I think you're underestimating the impact it has on the teen set- and how these events are seen by your peers. My stepson's Bar Mitzvah (12 years ago) cost many multiples of what JH spent. It did help that his dad was worth millions. It was enjoyed by 150 kids, and they talked about it for the longest time. Each kid took home an insane gift basket too- it was a basketball theme. Each kid got to take home a courtside padded team chair, embroidered, and a custom-painted trash can painted to look like a basketball net- which held the party favors inside, including gift certificates, a digital camera, an official NBA basketball and a lot more.

So it's fair to say that it is for both the parents and the kids- as EVERYBODY enjoys the event- each for their own reason. Parents get to show off, and kids get to have an amazing party. I still remember mine even though it was a long time ago. I had tons of fucking fun, and I even got some titty. Toby. She had bangs.
