Almost barfed when I went down on a chick Sunday, gagged.

In about 6hrs I had a horrible sore throat, fever. Didn't have strep. If I wasn't so drunk I would have done the smell test.

Why can't chicks keep it clean?

you can get all types of shit. There is a lawsuit here in nyc..about a cop who had coke in his system and was fired from his job. He said he doesn't do drugs, but he may have gotten it from going down on his girl who was a cokehead. Creepy!

My boyfriend of 6 years says he gets a sore throat after each time he performs cunnilingus on me. He says it's almost right after, lasts for about 2-3 days. We are monogamous, neither of us has any STD's & I do not have any vaginal infections. What could be causing it & what can be done to prevent it? Is it a hygienic issue?

As I have said before, I am an expert in STDs and other infections, not a sex therapist. I don't think I can help much, except to reassure you that I'm sure it's not an STD or any other infection. No infection can cause sore throat immediately after exposure. Over 30 years ago, research studies showed that persons who performed oral sex--mostly fellatio but also cunnilingus--had sore throats more often than expected by chance, but the symptoms were not generally associated with any known infection.

I don't think there has been any research on this since then, so the rest of my comments are speculative. But three possibilities come to mind. First, maybe chemical irritation or allergy due to hygienic products or perhaps just to a partner's genital secretions. Allergy to partners' genital secretions is known to occur but is extremely rare, and usually would be associated with itching, swelling, or facial rash, not just sore throat. Second, muscular pain. Body aches can happen in response to positions or activities that don't seem to be especially stressful, but that in fact are associated with unconscious tensing of the muscles involved. Perhaps during cunnilingus your boyfriend is unconsiously tightening up muscles around the throat. Third, perhaps it is psychogenic--by which I don't mean anybody has any important mental health problem. This idea may be closely related to the second--i.e., muscle spasm may be the way a psychological issue works to cause discomfort.

I don't have any useful suggestions for prevention, except to consider consulting a sex therapist. In any case, I am sure there is no important health issue or hygienic problem.

I enjoy performing cunnilingus on my girlfriend, and every so often, I get a sore throat. My question is, is it all right to perform cunnilingus on my girlfriend if I have a sore throat? Or is there a chance that whatever causing my throat discomfort could cause her trouble as well? Can the “giver” of oral sex pass along sore throat germs to the “receiver”?

Dear Sore throat,

Although there are many things that can be transmitted directly through unprotected oral sex, your sore throat is probably not one of them. Most sore throats are caused by viruses like the common cold or flu. These germs get into your body via the nose or mouth, so it's safe to say that your partner's vagina cannot "catch a cold" if you go down on her when you have a sore throat. You can pass along your sore throat germs by kissing, touching, or holding her close to you during sexual activity though. Just to be safe, you might want to keep your face away from hers until your sore throat goes away.

There is also a possibility that your sore throat might be caused by an STI if your partner has one and you don't use a barrier such as a condom or dental dam. For example, performing oral sex on a partner who is infected with gonorrhea can lead to gonorrhea of the throat. A sore throat is a common sign of an oral STI, along with tonsillitis, oral lesions, or cold sores. If you find that you are experiencing these symptoms regularly after performing oral sex, you may want to see your health care provider for testing and treatment. Holy shit. I had no idea it could be THAT bad. I'm feeling better now, but I'm going to get some antibiotics anyway. I know this chick has poor hygiene, she has an odor from time to time...and I've bought her bath gel but she just can't take a hint. I'm eaten her out before though and it wasn't THAT bad. Her hygiene has nothing to do with contracting an HPV infection. The more sex partners she is exposed to the greater chance that she has at one time been exposed to the virus. Some researcher's estimate that approx. 50% of women have contracted the virus during their sexually active years.
