Based on the best-selling book of the same name by Fortune reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, a multidimensional study of one of the biggest business scandals in American history. The chronicle takes a look at one of the greatest corporate disasters in history, in which top executives from the 7th largest company in this country walked away with over one billion dollars, leaving investors and employees with nothing. The film features insider accounts and rare corporate audio and video tapes that reveal colossal personal excesses of the Enron hierarchy and the utter moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy. The human drama that unfolds within Enron's walls resembles a Greek tragedy and produces a domino effect that could shape the face of our economy and ethical code for years to come.

1993 Academy Award, Best Documentary Feature. Read the Acceptance Speech by Barbara Trent.

A riveting Academy Award-winning critique of the government's history of militarization, made all the more timely by the current war on terrorism.

The Panama Deception documents the untold story of the December 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama; the events which led to it; the excessive force used; the enormity of the death and destruction; and the devastating aftermath. The Panama Deception uncovers the real reasons for this internationally condemned attack, presenting a view of the invasion which widely differs from that portrayed by the U.S. media and exposes how the U.S. government and the mainstream media suppressed information about this foreign policy disaster.

The Panama Deception includes never before seen footage of the invasion and its aftermath, as well asinterviews with both invasion proponents like Gen. Maxwell Thurman, Panamanian President Endara andPentagon spokesperson Pete Williams, and opponents like U.S. Representative Charles Rangel (D-NY.), Panamanian human rights workers Olga Mejia and Isabel Corro and former Panamanian diplomat Humberto Brown. Network news clips and media critics contribute to a staggering analysis of media control and selfcensorship relevant to any news coverage today, particularly during times of war.

Probably, Anogram. Although it appears the media is framing this as one guy taking all of these people's money, vs. Enron becoming a symbol of corporate greed as a company.

They are both symptoms of the same disease, IMHO.

Stone and his film crew visited Castro in Cuba for three days in 2002, and the film was released in 2003, having its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival early that year. • "To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness... And if we do act, in however small a way, we don't have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory." - Howard Zinn
HOWARD ZINN - YOU CAN'T BE NEUTRAL ON A MOVING TRAIN documents the life and times of the historian, activist and author of the best selling classic A People's History of the United States. Featuring rare archival materials, interviews with Howard Zinn as well as colleagues and friends including Noam Chomsky, Marian Wright Edelman, Daniel Ellsberg, Tom Hayden and Alice Walker, YOU CAN'T BE NEUTRAL captures the essence of this activist and thinker who has been a catalyst for progressive change for more than 60 years. As Noam Chomsky has said of him, "it is no exaggeration to say he has changed the consciousness of a generation."

YOU CAN'T BE NEUTRAL follows the trajectory of Zinn's life from his early childhood in the slums of New York City. In the 1930s Zinn worked in the shipyards and organized workers. In the 40s he met his wife, enlisted in the Air Force to fight facsim, and during WWII, dropped bombs on European towns and cities. He was on one of the first flights that dropped the newly invented weapon napalm (onto a town that was about to surrender late in the war) - an experience that was to inform and shape his pacifist outlook thereafter.

Moving to Atlanta after the war with his young family to teach at Spelman College, Zinn took a leading role in the early Civil Rights Movement, resisting the Southern power establishment and then the FBI. In the 60s, while teaching at Boston University, Zinn led students in protesting the Vietnam War, and flew to Vietnam on a peace mission where he negotiated the return of American servicemen from the North Vietnamese. Although he had discovered that the Vietnamese leaders were looking for a dialogue with American leaders, his entreaties to the U.S. administration to peacefully engage them were ignored.

Howard Zinn is one of this country’s most celebrated historians. His classic work A People’s History of the United States changed the way we look at history in America. First published a quarter of a century ago, the book has sold over a million copies and is a phenomenon in the world of publishing—selling more copies each successive year. After serving as a bombardier in World War II, Howard Zinn went on to become a lifelong dissident and peace activist. He was active in the civil rights movement and many of the struggles for social justice over the past forty years. He taught at Spelman College, the historically black college for women, and was fired for insubordination for standing up for the students. He was recently invited back to give the commencement address. Howard Zinn has written numerous books and is professor emeritus at Boston University. He recently spoke at Binghamton University a few days after the 2008 presidential election. His speech was called “War and Social Justice.â€

Two Interviews with Harvey Kaye, author of "Thomas Paine and the Promise of America"

From The Massachusetts School of Law's "Books of Our Time"
Interviewed by Dean Lawrence R. Velvel

    Excerpt from Interview:

Dean Velvel: I have heard it said that Conservatives are people who worship dead liberals. Do you agree with that?

Harvey Kaye: In the case of Thomas Paine that definitely seems to be true, if you imagine that for this last generation, ever since Reagan, conservatives for the first time in history have been quoting Thomas Paine, a very narrow conception of Thomas Paine. But they promote themselves as the heirs of Paine. They also try to lay claim to the other founding fathers in a monopolistic way.

Ronald Reagan is in many ways a fascinating figure in that, in that when he ran for president in '76 and 1980 when he actually got the nomination and won the presidency, he had shown that he never gave up his affection for FDR, for Franklin Roosevelt...

Conservatives want to believe that they're the voice of America, but if you think about it, what America has become has been a consequence of these struggles of liberals and progressives for two hundred years. So it's all but well and good for conservatives to try and worship that, but that ought to realize they're worshipping indeed, dead liberals."

