Wife just bought me the Sportster Replay for my birthday yesterday. The store told her that by Christmas, there will be a new Sportster? model that records/timeshifts for 5 hours! That's what I'd rather get... and it's only a few weeks away...

    Anyone else hear of this??

I'm also torn over which subscription to get. Since 'Lifetime' only means receiver appliance life, what happens if I upgrade receivers? Will I have to pay again for another subscription? Can I transfer the 'Lifetime' subscription from the first (and deactivate that one) to the newer receiver?

There isn't going to be a new Sportster by Christmas - SIRIUS usually sends out promotional information about new receivers to SIRIUS sites & stores that carry SIRIUS products a month or so before they're released. The only new products coming out soon are:
-Streamer Replay (which is basically the Sportster Replay but in black)
-Streamer GTR (which is basically the Starmate Replay but in a dark gray/black color)
-Xact Replay (which is basically the Starmate Replay but made by Xact not Directed Electronics)
-Audiovox SIRCMB5 (which is basically the Starmate Replay but a little different shape/color/screen color/...)

-If you want to upgrade your receiver meaning get a new receiver I think you can switch the lifetime over to a new receiver like 2-4 times (at least that's what I heard). If you want to upgrade meaning you want to add an additional receiver you'd just have to pay the $500 once and then pay the $6.99 a month or whatever for the second receiver.

Thanks, DM! I wonder what the salesman was talking about, then? Maybe one of those you listed. She bought it in a Radio Shack, and the guy just advised her that this 5-hr recordable one will be out by the holidays.

Frankly, while the 44-min recording/shift time is practically useless to me, it might not matter. I'd love to record the whole Show for playback after work, but if Howard repeats the broadcast, it's moot.

This is a great thread, as most of yours always are! Thanks for all the info. You always help out your clueless SFN brothers! Much appreciated!

Maybe he was talking about the S50 which can record up to 50 hours of SIRIUS content.

Please read if you want an S50. This model is a poor choice for an MP3 player. The copyright restrictions limit the tapeable shows to 20. You must delete shows before taping more. The time you can tape is limited (2 hour blocks). Music can not be taped. Also, the space on the player is limited compared to a Creative Zen or Ipod.
If you want to tape shows read up on taping to a computer and using an MP3 player with no copyright issues (RIAA has limited the Sirius s50). Personally, I plug my Sirius into my Compaq Presario and use a program called Audio Cleaning Lab to use timed recordings. The time per MP3 recording is unlimited per file. I can place a whole Stern Show in one file. I also tape the following Sirius shows: BBC 1 Essential Collection, Sirius 1 Countdown, Blender Countdown, and Howard100 News. Why tape 25 shows to an S50 when a Creative Zen 60GB (My player) or Ipod 60GB holds 50,000 hrs of mp3s. :D

You can tape up to 20 back to back two hour shows blocks, not 25 1 hour blocks.

Music can be taped by leaving the S50 on the channels you want to listen to. It automatically starts recording live music channels you're listening to for the 3 most listened to channels. If you want some Hard Attack on your S50, turn to Hard Attack and let it start recording as much as you want it to, then turn to another channel you want, like Octane - record as much as you want (just by leaving it on that channel). Then if you want to fill it up with another channel like Faction, turn to that channel and let it record some of that channel by just leaving it on that channel. Or you could just fill your S50 with just a shit load of just one channel. It's all up to you.
It's super simple and is nice because you just have to turn it to the channel you want to record, no need to tell it to record. Then when you're listening to the recorded music you can 'love' songs to save them to your S50 so you can listen to them whenever you want.

I have had SIRIUS since the summer with the Sporster Replay (gave it to my mom now), and I must say that I really love the S50. I thought I would be pissed off about the missing ability to schedule music channels but the way they worked it out is really nice - I like how I don't have to tell it to record, I just turn to a music channel I want and leave it there and it fills up my S50 with music for me to listen to whenever I want.

    Any problem taping Howard's shows?

I just got my S50 and still haven't hooked it up. Still waiting for the home dock. Is there going to be any problem taping Howard's show due to copyright issues? The guy at Sirius called me back and said that there "probably won't be". I know that there are people now having difficulty. Does anyone here have an answer? Also, if I went to Radio Shack and got a AC/DC adapter do you just stick the car antenna out of a window? Thanks for your time....I am a real newbie with this.

Re: Any problem taping Howard's shows?

    Nice!

No, I seriously doubt that there will be any problems recording the show. You can currently record Howard 100 News and any other show that's on the channel, and Howard himself said he has the S50 and uses it to record/listen to shows on his channel.

I had an extra home antenna so I just used it, but my friend just put a $.40 piece of sheet metal out the window with the car antenna on it to get reception 'til he gets his home kit. Circuit City currently has the home kits available online, so if you need a home kit now you could order one on their site.

