gdp per capita isnt really a good measure because norway is an oil rich country with a very small population compared to us, unfortunatly i could not find a metric on material standard of living...yes consumer debt is probably higher here

so they encourge them to leave so norway can shift costs onto the spanish system for the most costly patients (the old) that is clever

breimos, regarding houses ur talking about like a dacha? a vacation cabin or something not a 2nd home right?

Norway has a higher quality of life, most of their prisons are "open door," they cost less than they do here, and they don't spend billions of dollars chasing around plants and white powder. They win.

id prefer to be working here, but id prefer to be unemployed there :jj: i agree we could take a few lessons from the nordic countries

PPP per capita is a good way to look at purchasing power, and that was what I was sourcing :)

You think Spain mind that 40.000 Norwegians take their pension with them to go live under their sun ? The nursing home that are down there are run by Norwegian municipalities or by private Norwegian firms and then hired by municipalities to take care of their residents.

or a vacation home like this.
owning a boat is also quite common. there are 300.000 insured boats and 500-700,000 total

ok, so what i suspected a dacha, they are popular in the FSU too

    why is the roof sodded
  10. dogcow Full Member

as i said per capita gdp its misleading, average wages are lower (PPP adjusted) in norway

    PPP
This purchasing power rate equalizes the purchasing power of different currencies in their home countries for a given basket of goods. Using a PPP basis is arguably more useful when comparing differences in living standards on the whole between nations because PPP takes into account the relative cost of living and the inflation rates of different countries, rather than just a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) comparison.

Is there a better way to compare purchasing power ?
  13. dogcow Full Member

i didnt dispute PPP, i said GDP per capita (even PPP adjusted) is a misleading the divergence between average wage and GDP per capita in america is a few thousand dollars, in norway wages are around $18,000 lower than GDP per capita , since unemployment is 2% the money is going somewhere...maybe norway diverts a great deal of tax money to foreign investments? maybe norwegian corporations (or government) hordes enormous amounts of cash? i dont know.

The Economist's Big Mac Index is an interesting one. It exploits the fact that most, if not all, the components of a Big Mac are sourced locally.

regarding the healthcare, even if norway pays..its to the gov's advantage to encourage them to leave for spain or similar...because its a much poorer country, the cost of care would likely be much cheaper.

it would be the equivalent of the US encourage all ederly to relocate to mexico, even if we let medicare pay for their care..the costs would be half or a third what they are here, and likely we would still be affording them the best care mexico had to offer....that would actually be very clever, because its mutually beneficial in many ways.
  16. breimos Full Member

It's GDP per capita adjusted for PPP(purchasing power). If you know of some other, better way to compare purchasing power I'd be happy to see it. How is it misleading ? is it just misleading for some countries ?
  17. breimos Full Member

It would be a difficult comparison when you take in to account how the agricultural styles of Norway is and how it's run in The US. There's very few large farms in Norway because of government policies enacted to protect small farmers.

what would be the point of comparing the price of beef ^^ luckily we don't have this nightmare food industry.
  18. Fbama247 Full Member

So your agriculture is similar to that in Japan. Yet look where they are on that index. Also, I'm not quite sure what horror that photo is supposed to convey (except stretching the page out) - it's a feed lot at an apparently large ranch. Americans have access to relatively inexpensive, quality beef.

The average wage for full time employees in Norway for 2010 will be 463.477 NOK
that's way above the gdp per capita.

    http://www.ssb.no/aarbok/tab/tab-228.html

This is average monthly wages for different age groups. Kvinner = females. The first category is women and men together.

    1$ = 5,9 NOK.

It should be OK to shop lift?

People get 5 years for shop lifting, first offense?

I dont think the pot laws are correct and I dont roll around with weed in my car.

I dont think the govt has the right to take over a 1/3 of the money I make, but I pay my taxes, makes me angry as hell. waaaaaaaaaaa

Japan has the same barren earth and harsh weather conditions that 'Norway' provides for its farmers?

Yes cows standing all day up to their knees in manure while feeding on corn mixed with antibiotics. Feedlots are rife with e coli and the meat produced there is not a good quality.

  22. dogcow Full Member

not with both adjusted for PPP . oced computes these figures

norway gdp per capita in 2007 $53,477, average wage $40,177

united states gdp per cap $45,489 avg wage $49,483

above data comes from oced website so methodology to compute PPP weight is the same i assume
