CHICAGO (CBS) — Using the lure of $100 gift cards, the Chicago Police Department is encouraging people to get guns out of their homes and turn them in this Saturday, during the annual gun turn-in program.
As WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports, the Police Department is partnering with 20 churches..
LISTEN: WBBM Newsradio’s Mike Krauser reports
First Deputy Supt. Alfonza Wysinger says anyone who turns in a real gun will get a $100 gift card. Replicas and BB guns are worth $10.
“No questions asked,” Wysinger said. “Just show up at the church, and hand over the weapons to the CPD officer that will be there, and get your $100 gift card. So we strongly suggest that people come out that have weapons lying around the house, or weapons, maybe, that they don’t necessarily want in their house. This is a chance to get some money for their weapon, and get another dangerous weapon on the street.”
The gun turn-in event, dubbed “Don’t Kill a Dream, Save a Life,” is on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Some cities do this all the time and it usually has a pretty good turnout. I think they just did one here in CT, by the end of it there was a whole arsenal of guns brought in. How exactly is this stupid?

Seems like a waste of money to me. Who is turning in a gun for $100? Are these mostly hardcore gang members giving up the lifestyle? Take that gift card and turn their life around?

Have some of these guns that been turned in been used in a crime? Are the guns resold or melted down?

I'm not close minded, convince me why this is good.

Believe it or not there are people who own firearms and don't want them, but they don't know the proper way to get rid of them. Most people aren't going to walk into a police station with a gun and say I want to get rid of this. They check the serial numbers on it to make sure they were never used in a crime, but most of the time the people who bring them in are families who don't want to run the risk of their children finding it, things of that nature. Is it really a bad thing if a gang member wants to turn in his piece and turn his life around? Granted that usually isn't the case, but I think that's what these police departments are hoping for. I had an uncle that passed away years back and he had a gun in his house, so when we cleared it out we brought the gun back to our place, but unsure of what to do with it, can't keep a gun that isn't registered to you. My father was going to bring it to his shop and melt it down but it's a pain in the ass, along comes the turn in event and problem solved. You dispose of it safely and you get something back for it. I don't see the problem here.

Cant keep a gun that isn't registered to you? I guess being in Arizona I dont understand that concept. I think the only gun the govt knows I have is a.22 rifle I bought from WalMart years ago. If i needed to get rid of a gun I would go to local gun show on just about any weekend, and sell it to someone as a private sale.

Obviously its not a bad thing if a gang member is doing it to change his/her life around, I just dont see that happening very much. Purely a guess on my part though

Well, that's the point isn't it? The reason it isn't stupid as the OP suggests?

It's a choice with no real down side that I can see......

How many of these guns were used in crimes ? Destroying evidence, no questions asked. How many will be stolen to get a gift card? Stolen guns is a huge market, now the crooks can clean up. Not to mention, isn't illegal to carry a gun outside the home in Chicago? Fucking dumb all the way around.

Carrying a gun outside the home? Are you for real or just really reaching? This is like a six hour event......and as has already been said happens all the time all across the country. Do you have the links to all the horrible things that have happened as a result of these events? Was there a rampage of burglaries the night before as the criminals went on a random rampage looking for guns in houses?

What is your REAL problem with this.......or are you just mad at the world today?

So the best you can do is this MIGHT cause a domestic abuse incident? Abuser's don't need a reason, the abuser might be just as likely to beat her because they were broke and she knew about the event and didn't turn in the gun or maybe she just looked at him wrong.

Last time they did it around me 99% of what they got were long guns ( hint : not the stuff used in crimes ) and some of those riffles belonged in a museum, they destroyed some antique historic shit ....really took a bite out of crime ....:jj:

Just some of the more than 5,500 firearms turned in to the Chicago Police Saturday, June 23, 2012, as part of a drive to get guns off the streets. The weapons were exchanged for gift cards ranging in value from $10 to $100. (WBBM)
(CBS News) CHICAGO - Chicago police collected firearms numbering more than 5,500 and counting on Saturday, from a gun turn-in program designed to take dangerous weapons off the street.
Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said the tally could go considerably higher, reports CBS Station WBBM.
Pallets were still being unloaded at a Homan Square facility where the weapons were being sorted.
"I'm quite certain that if you look at some of these heavy weapons, we certainly are making a difference here, just by getting these guns off the street," McCarthy said at a news conference to show off some of the weapons.
The firearms ranged from an M-60 machine gun and sawed-off shotguns to pen-like "zip" guns that can fire a lethal round.
Of the more than 5,500 weapons, about 700 turned out to be BB-guns or replicas, McCarthy said.
During the gun turn-in Saturday, dubbed "Don't Kill a Dream, Save a Life," Chicagoans could turn in firearms, no questions asked, at churches to get $100 gift cards for each firearm.
BB-guns and replicas were worth $10 cards.
Some locations ran out of gift cards, and had to give people IOUs.
This year's gun turn-in appeared to be one of the more successful. By comparison, the tally in 2010 was 3,900 weapons, including 600 BB-guns or replicas.
Critics say the firearms police collect through the turn-in event by and large aren't the most dangerous kinds, and may even be decades old and non-functioning.
But McCarthy says any gun is welcome.
All weapons collected Saturday will be destroyed.
The collection comes as Chicago is drawing attention for gun-related violence. More than a dozen people were wounded this weekend, and a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot Friday night.

All side effects of a really dumb idea.... Do you really think the only thing holding back a criminal/gangbanger/etc from walking away from crime is because he doesn't know where to get rid of his gun? And with the money he gets from the gift card he can start over fresh?

Are you trying to say there is a link between the weekends gun violence and the event.

If so what are the stats for the previous, say, 5 weeks, or something that links the two events.
  20. cunning lingo Full Member

event - no event - the whole idea behind it is stupid. It will not change violent behavior, and will give criminals a place to dump stolen weapons or firearms used in crimes.
