    Naomi Klein

"The Shock Doctrine" and "No Logo" Interview

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKr_soG4DUA"]YouTube - Naomi Klein "The Shock Doctrine" & "No Logo" interview[/ame]

In-depth interview with internationally renowned author, journalist and syndicated columnist Naomi Klein on her new book “The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalismâ€. Klein is best known for her book from the year 2000, the international bestseller “No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bulliesâ€. It was called “A Movement Bible†by the New York Times referring to its incredible impact on the anti-globalization movement.

In this extraordinary interview, Klein discusses the key ideas behind her concept of The Shock Doctrine and its importance as an alternate economic, social and political history of the last thirty years. She describes how the free market ideas of economist Milton Friedman and the Chicago School fostered the impact of shock from the 1970s Pinochet regime in Chile to the Bush administration today.

While the collapse of this country’s financial system continues to send shock waves around the world, we speak to the bestselling author of The Shock Doctrine. Naomi Klein says the public should be wary of the Bush administration trying to use the crisis to push through more of the radical pro-corporate policies that helped cause it in the first place.

    Or on YouTube:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sps6C9u7ras"]YouTube - Koyaanisqatsi[/ame]

    Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance

    Director: Godfrey Reggio
    Musical Composer: Philip Glass

KOYAANISQATSI, Reggio's debut as a film director and producer, is the first film of the QATSI trilogy. The title is a Hopi Indian word meaning "life out of balance." Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds -- urban life and technology versus the environment. The musical score was composed by Philip Glass.

KOYAANISQATSI attempts to reveal the beauty of the beast! We usually perceive our world, our way of living, as beautiful because there is nothing else to perceive. If one lives in this world, the globalized world of high technology, all one can see is one layer of commodity piled upon another. In our world the "original" is the proliferation of the standardized. Copies are copies of copies. There seems to be no ability to see beyond, to see that we have encased ourselves in an artificial environment that has remarkably replaced the original, nature itself. We do not live with nature any longer; we live above it, off of it as it were. Nature has become the resource to keep this artificial or new nature alive.

That being said, my intention in-other-words, let me describe the bigger picture.

KOYAANISQATSI is not so much about something, nor does it have a specific meaning or value. KOYAANISQATSI is, after all, an animated object, an object in moving time, the meaning of which is up to the viewer. Art has no intrinsic meaning. This is its power, its mystery, and hence, its attraction. Art is free. It stimulates the viewer to insert their own meaning, their own value. So while I might have this or that intention in creating this film, I realize fully that any meaning or value KOYAANISQATSI might have comes exclusively from the beholder. The film's role is to provoke, to raise questions that only the audience can answer. This is the highest value of any work of art, not predetermined meaning, but meaning gleaned from the experience of the encounter. The encounter is my interest, not the meaning. If meaning is the point, then propaganda and advertising is the form. So in the sense of art, the meaning of KOYAANISQATSI is whatever you wish to make of it.

The Power of Nightmares, subtitled The Rise of the Politics of Fear, is a BBC documentary film series, written and produced by Adam Curtis. Its three one-hour parts consist mostly of a montage of archive footage with Curtis's narration. The series was first broadcast in the United Kingdom in late 2004 and has subsequently been broadcast in multiple countries and shown in several film festivals, including the 2005 Cannes Film Festival.

The films compare the rise of the Neo-Conservative movement in the United States and the radical Islamist movement, making comparisons on their origins and claiming similarities between the two. More controversially, it argues that the threat of radical Islamism as a massive, sinister organised force of destruction, specifically in the form of al-Qaeda, is a myth perpetrated by politicians in many countries—and particularly American Neo-Conservatives—in an attempt to unite and inspire their people following the failure of earlier, more utopian ideologies.

I'm being HONEST. I'm not going to kiss your ass cause you're a girl like some of the fucking asswipes on this site do. That doesn't mean I'm not a nice guy, I'm just being honest. :)

Its a bad idea for a number of reasons. reason number one is you are already on the greatest depository of information in the world, known as the Internet.

What JFL is proposing is an unregulated, unspecified information dump on a topic specific message board. Square peg, meet round hole...

This is like trying to put on two pairs of shoes. Unnecessary, unfruitful and doomed to fail. This is a message board. Threads are specific. If one wanted to create a specific thread inviting media on that particular subject, that would helpful. A unspecified film, video and documentary dump thread that is open to any subject would result in a pile of unrelated shit.

I imagine JFL was smoking some good dope when she came up with this idea. :jj:

If you were being honest my gender would not have even been an issue. If you want to call me names go ahead if it makes you feel better. Although why that even came up, I have no idea

What I don't understand is why you give a shit what kind of thread Jelly starts. It is not a requirement that you post in it or even read it. It's a thread for documentaries, clips etc. that people that enjoy this forum might like. It isn't unspecified except in your mind maybe.

I mean I could talk to Jelly (since we are both girls and stuff) and see if she wants to appoint someone to "regulate" it. Maybe Pwd is available. Or Kissmyassmult maybe.....I bet he would be good at "regulating".
