The cells in the new Halden prison have tiled bathrooms, flat screen TV and a window without bars.

All of the prison, which has total capacity for 251 inmates, will be operational from 1
    april.
April. There is great need for care places. Accelerated opening of Halden prison takes the pressure and give us a breathing space to resolve custody challenges in Eastern Norway, "said Justice Minister Knut Storberget.

    High standard

Halden Prison has cost 200 million$ to build, and has received criticism for its delicious cells with tiled bathrooms, soft colors, flat screens and windows without bars. Each cell is 12 square meters large, with a 2 square meters bathroom.
    .
The walls of the prison has been painted and decorated for 1,1 million dollars.

State Secretary in the Ministry of Justice Terje Moland Pedersen points out to Nettavisen that there is deprivation of liberty - that sit locked in the cell from 20.00 to 08.00 every night every morning - that is the punishment - not low quality of prison.

    - We want to make criminal the implementation of a way that we can prevent relapse, with good building quality and good conditions, "says Moland Pedersen.

He thinks it is bad that people question the quality of prison, and believes no one could imagine living in Halden prison voluntarily

    - We use the knowledge and materials we have in 2010. Any choice of materials is done in terms of hygiene, cleanliness and that the prison should be wear strong, "he says.

In addition, offers schooling in prison with the possibility of taking a trade certificate and good opportunities for activities both indoors and outdoors. Among the offerings is an exercise room, gymnasium, several types of workshops, a library, recording studio and laboratory.

Each division consists of 10-12 cells and a large common area with a cozy kitchen and living room area with TV.

As a developer Statsbygg writes in its brochure about Halden Prison: "Had it not been for the wall which runs around the area, this could just as easily been a college, a nursing home or other institution."

Halden Prison is built on a 300 acre on Torpum in Halden
    .
The total building stock is 27,500 square feet, and the 251 prisoners to be guarded by around 350 employees.

You'd say that in a thread about baking pies.

If those pies required my tax dollars to make them, yes.

Uber Liberal approach would be to just make rape legal. Crime problem solved.

The sad facts are, that WORLDWIDE:

More blacks, more crime. So many years, so many social programs later and NOTHING has worked.
    What's the answer?

But, it is IGNORED out of political correctness.

Yep, in the US prisons are a for profit business most of the time, they just want to make more money, not turn people's lives around.

The recidivism rate is over 60% in the US, some individual prisons are close to 75%. This has to be the highest rate in the world. Evidently we are not doing something right here. I would be for building better prisons if it meant the recidivism rate went down. While they are locked up they are not contributing to society, if we have to spend a few more bucks to make them contributing members of society, I am all for that.

Because trying to fix the problem instead of purely trying to make someone as miserable as possible is a horrible idea.

Why bother to fix the problem when we can just put them away for 20 years and pay 20,000 a year for them to live in a 6x6 only to have them re-offend and end up back there again for the remainder of their life?

You never seem to hear conservatives complain about all the handouts and tax money spent on prisoners... so they don't mind welfare as long as the recipients are jailed and away from them.

This problem is easily resolved. They will ban collection and publication of all such statistics in the future. They are just coming around to this new problem, so the obvious censorship solution hasnt been thought of yet.

    "Where da white wymenz at?"

"While 65 percent of those charged with rape are classed as coming from a non-western background, this segment makes up only 14.3 percent of Oslo's population. Norwegian women were the victims in 80 percent of the cases, with 20 percent being women of coloreds background."

That's still cheaper than what is paid in California to house prisoners.

It's like living in an Ikea showroom.

ever seen an FPC its the kind of place they send bernie madoff types, its pretty fucking nice too, as far as prisons go.

its sad you can rob a few hundred dollars from a liquor store and end up in PMITA prison but rob a few hundred million and you end up in an fpc.

i dont think minor drug offenders end up in prison for the most part...if anything you would probably end up in jail for something like possession with intent even then u prob have to be a repeat offender to not be able to get out of doing time for that.

its possible that the person who raped or killed was a petty thief and our system turned him into a rabid dog.

We are already committed to doing that. Each year the prison population rises so we have to build more prisons to be in compliance with DOJ guidelines. This does not address rehabilitation this is just housing inmates.

I would say that it would be cheaper to build a prison where the recidivism rate will be lower versus keeping the status quo and locking people up for a lifetime on the govt. dime. It cost something like 20K a year to house an inmate, that gets real damn expensive when you start locking up people for a lifetime.

I am talking about the guy that does 2-5 years for burglary, drug possession and other similar crimes. Lets get that guys some education, counseling, etc... so when he gets out he is not back in 12 months. The next time he comes back he is in for 10-15 years. Shit starts getting expensive.
