Lets say we pull all of our troops from the Korean peninsula.. It wouldn't be long until the North overran the south (with aid from China, of course). We trade in the billions with S Korea..imports and exports. Thousands of people would lose their jobs. Available choice in products would be limited and freedom around the globe will have lessened greatly.

Medicare is a stand alone program... it either gets reformed soon, or it will drag the US into Greece status. It is unavoidable and hoping for some all encompassing 'real real health care reform' just doesn't cut it. There are plans on the table now to reform medicare that would save the program and seriously aid the long term finances of this country. You really should educate yourself on them. Hope and Change won't cut it for too much longer. Sooner or later the adults will have to make real decisions, or they will be made for us.

We can talk Medicare in Another thread.

Your Korea example sucks. Let's move it to Japan where we have 135 military facilities. Say we cut that in 1/2 . We still have considerable presence in the region. As for the local Japanese economies . Too fucking bad. It's not our military's job to prop up thier cities

Especially when we are closing domestic bases.

The Korean example is a perfect example. Please define these 'military facilities'... ? Are they mostly bases ? A few bases and mostly somewhere that there might be a few US military personel ? Are some of them hospitals ? And its not about propping up the Japanese economy...the point is that our presence and influence across the globe is one factor that props up OUR economy.

Finally, the point with Medicare is that it is a serious threat that should be talked about...but people spend time talking about overseas bases like it is going to make a difference financially, when clearly it won't. It's a diversion used to keep focus away from what really needs to be done.

The military budget is greater than the Medicare budget.

How can you pass over potential savings because u think the amounts aren't great enough .

The cuts may be trivial when you talk about the size of the debt and deficit but if you have lots and lots of little trivial cuts eventually they add up to significant cuts/savings.

The long term medicare obligations are out of this world..same with SS.. Will make the defense budget look like a drop in the bucket.

Because those 'savings' (if they exist at all... ) are miniscule compared to the total problem. Its like giving a guy with stage 4 cancer a band-aid. It's not going to help him at all.
  9. NCMike06 Full Member

Not when the long term obligations of the country are in the 10's of TRILLIONS.... Either Medicare/SS are dealt with, or its over Johnny...

Don't even start talking about SSI/ disability. And I heard on the radio that they want to expand dental coverage.

I really think we are past the tipping point already. Either Medicare, SS, Military, and just about every other thing including a big tax increase on everyone, or it's over Johnny. Look at the numbers. Small cuts to SSI ain't gonna do it...

but but ...the Buffett Rule will raise 46 billion over the next 10 years ....add that to this silliness and you have the head in the sand philosophy Obama is scamming the minions with? He's moved from that inconsequential issue to this military/defense silliness. 2/3 of our budget is non negotiable (Medicare/aid and SS). That has to change, Obama won't even discuss it, what a disservice he's doing to the American people.

until we figure out it goes beyond who the current idiot in the white House is nothing will change. Bribery and corruption is built into the system now. Congressman must raise $15,000 per day and spend almost all of their time fundraising for the next election. Some lobbyists will admit that congess actually contacts them to solicit money. Not what most people think.
It is at the point where we must come together and hold large protests similiar to OWS, except for the partisanship. It should be Free America Now, and we should hold daily no confidence rallys all over the country.
I have zero confidence in either party. If people think Romney will be worth a shit, they are mistaken.

Medical Tort reform is a joke that causes more harm than good.

You know Plan Parenthoods fed $$ is a drop in the bucket. Doesnt stop the neocons from constantly targeting thier budget.

How would tort reform do more harm than good again? Maybe cutting lawyers out of the healthcare equation and eliminating the upcharge we all pay for services to cover insurance? Yeah, that sounds horrifying.
