so my Dave Mustaine post turned more into a discussion about metal... and more like an episode for that Metal show.... SO I figure what the hell make a thread about metal.

OK so Howard I know loves or loved hair bands, I was a fan of Enuff Z NUff (i digress I loved death metal and hair band stuff)

So I ask you guys this.... who is your favorite band, song, album, and why?

Judas Priest has always been one of my favorites. Nothing better than old ass Priest, the shit was just light years ahead of its time

sabbath's self titled album which is arguably the first metal album.

i can only imagine people's reactions in 1970 when they heard sabbath for the first time, not knowing what to expect going in. totally new genre and type of music (yes there was led zep and in a gadda da vida and helter skelter, but NOTHING like this).

then the very first song starting off the album. the ominous riff, the thunderstorm and bells. the lyrics about the devil - the blood curdling screaming!!!!

holy shit. it must have blown everyone's mind, especially considering people were listening to the jackson 5 and simon and garfunkel and shit at the time.

also i'd like to add the first thrash metal albums also rank up in my top albums list. yes i know there were a lot of european bands doing it first but albums like master of puppets blow my mind b/c it was the first more "mainstream" hearing of it.

i dont think sabbath even knew what they had, remember they started as a blues band called "earth" they recorded it so fuckign fast (3 days for about 300 bucks) they needed a name for the band that better described the sounds they were making.... so they took the song title...

My introduction into metal was Anthrax's Among the Living. Caught in a Mosh is probably still my most favorite song of their's even though their catalogue is pretty damn good, regardless of front man.
I have a few favorite albums, reasons included:

Metallica - Master of Puppets: I actually heard Leper Messiah on the radio sometime in the late summer of 86 and I was like...Holy shit, they're playing that on the radio? I got that album (tape actually) and the rest of their catalogue after that. And even though they have put out numerous albums since then and I've bought them, I think their best stuff ended with the Garage Days EP.

Slayer - Reign in Blood. Is it the 'commercial' choice? Possibly, but after hearing them cover Innagoddadavida on the Less Than Zero soundtrack, I picked this album up on a recommendation from a friend. I've heard their other albums but this one is the only one I picked up because I liked it more than the others.

Anthrax - Worship Music. For a 'comeback' album (and for Air Florida's love of VH and starting a thread on that), this tops it. When Joey was fired, I was bummed, I was hesitant with John Bush as a front man (but he put out great albums with them WCFYA being the best in that lineup) but with Joey back, it just fit together with them. The music was great, the lyrics are great and I could listen to this album over and over again, which I have.

Judas Priest: Metal Works. Yes, it's a compilation album but it's got a bunch of great music on it, the best being Victims of Change live. Two discs and not one bad song selected on it over the course of everything (except the Ripper Von time and the current releases).

I have other songs here and there but those are the ones that stick out the most for me and are my go to albums to listen to.

And Richard has really got to get out and promote Charred Walls more. I picked up their 2nd release and it's pretty damn good.

man no kidding, being 42 it came out the year i was born, I mean, I grew up with my uncles listening to this stuff, technically they called Black Sabbath "acid rock" it was really anti hippie music... but can you imagine being like 14-18 going to your record store and amidst the beatles and stones and other stuff around at the time and pickign up that album of the first zep.... I mean Ill never forget pickign up number of the beast and how it effected my life back in 82....

loved scorps up to savage amusement, I forgive them for the shit they put out after it but man the Uli John years.... SMOKIN... they really went thru major sound changes
  11. BlackSabbatical Full Member

like to expand the thread to ANYTHIGN metal, including your first and your favorite concerts....

My first concert was foreigner 4

second was Iron Maiden oppening for Scorps

best was probably Alice in Chains or one of the 14 times i've seen ACDC... oh yea and the first time I saw KISS with make up on...

I was never a big early priest fan until I got unleashed in the east, the recording is SO crisp and so much better than the studio albums, since I have become a huge fan of early priest
  13. chadp1234 Full Member

yep they definitely let their bluesy roots show through in a lot of their work even on their first album. song 2 is the wizard w/ the harmonica and all that. song 3 has a bluesy hook right off the bat.

however, the first song "black sabbath" to this day still creeps me out (in a good way). when ozzy first screams "ohhh nooooooo" and then the crack of the guitar riff right after it, it's just amazing. none of the "newer metal" has that effect on me, that's for sure.

Can i add that i listen to never say die today . Black sabbath sang songs about the evil man dose to each other and the world , and what the reprocusions that come with it . Alot of there lyrics still hold true today as the world never really changes for the better . Soon we will all feel the electric funeral , geezer set us strait alone time ago. In my opinion there a alltime rock band .

The first four Metallica albums will always be near and dear to my heart. I'm not anti new tallica, but nothing will beat those IMO.

As a recommendation if you don't know too much newer Slayer, check out God Hates Us All. Incredibly underrated album. Paul Bostaph on drums, I've never heard anything like this guy on this album. This album was released on 9/11 and I remember picking this up after school on that day. This album was pure beautiful anger. Very ironic title and lyric content considering it's release date.

Great thread title by the way.

First concert was Metallica in '89 with Queensryche. I didn't get to attend or take the time to go to concerts before I graduated high school. I worked most of the time and my parents weren't into this music and no other friend's parents would take us to drop us off before I had a car and started working all the time.

I never saw original lineups of most bands at the time as well which sucked.

If I could only have one album on a deserted island I think it would be the first sabbath album... or Abbey Road, but I digress this is a metal thread... the fucking second half of Iron Man when it gets all heavy.... that does it for me, but again a song that paints a picture and takes you somewhere definitely Black Sabbath does this... Vol. IV hand of Doom is another that jumps out at me like the song Black Sabbath

oooo good one, song still sends shivers up my spine and makes me love that im a metal head, that song is for me is one of my top ten greatest wirtten songs ever, if im in a shitty mood, I can put on for those about to rock and i instantly know who and what I am and why I love the music I love

My first concert was KISS in 1983, right before they took the makeup off, Ace just left the band and I was crushed. Hated them ever since! Anyway, my vote goes to the 1st Sabbath album, and Slayer's Reign In Blood. But so many great albums. If you can get past Trouble's vocals, their 1st, Psalm 9, is heavy as hell, Sabbathy guitar sound, started the whole slow, sludgy metal movement, can't remember what they call it.