I recieved an email request to show how to record Howard Stern as MP3 Files as compared to using an S50, an Ipod or Creative Nomad may be used as storage for Mp3 Files, "Blumpkin King,

For Taping the Howard Strern 100 channel, I use a Sanyo Sirius Reciever that uses fm broadcast around my house. I turn my radio (RCA Surround Sound Reciever from Radio Shack) on to the chosen recieve station. My stereo has output ports that are rca jacks so I bought an inexpensive wire from Walmart that had rca plugs on one side and a minijack port (headphone jack) on the other http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=3579191. One end of the wire goes from the stereo output port labled tape (deck) L R. Then I plug the mini port into my computer mike port (Compaq Presario Notebook). Then I use a piece of software I got from Comp USA called Audio Cleaning Lab from Magix. This software allows conversion of Records, Tapes and and makes recordings from the mike port. The software allows conversion to CDR-RW, DVDR-RW or MP3 (I have been using MP3 output for Howard Stern. I use CDR for Records and Tapes. Today, I recieved a coupon for it http://site.magix.net/index.php?21391. Then I tell the program to start taping and stop taping at a certain time. I must leave my Sanyo and stereo on the correct channels with volume turned down. My Computer records while I am at work. Then, I edit out comercials or unwanted content by cutting from the wave graphic readout. Then I Click MP3 output and save the file as MP3 and transfer to my MP3 player. I use a Creative Zen Xtra as an MP3 Player I got from J & R Music world on Amazon.com in 2003. My System Snapshot on my Creative says it has 9292 tracks 1302 Albums 51 GB used and 9 GB free (9292 hours of music and radio shows stored and backed up on a hard drive and DVD Data Discs). FYI I tape shows like BBC ch 11 Essential Selection, Sirius Hits 1 Countdown, Maxim Blender Countdown, in addition to Howard Stern. If Howard were available via Sirius Player http://mpcache.sirius.com/servlet/MediaPlayer?activity=expand&streamNumber=& I could record by tuning my Compaq Laptop to the Sirius radio channel and using the same procedure above, but the wire I use has a miniport plug on each end. One end goes into the mike port the other goes into the headphones jack of my Computer.

    Take it easy,

    Howard

I saw your post to the sirius board. I was wondering if you could please explain exactly how you record to your ipod from the sirius receiver. I was going to buy a s50 unitl I read your helpful post. I just don't know how to go about getting started and which reciever to get that would be best for this. I really want to basically copy your system. It seems like the best way for me to be able to listen to the whole show. Thank you very much. Greg

Just wanted to thank you for the in depth way that you record. Very helpful. What do others do?? I would love to hear how.

Could one use that software and Wal-Mart wire to convert vinyl records to mp3?
  13. iam72hrstv Full Member

Converting vinyl to MP3 is one of the main aplications. For my Wife's birthday I converted her 100 records and 200 singles to MP3 and transfered them to her MP3 player. The program cleans tape hiss, record pops and cracklles and adds stereo seperation for analog mono recordings.

Hi, can anyone with the home kit for the starmate st2 tell me how to attach the unit to the cradle? I have two units in the house and both seem to be missing a piece that enables the unit to attach to the bracket.
    Any help is appreciated. Thanks
  18. Blumpkin King Full Member

If you look at the back of the box of the home kit it shows you a pic. Lay the metal peice so that the longest end is sitting flat. There are two pieces at the bottom, about a 1/2" off the ground, and you slip the starmate into those . The starmate has an little inlet between the front and back of the unit. put the bottom pieces in that inlet and move the unit a little forward. The top will clip in. Hard to explain, but hopefully this helps. It took me a couple of minutes as well because it is not explained well. I used the pics on the back of the home kit package to figure it out.

    Good luck

    re: sirius one

I have had this unit for a couple of weeks and have to say i am very impressed with it. For those that do have it, or are thinking about purchasing it, here is an e-mail i got from sirius regarding a home
    kit:

"Thanks for contacting Customer Care. We will be happy to help. The
SIRIUS 1 home kit will be out at the end of the month. There are none
that are compatible with this radio."

If a senior member of the board could post this as a new thread, people may like to know that the kit is coming. I , as a junior membor, cannot creat a thread.

Why don't you get those idiots at Sirius to be honest with "boombox" customers. Aquiring siginal is getting very old now, especially when it happens during Howards show. If I can receive a siginal uninterupted in my car, even in the car wash there is no reason that plastic piece of crap they call an antenna that I have mounted in more places than Hugh Hefner can't work!
  23. mraswyp Probationary Member

Sirius radio overcharged me 50 dollars when I signed up for a lifetime subscription. I have called 8 times and sent email trying to get my money back but for some reason they just won't so it. What is their problem? I signed up to listen to Howard everyday but am getting so pissed I may have contact my credit card company and just cancel the whole thing. It's not just the 50 bucks but I feel ripped off.
  24. stevecvg Full Member

Do yourself a favor and get an outdoor antenna.

I have on of these mounted on the side of my house. I've NEVER had anything less than 100% signal strength since it was installed.

So if all I wanted to do was listen in the car, and then tape the rest of the show in my office via a cassette boombox, and money was an issue, what would you recommend I get? Thanks and apologies in advance if this question has already been answered.
