas is minimal imo...and you are right, Dean, when you cite desperation as a driving force behind many network decision.

It's almost like being at a bar at 1:30 a.m. and desiring to get laid...boy you'd love to find an 9 or an 8...but you need to fuck, so you'll settle for a 6...

For the record, I believe Whitney's show was at first season's end, a 7 with the potential to be an 8. I hope that happens for her for I see no reason to wish against someone else's success.

Seriously guys..I mean really...if Howard could get Whitneys show renewed..then why is his wife ( who doesn't want to be an actress) doing some dumb show on whatever channel that is she is on...

I actually liked the show a lot. First one or two were a bit rough but I ended up looking forward to it. Glad it's coming back. If Howard had something to do with it's renewal good for him.

I am intrigued that Howard is soooo supportive of these marginal female comics. Whitney has never been funny ONCE!:timeout:

I liked the show from the beginning, it actually got weak after about 4 episodes and then it picked up again. I don't know about the whole dude turns gay out of nowhere and where they will take that. I vote renew!! I'm actually upset about the 13 episode deal. I guess if it's good, they will order more.

TV by the Numbers had it being renewed all along, fucking conspiracy nutjobs

    Because Whitney has talent

Definitely agree with you that a shallow talent pool has hurt TV and Film.

I didn't like Whitney's show but I do like her. I think she has some of those bad writers you spoke of. Hope she can make a recovery next season.;)

Wow that is just insane, You really think Howard would waste his time to beg NBC not to cancel Whitney?
Howard does not give a shit, in fact he gets happy when people fail. Howard rules

I suspect shenanigans. That show is unwatchable. It's not funny. You can almost feel the effort being made to crobar the jokes that worked in her stand-up into the dialogue of the show.
  23. jerrybobphil Full Member

Wow what a telling statement about how empty NBC is of ideas. A terrible show that got terrible ratings that doesn't deserve a second chance but got one anyway. I remember the old days when NBC was king, sad news for that shitty network.
