How many people are enrolled in medicare verse any private insurance company? Larger groups pay even less than smaller ones. Tough concept, I know.

No, you still don't get it I see. Insurance groups can negotiate with doctors/hospitals/providers. Medicare pays a fixed amount which congress needs to intervene and raise every year. Even after intervention, only a limited amount of providers accept a limited amount of patients which then need to be cut in with other insured or uninsured persons to make up for paltry sums that medicare pays.
On their own, these providers would never agree to these fees if everyone paid the same as medicare because there wouldn't be any way to get the subsidization back, so everyone's fees would go up.

I thought I read somewhere that fines for not buying insurance could be as low as $90 up to a maximum of $950...sounds like a good deal...we're hiring all those IRS agents to investigate whether someone owes a few hundred dollars?...sure doesn't sound cost effective to me

Me too. But I changed my party affiliation about 2005 (I think) It was the Grover Norquist takeover that did it. Any party without the freedom to do the right thing because of a stupid pledge doesn't deserve my vote. This country was founded on freedom, not pledges.
