I-Pod and I-Tunes Question?

I've had a few different i-pods for years now. My 80 gig. Classic has had about a dozen of those digital DVD movies as well as many music videos and cartoon movies for my kids. I've had no problems for the few years I've owned it, until yesterday. ALL of the movies and videos that I converted and loaded have vanished from the i-Pod an hour after syncing. So when I opened i-Tunes to re-sync, they were gone there too except for the digital rips. (the ones you get when you buy blurays)

That pissed me off to say the least! Is this a new policy from Apple? Did they send a kill command that wiped my i-Tunes?

I had planned to buy the new i-pad this summer, I've changed my mind! There is no way that 2 dozen movies and videos can just disappear on their own!