The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer

    J. Robert Oppenheimer was brilliant, arrogant, proud, charismatic — and a national hero. Under his leadership during World War II, the United States succeeded in becoming the first nation to harness the power of nuclear energy to create the ultimate weapon of mass destruction — the atomic bomb. But after the bomb brought the war to an end, in spite of his renown and his enormous achievement, America turned on him, humiliated him, and cast him aside. The question this film asks is, “Why?â€

“The country asked him to do something and he did it brilliantly, and they repaid him for the tremendous job he did by breaking him.†- Marvin L. Goldberger, Los Alamos scientist and former director, The Institute for Advanced Studies

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE presents The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer, featuring Academy Award-nominated actor David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck, The Bourne Ultimatum) as Robert Oppenheimer. From multiple Emmy Award-winning producer David Grubin (RFK, LBJ, Abraham and Mary Lincoln: A House Divided), The Trials of J. Robert Oppenheimer features interviews with the scientist’s former colleagues and eminent scholars to present a complex and revealing portrait of one of the most important and controversial scientists of the twentieth century. The two-hour film traces the course of Oppenheimer’s life: his rarefied childhood, his troubled adolescence, his emergence as one of America’s leading nuclear physicists, his leadership of the Los Alamos laboratory, and his tragic humiliation. Lincoln vs. the Body Snatchers (NY Times Review)

History Channel, Monday (Feb 16) at 9 p.m., Eastern and Pacific times; 8 p.m., Central time.

Why is history a magnificent thing? Because if you dig deep enough into it, you’ll find an inexhaustible store of real-life oddities that trump anything fiction writers can devise.

The Presidents’ Day proof is “Stealing Lincoln’s Body,†a tale of an audacious but bungled crime so ghoulish that the program might just as easily have been broadcast on Halloween. You’ve got to love a documentary whose talking heads include the director of the Museum of Funeral Customs.

This History show recounts a preposterous plot by Chicago counterfeiters in 1876 to spring one of their mates from prison. They decided to steal Lincoln’s body from its tomb in Springfield, Ill., and hold it for a ransom that would include releasing their friend.

The program, though, does more than detail the crime. It spends considerable time setting the scene. Lincoln’s assassination is described in colorful detail by scholars like Harold Holzer, who relates gruesome tidbits with an impish touch. (“They actually take his brain out and weigh it,†he says, citing an attempt to see if brain size can be equated with brilliance.)

The national tour given to the body is explored, as is the emergence of the art of embalming at the time. Embalmers, the show notes, would go to Civil War battles and offer their services, which could be paid for in advance.

As a stylish re-enactment rolls, Thomas J. Craughwell, whose 2007 book gives the program its title, provides most of the fascinating blow-by-blow account of the night the body snatch was attempted. But there’s more: What happens to the body in the years after that night is also pretty bizarre.

The program is dotted with digital re-creations of the live Lincoln based on photographs of him, a startlingly real-looking approximation of how the great man appeared. And in another nice touch, after its exploration of an exceedingly macabre piece of presidential history, the show concludes with a respectful segment on why Lincoln still looms so large. “His words, his writings, are American Scripture,†Mr. Craughwell says. “They’re as close as we can get to an American Gospel.â€

Right America: Feeling Wronged - Some Voices from the Campaign Trail

On the day Barack Obama was elected the 44th President, more than 58 million voters cast their ballots for John McCain. In the months leading up to this historic election, filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi (HBO's Emmy®-winning "Journeys with George") took a road trip to meet some of the conservative Americans who waited in line for hours to support the GOP ticket, and saw their hopes and dreams evaporate in the wake of that Democratic victory. These voters share their feelings about the changing America in which they live. Premieres Monday, February 16 at 8pm (ET/PT) on HBO2.

    Synopsis:

"In 2008, I followed the McCain campaign across the country to listen to Americans who did not want Barack Obama to be their President. While not representative of the entire Republican Party, these are just some of the party faithful who turned out at campaign rallies along the way." - Alexandra Pelosi

For her fifth HBO project, Pelosi visited 28 states and spoke about the fight for the soul of the country with mostly conservative Americans, who feel underrepresented by the mainstream media. From the Pulpit Freedom Day in Bethlehem, Ga. to the NASCAR circuit, RIGHT AMERICA: FEELING WRONGED - SOME VOICES FROM THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL shows a country at war with itself over the religious and cultural identities that define America. Many interviewees were particularly incensed by what they saw as a lack of any meaningful media attention given to their message during the election campaign - including their views on such hotly contested issues as gun control, abortion rights, religion and gay rights - and by a perceived media bias against McCain and running mate Sarah Palin.

"The way the press handles the election, we feel like our side's never being really represented, never really given a fair shake," says one man. "It's almost like they think of us as a bunch of hicks, a bunch of idiots. And they don't even wanna hear our side or understand us."

"The liberal media is selling the American people short," observes one woman. "That's ridiculous and people should be outraged. And millions and millions of us are." "We're the backbone of this country," says another man. "We're hardworkin,' blue- collared workers that keep this country runnin.' He [Obama] talks like he knows us; he doesn't know us."

RIGHT AMERICA: FEELING WRONGED - SOME VOICES FROM THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL is a snapshot of some of the most enthusiastic conservative Americans, once labeled "the silent majority" of the voting American public. Many of them feel so alienated over cultural and political issues that they say they will never trust the new president, the Congress or the media.
